I'm currently a peds home health nurse and met with the parents of a client I might me working with. The parents have had bad experiences with foreign nurses mainly from African countries due to their accents. All through the meeting the parents kept mentioning how much they want a nurse who speaks clear English. The parents have had difficulty with communicating with these nurses that have led bad consequences. I have empathize with the parents but at the same time feel sorry for those nurses whom English is hard to understand.
I have worked with nurses and docs who were foreign with thick accents and know how challenging it can be, I can imagine how frustrated the parents may be.
What are your thoughts ?
Leslie! I do not Agree, lucky is exactly right. She is speaking on behalf of anyone that royalprince
rude post affected. By the way how do u know this doesnt affect lucky's family?
You don't know Lucky.
Most likely because Lucky told us her parents are hard working which is generally the opposite of "entitled". The point to that would be that whether or not there is an "official" language in the US is beside the point. It is the dominant language here which would mean that wherever someone comes from, if they learn to speak English they will be conversant with people who have lived here for decades and people for whom their first language is different.
He was not complaining about the culture or race of anyone. He was saying he doesn't like it when he gets frowned at because he doesn't speak what their language is. So if that makes him a racist, I suppose you think that I must learn Farsi, Tagalog Spanish, Arabic, Russian, Ukrainian, Armenian, Korean and Chinese? I cross paths with people on an almost daily basis who speak all of the above.
If someone doesn't care to learn it, or they think they are too old to learn it -- does not automatically place the burden on the English-speaking person or the tut-tuts, insults and frowns of disapproval we get. Is it really reasonable to you that someone lives here for 20 years and still gets mad and sad and helpless because someone doesn't speak one of the scores of foreign languages we deal with every day?
You said if we agreed with the sentiment of Royal Prince we are ignorant and racist.
Now remembering that Royal Prince was upset about one thing -- people who have lived here for over 10 years and still don't speak English expect him to know their language. To which is hurled by you and Lucky as deserving of these comments: Lets break down what Lucky's post claims:
He is selfish.
He doesn't know what a true American is.
He is a bigot that wasn't able to grasp the fact that there are other cultures and languages in the world.
He has no idea that the population of the United States is based on immigrants from many countries.
As for the patient who complained about the foreign Nurses accent.
Nursing or medical is not a language or idea. Its skills and scientific process
with rationales. If this particular patient knows how to medically help themselves
they do not need to hire a professional at all.
So you think verbal communication with the parents of a child likely vent dependent isn't really important as long as you know how to give their meds or suction them? I find it quite alarming that you find the issue of apparently little overall significance and somehow separated from "skills and scientific process".
Do you know American accents can be terrible too?- just the waymany speaks so fast without proper grammar usage.
Language is not what you speak, its what you can write down.
You agree with that?
Just a side note, go watch A and E (the first 48) learn that Americans commits highest numbers of homicides in the world-This is what can lead to downfall as population decreases with untimely death of good people.
No problem bringing murder up at all? Perfectly reasonable connection to make, huh? The double standard is really unfair.
I didn't call anyone selfish or a bigot.. I said his comment was rude...Like I told someone else, I am not here to make enemies.
Sorry for giving my honest opinion of his post, maybe I took it too personal because of everything i've been through. Just be thankful that you don't experience language problems like other people and that you are a true American.
The truth is that accent or not, clear English or not, some people are honest workers and try their best to care for others.
Now please let's have some peace.

I'm not here to make enemies either. To be honest, I think maybe you took it personally and read some attitudes in his language expression that hit your hot buttons. Please realize that if any person here seems to be saying something offensive that we first ask them to clarify before unloading on them. I understand what it is like to watch people here in America with that "lost" expression. I have even gone up and caused a scene when some pushy people cut off an elderly Japanese couple in the line waiting for a bus out of Las Vegas. So I do understand at least somewhat.
It is true that you didn't call him a bigot. You merely described what most people would call a bigot. You have to realize we are sensitive, too. Sometimes I say things that don't come out right. I worry someone will think I am insulting them. It is a tricky business = we should all take a deep breath before we respond.
So as Chin Up would say, peace!! :) ♥.
Thanks, CrunchRN :)

oh my gosh, yes!
there are many good, decent, and honest workers.
but it all comes back to, that patients need to understand what is being communicated to them- and that is the bottom line.
it has nothing to do with one's decency and valor.

It is truly annoying when someone reads "racist" and all kinds of other ridiculous things into a situation where it doesn't belong. Thanks for taking the time to post what some of us were thinking.
