December 2005 -- Mattel, the world's leading toy maker, has just released as part of its Furryville Collections (Series 2) a small doll called the "Nurse Quacktitioner."
Selling a doll called "Nurse Quacktitioner" would seem to reflect little regard for nurses or public health. That's because the name suggests that nurse practitioners (NPs) are "quacks," a term that has long been understood to refer to untrained persons who pretend to be physicians and dispense medical treatment.
What do ya'll think?
It's a cute ducky stuffed animal. It's made for kids and I really don't think that they meant any intentional harm to the nursing profession. I don't know, I think it's funny, and was meant to be cute and humorous, not offensive.
As soon as I have seen that the toy is a duck, I did not think that it was ment to offend anyone.
Wow I just feel like I was slapped in the face. Kudos to you Siri, I hope you do hear something, like an apology.Remember the article that doctor wrote in GH about nurses and sucking up to us to get their family members better care? This month there are two letters to the editor regarding his degrading statements. No reply by GH. If I find it, I'll post it.
Thanks for that update Dutchgirl. In addition to the suggestion that families give nurses chocolate or some nonsense like that, there was also a doc who suggested that people lie about their symptoms to the triage nurse in order to get faster care. I thought that was more egregious than the bribery foolishness. Were there any letters pertaining to that?

I honestly don't remember but I'll see if I can find that magazine around here somewhere and post it.
I have to admit I bought a Nurse Quacktitioner from ebay today for $7.99.
My best friend is graduating as a nurse practitioner in May. I'm not sure how she'll react but she has a really good sense of humor so perhaps she'll like it. I think it's only in poor taste to use Nurse and Quack together other than that it's just a duck. I am glad it was pulled from the market. That's the power of nurses! Let's move onto bigger issues!
How about a chicken who looks like foghorn Leghorn in a lab coat who's a Farmacist? If you have a nurse quactitioner she sould haves a ducktor or pheasant assistant to collaborate with. How about a MOOsage therapist? Imagine what those clove hooves would feel like! It is a kid thing. Kinda cute. When I saw the name, I thought how awful..but I feel like it's just a cute toy. Maybe they should come out with a farm animal doc who is a donkey. Would AMA have a fit or what? More damaging was the Today or GMA piece about Np's. This is just silly kid stuff. (IMHO)
I think that toy is adorable.
Years ago, I remember another uproar about an ad put out by the Texas medical association. It was a picture of a duck, dressed like a nurse, and the caption was 'nurse quackitioner'. It was in regards to nurses using 'nursing diagnoses' and using their assessment skills to 'treat' patients. The med society encouraged the use of this ad to all the other states medical societies. The ANA really got mad, and demanded an apology from the medical society for this and an immediate retraction of the ad. The medical society said 'we didn't mean any harm' Yeah, right.
