I had the hardest time with AHPRA. They would tell me I needed to send something else in, I'd send it then they'd ask for more stuff. Rinse, repeat. Over and over. Don't be surprised if you have to send more in after this. As far as a way around it, I don't think so if you want to practice in Australia. I'm from Cali and here's the link to the BRN to get your license endorsed to them: https://www.rn.ca.gov/licensees/verifications.shtml I'd suggest reaching out to the HR department at your first job and they should be able to do it. If you worked for a travel nurse agency it should also be possible. Also be careful as to the timing of your application. I had to request another endorsement from California (and pay another $100) because they were deciding my application and it had taken more than 3 months and they said the endorsement was only good for 3 months. The same thing happened with my police background check. What kind of visa are you after? If you're wanting a skilled permanent resident you'll have to go through ANMAC and have them evaluate your nursing credentials which is a whole other can of worms. I'd recommend doing that first. I ran into the problem of having my nursing registration approved but not having a permanent resident visa. You can't work without one. Let me know if you have more questions!

Are there ratios? I'm from Cali and in the ED it was 4:1. Cerner wasn't my favorite but I'd take it over a paper chart any day! I'm ok with the pay here but will definitely be taking a huge cut from Northern California. I'm definitely ok with the tea breaks! We only got one break at my last hospital. Any particular company that you like for malpractice insurance? About how much does Medicaid cost you and does it come straight out of your pay? Did you have to get the Oz equivalent BLS/ACLS/PALS before you got hired or is that something they provide you? Sorry to pepper you with questions but you're so responsive on this thread and are actually practicing here! Thanks!

I've gotten my registration through AHPRA as an RN without being required to do a bridging program. If anyone has questions, PM me! I'm in Oz now on and have lodged my 189 Skilled Independent visa, awaiting a result. I'd really love to work at Sunshine Coast University Hospital, ideally in the Peds ED, general ED would be fine too. How else is nursing different aside from the paper charting (ugh), no RTs, 8hr shifts? I'm glad people have kept this thread up!

Hi All, I know this has been a topic of multiple threads before but it seems they've died off so I wanted to start a new one for those who are currently undertaking this process. What have your difficulties been? How did you solve them? What type of visa are you applying for? How did your AHPRA process go? Thanks!

Can anyone comment as to the differences in the ED from the US to Australia? I work in the ED of a Level I trauma center in California, mostly in the pediatric section. We have RTs, pharmacists and a Pyxis, techs to assist (CPR, EKGs, vitals, transporting pt's, stocking, etc. All of which we can do ourselves obviously) when available. We have a 4:1 assignment unless a pt is declared ICU status and then we're 2:1 until our ICU goes upstairs. A little background: I've got almost 5 years of ED experience and a BSN. I'm hoping to work for Queensland Health and live near Gold Coast. Thanks for your time!

mday001: I never heard anything. I looked at my application status and it changed to the one saying that I was not selected. Such a bummer. UCI&USFMom: I definitely accepted the offer! I just got the formal offer letter and the background check is done. I start on July 25! Super excited, ED is where I really wanted to be. Dream job is a peds ED but I have to start somewhere! UCI&UCSFMom: I haven't heard anything from Rady yet. I called last Friday and the manager said we'd hear from HR either way by the end of this week, hopefully. I did however get an offer at Sharp Grossmont today! I'm looking in San Diego so stuff in the LA area are too far for me. Thanks for the heads up though! That's awesome about the offer at CHOC, I heard it's a great place. One of my preceptors in Sacramento said it was even better than Rady.

Sharp Grossmont's ED just started making calls. I got the job! I was too floored to ask how many positions they were offering! I think she said they interviewed about 25 people total. MGM619- The hardest question I was asked was, "Out of the 200 very qualified applications we reviewed, what is the one thing you want me to remember about you?" I wasn't prepared and had to take a moment to collect my thoughts. They also asked about challenges/obstacles I've faced and how I handled them. Definitely lots of behavioral questions to see how you think. It was a bit daunting to be sitting at the end of a large table opposite five interviewers. Just be as confident and calm as you can. Someone else asked what our backgrounds were, so: I have my BSN from Sacramento State, I was in the Navy for 5 years as a Hospital Corpsman, I graduated in December 2010 and have ACLS, PALS and an EKG course. I had a 3.9 GPA, which I only mention because the recruiter requested my final transcript before calling to schedule an interview. I'd definitely say that if you can afford it, get the ACLS and if interested in peds PALS/NRP. Good luck everyone. UCSD's new grad postings are still up, I think there are five or six units hiring this time around. I had a lot of rejections before I got this break so keep your heads up! "Just keep swimming!"

I had my second interview on the 17th and haven't heard anything since. My application status hasn't changed either so I still have a wee bit of hope left.

@pinkcupcakeRN: I just checked and mine have not changed. As far as I know, I'm still in the running for the surgical unit. I had a peer interview last Thursday, though I haven't heard anything since. The status for that job still says, "Your application has been reviewed and is currently being considered to determine if you are one of the most qualified applicants." The one for the ED app says, "Thank you for your interest in Rady Children's. At this time, we are unable to consider you for this position." The latter is a definite 'no' but I think the first one is still good. Maybe since the first one changed for you, it might be a sign you'll be hearing something for an interview? What did it say before that? I don't want to give false hope as I'm only speculating!

I got an email from the recruiter regarding the Grossmont ED position requesting my final transcript and it said that if I was selected for an interview I would be contacted by Apr. 20. So, it's still too early to give up hope everyone!
