Questions regarding SUNY Downstate Accelerated Nursing Program

U.S.A. New York

Published

I apologize if these questions have been answered. There are a lot of posts to go through to find answers! I am currently a Clinical Lab Technologist that holds a BS in Chemistry from Howard University. I will finish my MS in Forensic Science from Pace University in the Fall. Unfortunately, instead of following my heart and doing Nurising, I did what I thought was best at the time. I am considering applying for the accelerated Nursing program at Downstate and had a few questions:

1. Is it possible to work while completing the program? Of course I have to eat, live and pay bills (I am the only person that provides for myself financially and NYC is not cheap to live in). If working is not possible, does the student loans cover living expenses?

2. Does the program only start during the summer, or do they have a Fall admittance? (I have a few pre-reqs to complete that probably wont be done until Summer 2010--I plan to take them at a CUNY school)

Thanks for your help. I know its crazy for me to make a career change after completing a Master's but better late than never!

E-mail them, call them; be assertive. The admissions office isn't always the most helpful or cooperative. Some people had to jump through hoops just to get simple information out of them. Perhaps pay a visit if you are closeby. You cannot start the program without having completed all of the coursework. It will be impossible to take Microbiology during your first semester in the summer. It will be too much work. Downstate throws an insane amount of work at you your first summer in the accelerated BSN program so you won't be able to take other courses.

Good luck.

It seems as though many people have gotten acceptance letters and I have yet to hear anything. They did email me a while ago asking for my grade report from my anthro and chemistry course. Is that a good sign? I'm loosing my mind here. I'd rather them tell me something, good or bad. It doesn't help that I just moved! I did change my address with the post office and them, but with that administration who knows

Just curious, but for those who were accepted was it a big or small envelope

If you check the thread from last year, I was one of the people panicking because everyone else seemed to have gotten their acceptance letter already except for me. But in the end it came--about this time (end of Feb). It was in a big envelope. They will NOT tell you anything over the phone, but if they call and ask you to bring in health forms that's a very good sign, since they don't ask for health information from students who weren't accepted. Also, if you applied you should already have an account in their system telling you which parts of your application are complete and which are missing. Once you see health information up there, you're in.

I just emailed them this morning! I called them but they just continuously transfer you... In the end, I was transferred to someone's mailbox which was too full for messages...Hopefully I can get a reply!!! I'm so anxious about where I stand! CONGRATS AND GOOD LUCK TO ALL THOSE ACCEPTED!!!

To answer the question about the missing micro lab. This happened to me LAST year, I had really been screwed over by the admin there. I am almost 100 percent sure they will not let you take a micro lab concurrently with the beginning of the program. If you can somehow manage to complete the class before June then you should try everything you can, call-email-drop in. If you are like me (I didnt bother with my prereq i sorta gave up, took the pre reqs summer of 09 and applied AGAIN for 2010) you will receive a giant yellow envelope with health forms congratulating you for being put on a alternate student list (wait list). I dont want to be a downer but you might need to take the pre req over the summer and apply again next year but you have nothing to lose so TRY!!!

i'm an applicant for 2010 and i'm still waiting to hear back. i called today and they told me if i don't hear from them by early may to call them back. ack! did anyone on here get accepted this late?! at this point i'm thinking they're waiting to hear who will confirm their acceptance letters:(

Still waiting! And I applied in November. It sucks that they can't get on the ball with this. I may have to quit my job and preparations must be made.

I Too am an applicant (or reapplicant) and still haven't heard from then. Around this time last year was when I received a large envelope from them tellig me I was on a waiting list, I haven't even gotten that this year so I'm a bit nervous too. I Also think that they might be awaiting confirmation or maybe the people who have received acceptance were early applicants?

I wish I would get an answer too. Does anyone know what their system is? It's really driving me crazy. Of course i want to get into the school but i need to make financial arrangements. Its killing me

I too haven't heard yet. They called last week to ask me if I sent my latest transcripts. They made me email them even though I sent them. They said they had tons of papers to go through and wanted to see them immediately. This is annoying. Anyone hear recently?

Nope. No mail today! I sent them the grade report from my two final courses in January. Sigh. I wish they would just hurry up already

You should really take that as a good sign that they are calling you for paperwork instead of disqualifying you.
