Racism in NYC

It depicts racism and horrors at NYU Langone

“Unmasked Nursing:” Nurses at NYU Langone struggle to maintain safety of patients amid racist and hostile work conditions.

There were some instances of WOW! that’s pretty racist, but it was lost in the majority of what felt like 29 pages of someone complaining about every aspect their job and blaming it on racism.

Not everything that happens to a person is because of race..sometimes it's the persons perception that is the issue. This person was mean to me therefore it's because I am (fill in the blank) when in essence it could be that some patients/people are just rude, demeaning in their behavior..does that mean because they happen to be interacting with another race they are racist? No. They are just a-holes.

Some people get offended about everything, everyday and they look for their "triggers" or assume they are being treated or not treated a certain way because they are a certain sex, race, age, etc. Some articles like this also bring of questions of accuracy on facts, not the emotional response or emotional interpretation of the situation. Sometimes we are treated how we are because of OUR attitude and OUR assumptions about another person based on the attributes we think THEY are judging us on.

The media doesn't help in that it panders to division. Division of who is vaccinated, who isn't, division on race, political views, gender, age, sexual orientation, and on and on.

Racists of ALL colors/ethic backgrounds exist but the major of people seem to want to just live their lives, take care of their families and drive on.

So it’s obvious that the two above aren’t people of color or black. Reading this article it focuses on the aspects of hour marginalized people of color even at the bedside when taking care of patients. You really think a comment around “putting all my black boys on one side,” is an professional and non racist statement? That it just so happened that all the nurses on this unit were trained for ICU and acute patient rations but only the white nurses had the majority of opportunities to practice and feel safe in their practice? These comments above just show that as non people of color you haven’t been met with fear or distrust based on the color of your skin or background and it shows by your statements. Also it is not up to white people to decide WHAT IS AND WHAT ISN’t RACIST. I’m tired of the this old song. When people come to work especially as medical providers it’s to provide care and support to patients. Keep them safe and go home. You cannot keep patients safe if part of your staff is being marginalized in any capacity and then being thrown into unsafe working conditions as a connivence. Equality and equity must be a STANDARD. It’s that simple. Overt favoritism to white counterparts is racist. Biased practices against people of color is racist. Complaints heard and ignored by people of color is racist when they’re same white colleagues concerns are met with immediate action and resolution overtly time and time again. But what is most egregious is that you know that these biases exist and when you’re met with solutions to provide peace and equality nurses make statements such as

In addition one of the nurses made an insensitive and derogatory joke of these changes on the night of November 4th when asked about her transition to the acute side in which she replied in a sarcastic manner:

“well you heard we have to give everyone equal opportunity here” — RN Alex,

and the other nurse RN Diana both started to laugh. This comment doesn’t even deserve a response at all but highlights the innate and deep rooted biases the nurses on the unit engage in.

I guess when reading the article you skipped over key issues laid out. These issues are personal no one should come to work and have people actively try work in such hostile conditions. Calling out bs for what it is isn’t decisiveness. A lot of Individuals who are not people of color think that addressing issue creates more problems but it’s the opposite we must address these issue head on and come up with solutions. To ignore these is a disservice to patients and to those we care for.

Thank you... I grow tired of people telling me what is or isn't racist. But don't let me ask someone to clearly enunciate, so I understand what is being said ~ I'm a bigger racist than David Duke.

This is so exhausting and thank you for reiterating why working in NY sounds like a nightmare. Plus no mandated ratios... Sounds like hades

You have zero idea what race or ethnicity I am. You are assuming I am white. You state it is not up to white to decide what is racists - just as it is not up to other races to decide what is racists or meant to be racists. It's subjective.

And again, I would adivse anyone reading the above article or any other one similar, to confirm the facts, not the emotions, of the situation.

Maybe some of us just refuse to take the race bait - regardless of who throws it out or what color we are.

So let's unpack this before lmfaooo. From what you said you proved my point you're not a person of color who has had to deal with microagressions and prejudices. You keep distracting from the issues because you know that it happens and that it plays a big factor in how people are treated. Al ot of non people of color just like YOU, get mad that people of color call out injustices for what it is because you your self who steal opportunities from others, use your privilege for evil and wicket intentions cannot steal or capitalize or claim discrimination because the deck is already stacked in you favor, and so you whine and complain about "race baiting," as a cop out so that you won't be held accountable in you complicitness or active racist behavior. As a nurse and a person of color I have been and seen discrimination base of the color of my skin. I can tell from you comment you're a racist off rip or you just hate the fact that certain white people are attached with disgusting acts against humanity and so you try to pave the streets of sin with empty statements and analogies to distract from the egregious acts against marginalized groups of people. At the end of the day all people want to do is live their life and as a nurse you want to come to work do you job and go home, its unfortunate that instead of reading this article and thinking about how people are feeling you immediately go and say

You can't say things that are based not on an individual but based on Culture, ethnic background, and the color of your skin its racist. Racism is not "subjective." Subjective most commonly means based on the personal perspective or preferences of a person—the subject who’s observing something. Last time I checked Slavery, Jim Crow, Red Lining, and Segregation is not Subjective. You cannot go into work and tell people they have to work on one side of unit because "All the black boys," are they how is that subjective? Also this Article was made by nurses on the unit, the article has quotations of exact accounts so what hasn't been confirmed? See this is why I don't have to assume you're not a person of color because the Article was about. Racism, Islamophobia, Bullying, and work place. discrimination. Your response is very telling and its sad people had to even talk about race because you're right we shouldn't. But you don't to sit here and tell people that if someone calls them a monkey or a rag head, or chink. You're telling me that those people are just misinterpreting their words and that is subjective, and that they have no biases against them that won't affect how they work, how job mobility is offered to them, and how they develop their practice in medicine? Ma'am what ever delusional smoke your blowing in the air please keep that to yourself because knowingly living in ignorance is disgusting. But I makes sense why you have issues with equality, people only have issues with equality, equity and justice, when they now have to start sharing what was hoarded for themselves and share it with other people. You do want accountability you want all these nurses to shut up and continue to be mistreated. It's disgusting and AGAIN....it's Racist.
