I apologize if these questions have been answered. There are a lot of posts to go through to find answers! I am currently a Clinical Lab Technologist that holds a BS in Chemistry from Howard University. I will finish my MS in Forensic Science from Pace University in the Fall. Unfortunately, instead of following my heart and doing Nurising, I did what I thought was best at the time. I am considering applying for the accelerated Nursing program at Downstate and had a few questions:
1. Is it possible to work while completing the program? Of course I have to eat, live and pay bills (I am the only person that provides for myself financially and NYC is not cheap to live in). If working is not possible, does the student loans cover living expenses?
2. Does the program only start during the summer, or do they have a Fall admittance? (I have a few pre-reqs to complete that probably wont be done until Summer 2010--I plan to take them at a CUNY school)
Thanks for your help. I know its crazy for me to make a career change after completing a Master's but better late than never!
DO NOT GET THE TOTE! I didn't buy it and boy am I glad, but I'm sure it is useful if you want to practice on your own...
Books: Most of the books you should get the older edition for much cheaper with practically the same material. The library also has some books as well
Health assessment in nursing - weber kelly
Understanding Pathophysiology
Essentials of Pediatic nursing - wong
medical- surgical in nursing - saunder
clinical drug therapy: rational for nursing practice
Old's maternal-newborn nursing & womens health across the lifespan
these are the main books that you will need. there are a few more books, but I never purchased them so I'm not sure of the titles. hope this helps
Congrats and best of luck!
Regarding the patho book: I don't know who teaches the class now, but whoever taught the class when I was there did not use the textbook at ALL. I happen to think that a good patho book is one of those basic texts you'll want to have on hand throughout your nursing career, but I don't recommend that particular one. I didn't feel it was clear or explained things well. Do a search for other titles for patho books to keep as a reference.

no text? did they test from powerpoint slides? class notes? I kinda like having a "final authority" on testable material
could you guys recommend certain professors?
I don't think you have much choice... there generally is only one section for each course. Everyone takes the same classes. Regarding clinical and independent study instructors, there's a range, but different people connected with different professors so it's hard to say who's best. People also have preferences based on clinical sites and days rather than who the instructor is. If you get assigned to a clinical site that you don't like, you can switch, as long as you find someone willing to switch with you. You can imagine the maneuvering that went on whenever clinical placements were announced...
Hi jeanette73,Thank you for the information and sorry I am new to the site. I didn't know about the policy. could you let me know what type of nurse shoes to buy or if I can wear any all white shoes or sneakers?
Thanks again.
Some instructors were pickier than others. To play it safe, buy any all white shoe, but ALL white -- not even a logo.

Hi lala88,
Thanks for the info. I was wondering if the nursing tote is required and what is inside of it and if I need to buy more than one uniform top. Also could you let us know what books we need to buy for the classes. I know this is a lot but trying to save money any way I can.
Also, wondering if any of the people who have been accepted are looking for apartment in the area for downstate?
