Questions about life in New York

Published

Hello everybody! I'm new in this forum. I'm from the Philippines. I will soon be working in New York as a licensed registered nurse. I have already signed a contract with an agency in New York. Can somebody in this forum give me an idea on life in New York - the best location for my family to stay (I have two kids), information on taxes, apartment rates, etc. Thanks. It's difficult to start a new life in a foreign place hence, any information will be greatly appreciated. :)

Where in New York? New York City is quite different from most of the areas as you do not need a car there because of excellent public transportation.

But outside of NYC, you will need a car for most areas. All depends on which area that you will be in.

Do you have any idea where you are being assigned? Then we could give you much more specific information.

Thanks Suzanne for a quick reply. Unfortunately, I still don't have any idea where I will be assigned. The agency told me that they will inform me where I will be assigned when I get there. This is one of my worries because I cannot really prepare. All I can do now is get general informations.

Is your family coming with you or are they following you? New York City is expensive to live in and the quality of public schools is less then optimum. You do not need a car, there is the subway, buses and cabs, as well as private car services. You can live outside the city and take the trains into work, which epople do do. Outside of the city, you need a car to get around. Public transporation is available, including buses but some counties do not provide 24 hour services. The public school systems upstate are generally good.

I would suggest you family follow you, once you have found a place to live.

Thanks for the informations and advise. That would me help me a lot in planninng things.Actually, my plan is to go there first then my family will follow after 3 months and planning to live outside of the city (New Jersey?). Your suggestion would only confirm that I'm on the right track of planning things.I'm kinda particular with the education of my kids.Sending them in a good school is a big deal for me. Please feed me more informations .Thanks in advance!

I can't offer you any information about the N.J. school systems. My SO's grandson attends a magnet public school in the city. And I am more familiar with the schools in upstate NY.

Are they even guaranteeing that you will be staying in NY?

The state can vary widely in temperature, culture, schooling, etc. so it is hard to give you more specifics.

Which agency did you sign with? Then maybe I can narrow it down for you.

ARO COMMUNITY SERVICES INC. Do you know this agency? If so, can you give some more backgrounds and its reputation as a nursing agency. Thanks

I have never heard a thing ever mentioned about them before...sorry. :o

This agency barely gives information about my assignment .That's why I'm doing my inquiries on my own. I can smell something fishy about this agency. But there's nothing i can do about it, i just have to make good with them 'coz i already signed a contract with them. Any advise on how I can deal with the situation.

Actually my plan is, to bring my family (2 kids) upfront let them stay in california (with my parents) look for a house and ask my family to follow within 3-6 months. Actually my parents want to relocate and stay with us so they can look after their grandsons. :chuckle

My agency is whiteglove, any info about them?
