"She's Just A Nurse"

Nurses General Nursing

Published

hi! i'm a senior in highschool and a future nurse, which i'm thrilled about! but i just had a quick comment and wanted some feedback. one of the secretaries at my school really hurt her back so she saw a chiropractor. after seeing him for several weeks her condition did not get any better, and sometimes felt worse. so my school nurse was talking to her and recommended getting an mri just to be safe, and another nurse who the secretary spoke to told her the same thing. when she talked to her chiropractor about refering her he said that he wouldn't really trust them because their just nurses and don't really know to much! i almost fell out of my chair and i actually did scream wtf! no way! this is so ridiculous. i'm just curious as to why people think that nurses are so insignificant and unimportant, any ideas? i'm gonna be a nurse and help people no matter what others think or say about me, it's who i am, but i just can't understand why people think this. thanks so much for all that you do!

"we dare to care

we dare to cry

we dare to feel

we dare to try

we dare to be at the end of the day

more than we were the day before!"

with a this one person's ill-informed opinion rather than a general disrespect for nursing among medical professionals. There is still a conflict between Chiropractors and other medical personnel, so that might be where that comment came from. The guy is probably sick of hearing that he's "just a Chiropractor and not a real doctor." so he's lashing out.

Not that his behavior was mature or professional. But you'll find that there are some people who never behave like professionals or adults -- even if they look like them on the outside. (I can tell you some stories about attendings throwing undirected tantrums, but you'll find out about those sooner or later! LOL)

Don't let one person's ignorant comments get you down. I am a relatively new grad (an old one...LOL), and have found nothing but support from my friends and family (even a few of the MDs I know told me they'd go to nursing school and get a MSN if they knew then what they know now!)

Good luck!

It's sad to see this attitude in so many people. BUT, I'm so excited someone in high school has their heart set on nursing...and a male at that! Yeah for you! Stay on track and good luck! -Andrea

We NEED you!

To heck with that chiropractor!

My mother is a nurse. When I was in high school I thought there was not way I was going to be "just a nurse". Now I'm 30 years old, going back to school while working, with two kids. I now know the value of nurses and the skill and intelligence it takes to be one. There are a lot of people like me but there are not enough high school students like you. I think you found yourself a mission to teach other young people the value of this profession. Good luck to you.

Sounds to me that those nurses were right on.... And a chiropractor 'dissing a nurse....COME ON!!!

Good luck on your studies... I think you will be an excellent nurse. You already know how to stand up for yourself.

This particular comment probably had more to do with the chiropractor taking it personally that someone would dare suggest that his patient seek treatment beyond what he could offer. Don't let it get you down! You know the worth of nurses & that's what matters.
