Questions regarding SUNY Downstate Accelerated Nursing Program

Published

I apologize if these questions have been answered. There are a lot of posts to go through to find answers! I am currently a Clinical Lab Technologist that holds a BS in Chemistry from Howard University. I will finish my MS in Forensic Science from Pace University in the Fall. Unfortunately, instead of following my heart and doing Nurising, I did what I thought was best at the time. I am considering applying for the accelerated Nursing program at Downstate and had a few questions:

1. Is it possible to work while completing the program? Of course I have to eat, live and pay bills (I am the only person that provides for myself financially and NYC is not cheap to live in). If working is not possible, does the student loans cover living expenses?

2. Does the program only start during the summer, or do they have a Fall admittance? (I have a few pre-reqs to complete that probably wont be done until Summer 2010--I plan to take them at a CUNY school)

Thanks for your help. I know its crazy for me to make a career change after completing a Master's but better late than never!

not yet. fingers crossed!

I was accepted and am really excited for the year to start!!

Congrats! May I ask when you applied and when you heard you were accepted? Was it via email or letter?

Thanks and Congrats again!

Hey, I should probably start a new thread about this (but not sure how).....I walked my application in on january 13th to Downstate and received an acceptance letter (via postal mail) yesterday (approx 3 weeks later)

I was very excited.......I also have a friend who was just accepted today again via postal mail.

Congrats on the admissions. Do you mind if i ask what were your net scores and gpa. Also did your acceptance come in the small envelope or the larger one

Specializes in ICU.

Congrats I never applied, I had to push back my move to NYC until next year. Goodluck.

Hey Tanguera,

U have a ton of insight about the program at Downstate. I had aspirations of applying there until coming onto this site. I am still really interested in the accelerated program and by now I'm sure u've almost completed yours. How's it going for you? Has it gotten any better? Please respond if you have the time.

Thanks so much

Sorry it's taken such a while to get back to you, things have been busy. Has the program gotten any better? No, the program doesn't get better, but it's really impossible (or just very difficult) to transfer out so I think we've all just accepted where we are and that we will just have to deal with the program until we're finished. It's really hard to transfer b/c not all schools are on the same calendar as you may know, so if you transfer out you may end up taking a lot longer than 15 months to finish up.

Let me know if you have specific questions, otherwise, the complaints I have before still stand and there are definitely a lot more to add to the list. I hate to paint such a negative picture of the program but there are very few positive things we have to say about the program.

I just received a letter from SUNY Downstate and they said I'm missing Microbiology lab. What can I do at this point to get into their accelerated nursing program in Summer '10? course registration deadline was Feb. 5th at my school and if Downstate's program begins in the summer, will I be allowed to make up this microbio. lab in the summer while I start my nursing courses in Downstate? or will my application be withdrawn because I don't meet prereq requirements? =(

You have your acceptance letter? Or they informed you that your application is incomplete because you don't have all the pre-reqs?

It's just a letter requesting me to submit the documents I'm missing. If I don't have this course...are they automatically going to reject my application since I don't meet all their pre-req. requirements? Thank you!

You should email them. I had a problem with one of my transcripts and they were pretty good at getting back to me. At least you'll know where you stand whether they give you good or bad news about your situation.

Yeah...I guess I should...sigh* I wish it won't be a big deal for them, but who knows. I'm so nervous about graduating in May and not knowing if I'll finally be going to nursing school. Thank you!
