Hello everybody! I'm new in this forum. I'm from the Philippines. I will soon be working in New York as a licensed registered nurse. I have already signed a contract with an agency in New York. Can somebody in this forum give me an idea on life in New York - the best location for my family to stay (I have two kids), information on taxes, apartment rates, etc. Thanks. It's difficult to start a new life in a foreign place hence, any information will be greatly appreciated. :)
Hi Ziggy,
I am also going to be in Newyork. My husband is a software/Graphic proffessional. I would like to get some information about good consultants in LI and Nassauo county. Basically he wants to look for a job from India through website or so.. essentially will help him to obtain a job by the time he joins with me in NY.
thanks and regards,
Nimisha

Hi Heaven,
I have a few pearls of wisdom, as my personal work experience is mainly Long Island (3 hospitals), NY, I have seen much. I have worked in 3 hospitals in Suffolk county LI, and have been a patient in NYC and Nassau county hospitals. From my experience, the pay is great on LI relative to the costs. The working conditions are suspect, so ask here or the hospital about nurse to patient ratios.
In the city, pay is ok, relative to the cost of living. Thing is i have worked with Philippino people, and other nurses from other countries, and they tell me they do well here on the Island as compared to the city. Furthermore, there are tons of apartments you can find cheaply on LI if you look indepth, and do some research, like you are doing now.
The best salary(cost) to living ratio in NY, I feel is on LI, as your salary will be much better than your cost of living, relative to the city. The thing is that it takes some research, and time to find these "gems".
There are tons of apartments, and rentals that you can live in on Long Island that would cost you relatively less than finding one in the city. Point is, unless you are willing to pay greatly for convience, look for a place to live on LI, and without using broker. Going through a real estate broker becomes more expensive. Basically what I am saying is that the cost of living will be cheaper if you do not use a broker.
Finding a Long Island apartment, (brooklyn, Queens, Nassau, Suffolk etc) and job with little travel would increase your cost to salary ratio. Furthermore, Nassau, and Suffolk county generally have better public schools according to the reasearch.
Anyway, I heard Texas has great hosptials and working conditions, as do some in California. Though they are big states, as NY, and I have never been there, I heard from friends, fellow workers that have moved there love it, and are comfortable.
A 3 year contract sounds extensive to me. Just be sure that where you decide to go is something that you can handle for 36 months, both finacially and emotionally. Thats a long commitment, as most travel/immigrant jobs are much shorter. For example, I have friends that hated a place they went to work, and had to stay based on their contract. 3 years is a long time, especially if you have children. It would be beneficial that where you ultimately decide to work, you have an option to leave/transfer to a different place after a "normal' 8/12 week assignment.
Anyway, goodluck, ask me for specifics if you you wish, as i know how hard it is to establish yourself within a career, especially far from your "home"
