Questions about life in New York

Published

Hello everybody! I'm new in this forum. I'm from the Philippines. I will soon be working in New York as a licensed registered nurse. I have already signed a contract with an agency in New York. Can somebody in this forum give me an idea on life in New York - the best location for my family to stay (I have two kids), information on taxes, apartment rates, etc. Thanks. It's difficult to start a new life in a foreign place hence, any information will be greatly appreciated. :)

WhiteGloves has a fairly decent reputation. They do most of their staffing aorund New York City and have been around for quite a few years.

Where you live will depend on where they are placing you. The city is so vast but most places can be reached quite easily with public transpotation. Car insurance, as well as parking, is outrageously expensive and you are better off without either if you can do it. Talking about $400-$700 per month for parking..........definitely no fun.

Many choose to put the kids in private schools, but again it depend on the area where you are living and what is available to you. Housing is quite expensive in NY, so purchasing a house may be out of the question for you until you have been there at least a few years.

Thanks, I guess I made the right choice.

Would you know what are the possible hospital assignments?

My 2 cents...

From what I know, White Glove, is a pretty reputable agency and like mentioned earlier has been around for quite some time now.WhiteGloveCare.com is their website and maybe can help you with some general information. It seems like a pretty difficult situation for you being that you don't know exactly where your assignment will be. In the medical office where i preveiously worked, a few of our patients were RN's who worked with white glove. They both worked at Long Island College hospital in Brooklyn, NY, but they also both lived there as well. So maybe their placement will be based on their need as well as your desire. But as long as it's NYC based and not upstate, it doesnt matter much because transportation is very accessible. Personally, I'd come alone before bringing my family not only for finding a place to live and schooling for my children but also to get a feel for city living. Its a big move, and if your more familiar it will be a little easier on your children. I cant speak on NJ's schools but there are some decent private school in ny depending on the ages of your children as well as your location. And when you are ready to buy your home, NYC is not the place to stay, much too expensive though the prices of houses on the outskirts of the city arent too bad like in Long Island and with transportation, its easier to commute back and forth. But to find further information, the internet is a beautiful thing, you can check out newspaper classifieds to find more info on housing, like nytimes.com or nydailynews.com to start you off. Either way, Best of luck to you and your family.

Hi Suzzane. i am also from the philippines and also will work in NY (they say it is downpart of NY). Probabaly in long island can u give me info about my agency, the place, salary and a good school for my daughter whose entering nursery

How about the schools in upstate NY?

I used to live in upstate NY, but now reside in FL. I can say in answer to your questions the schools are okay. It is like any area here in the US. There are good schools and bad schools. Each area has both. The more affluent the area the better the schools. This is very sad to say, but true most of the time: If you live in a low rent district of a city, you will find a lower quality school. Most of the rural areas in upstate have decent schools. I found the problems in the city enviornment. Albany Schenectady Troy area. Hope this helps, but I think once you get up here the best persons to ask, are your co-workers.]

Well i just wish the nursery school is ok coz i know for a child to adjust is really hard. Do u think the working condition and the salary in long island is ok?

Long Island is near New York City. Long Island has been known for it's affluent residents. It is the higher rent district.

New York state is so big. Most persons when you say New York and they are not from there automatically think the whole state is New York City.

New York City is just a small part of the state even though it has the majority of population.

What made you pick New York to move to?

Honestly, its not my first choice, well its never been my choice coz i heard the tax is high, living in NY is very expensive and a s a single mom it is not the best place to have a child grow up.

It was the fastest way to be in US and worked as an immigrant nurse. since, my papers is affected by retrogression.

Well i signed up in a rehab center under the recruitment agency - SENTOSA.

What can u say about this agency? :D

Never heard of them to be honest. However, they could be new. I have been out of New York for 9 years now.

NYC is very expensive. I am concerned that you are only making 20 bucks an hour in New York City. Down here in Florida that is a great salary. Up there, things are so high. How long is your commitment, before you can move on?

it is a 3 years contract. my freind whose workingas a nurse in manhattan told me that after my contract, i should try texas.

Texas most definitly. MY daughter just moved there. The housing is really inexpensive. The salaries are really high. I am considering moving out there myself.
