"Male" nurse? Le sigh.

Published

I try not to be too sensitive about stuff like this, but it is discouraging that even today people sometimes feel they have to preface the word "nurse" with the word "male," when their nurse happens to be a man. It is discouraging to see a supposedly progressive news organization like Yahoo! continuing to "otherize" us males by using such verbiage:

London (AFP) - A Filipino male nurse was jailed for life with a minimum of 35 years on Tuesday for poisoning 21 patients with insulin at a British hospital, two of whom died. Nurse jailed for life for poisoning patients - Yahoo News

It reminds me of when I was telling my friends and family I was going to nursing school. I remember how my pastor told me, "Do you really want to spend your life being a male nurse?" To which I replied, "No, I want to spend my life being a nurse."

Seriously? What if people called someone a "female doctor" or a "female lawyer?" This is silly.

I remember way back in clinicals at the VA a male veteran asked me if I was gay. I said no, I was married to a woman, etc. He asked to see a picture of her. I obliged. He said okay, you can touch me. Afterwards I felt embarrassed for myself. I should not have to defend my profession or throw my gay colleagues under the bus like that.

I know, flame me or say these are "microaggressions." Maybe you are right. But it is not fair either to our male or female colleagues.

If an male olympic gold medal winner can go on to become a hot woman, then why is there such a problem with men as nurses?

I happen to know a number of women (female was not their cis gender) who work as nurses. They have told me that healthcare is very tolerant of transgender people. I have many close friends that fall in the LGBT spectrum, so it is a good reflection that the profession is so accepting.

Mmmmm hmmmmmm......she's as airbrushed as her infamous stepdaughter.

RK,

She is also 65 years old....

You can NOT argue that she is not attractive. Her body is well maintained (by the nature that decathlon was her event) and her face is pretty. Having many trans friends myself, I found that certain features are attractive (symmetry for example) when they present as male or female. As Bruce he was a good looking guy, as Caitlyn she is a pretty woman.

I see the same with my wife who is older than Caitlyn and still wears a size 4. She is also very active as well; we canoe, hike, and do technical ice. We both try to watch what we eat and every year we try to grow our own food.

As in the issue of "male nurse," there are certain things that transcend gender; features of attractiveness like symmetry (again), the benefits of a healthy lifestyle, and living your life being true to yourself....

So close no matter how far

Couldn't be much more from the heart

Forever trusting who we are

And nothing else matters

Never opened myself this way

Life is ours, we live it our way

All these words I don't just say

And nothing else matters

Trust I seek and I find in you

Every day for us something new

Open mind for a different view

And nothing else matters

Never cared for what they say

Never cared for games they play

Never cared for what they do

Never cared for what they know

I'm not saying she's not a good looking trans woman, I'm just saying she's not THAT good looking. No one is, all those magazine covers are BS. Welcome to womanhood, Bruce/Caitlyn. You're already subject to unrealistic standards.

I adore that song. Thanks for posting it.

Ugh, how true is that about the unrealistic standards.

I like the version of that song that was done by a female with a raspy voice. I'll see if I can find it. Her voice is so sexy.

Eta - found it:

My oldest, who is a very gifted guitar player, played that song as one of his audition songs for a fine arts high school here in Denver. :) It has a special place in my heart.

Did he get in???

He did! And then was "not invited to return" the following year, for some behavior shenanigans he got into.

He's still an incredibly gifted guitar player, though.

You mean like the unrealistic expectations put on nurses? LOL

ixchel, I really am liking you.

There is nothing like a female with a raspy voice doing a cover. During college, I worked with a management company in the greater Philadelphia area (I headed the road crew, lighting crew, stage crew, and sound crew), so I have a deep appreciation for musical talent.

I concur that voice is incredibly sexy. I added it to my playlist.

You should enjoy these:

klone, I can tell you from personal experience, the movie This Is Spinal Tap is an accurate portrayal of the music industry (shenanigans and all), so that is not surprising. He may appreciate these:

Q: How many guitar players does it take to change a light bulb?

A: Ten. One to change the light bulb and 9 to stand there and say "Yeah, but I could have done it better..."

Q: How many bass players does it take to change a light bulb?

A: You don't give a bass player something that difficult.

No Leaf Clover is probably my favorite Metallica song. I remember seing a a silk aerialist in Vegas performing to that song. It was mesmerizing.

Love Emmylou Harris, but the Mumford and Sons "Boxer" cover is my favorite.
