Questions about IEN Registration with CNO

Published

Hello..I just want you to share my situation right now. I just graduated my BSN from the philippines this april 2011. i am already here in ontario as an immigrant. Currently I am just waiting for my credentials to be sent to me from the philippines as some of it should be passed along with the application forms which I requested from CNO. I'm having a hard time thinking of what position to apply for my asessment: RN or RPN? I'm worried that if I apply for RN they will not recognize my BSN and tell me to study from the start all over again as I dont have my philippine nursing license..so Im planning to apply for RPN. which is better..?

and will the CNO require me of philippine nursing license? i'd still don't know what to do next- do I still need to take the local NLE?

Some people tell me I don't need it while may aunt in the US told me that I need it to have NCLEX someday and work there??.

I'll appreciate all your comments regarding this.thank you so much.:)

Nursing jobs are becoming quite scarce all across the country these days but especially so in Ontario. None of the provinces is recruiting from outside Canada and most available positions are being filled with local newly-graduated nurses. So looking to another province isn't a solution.

Most of us here take a dim view of agencies who promise people all sorts of things that they can't deliver. Loopholes are more like nooses, people who try to slip through them usually end up choked. Coming here through an "arranged employment offer" as a clerk or live-in caregiver leaves you open to exploitation, because you're then at the mercy of whomever has hired you. Temporary foreign employees from all over the world find themselves in situations where they're forced to work for less than minimum wage, for unpaid overtime, crammed into barely adequate housing and too afraid to say anything due to threats from their sponsors. The exploiters are their fellow countrymen, while their Canadian employers are complicit by looking the other way. Also, coming here as a caregiver or clerk when your real purpose is to work as a registered nurse or licensed practical nurse could be viewed by immigration as entering the country on false pretenses, or fraud, and you could be deported. There is a great deal of scrutiny placed on these types of applications now and people are being deported. Those who truly want to work as nurses in Canada will do whatever it takes, and pay whatever costs are incurred, and persevere over however long it all takes to do it legally. There are no shortcuts. Please be very careful and trust your instincts. If it sounds too good to be true, it is!

Hello everybody.

Happy new year to all of you.

My question is related with the IELTS requirement of CNO.

I have got my IELTS score recently. Overall is : 7 (general module)

L: 8.5

R:6

W:6.5

S:7

It is unfortunate that i got 6 in reading. Last time I gave ielts i got 6 in speaking but over 7 in rest of the sections.

This is the reason i am very depressed because of such continous failures. Can i still send all my documents to CNO for evaluation. Will they consider my score or it will be a mere wastage.

Though i have completed my B.Sc in Nursing and post graduate certifiacte in diabetes education and PG diploma in health management with good scores.

Regards

CNO is pretty clear that the minimum score for any part of the exam is 6.5. But if you wait until you have a passing score on IELTS to submit your documents to them, it'll only extend your waiting period. Maybe you should submit and have them tell you that you need to retake the exam, and while you're waiting to get to that point, brush up on your reading skills so that you can pass right away. That'll cut down on the amount of time you'll ultimately spend on the process.

thanks for the reply Janfrn.!!

Do they consider clusbbed scorings or not. I mean if i send them two of my ielts score, any possibility that they might consider me.

Thanks

They aren't going to look at aggregate scores. They're only interested in the one with the most recent date. Language is like any other skill - if you don't use it you lose it. 25 years ago I was reasonably good at understanding spoken French (listening comprehension) and fair at speaking it - although I never could have functioned in a health care environment. 10 years ago I could still understand most of what I heard, but my speaking was getting really rusty. 5 years ago I couldn't keep up with my spouse when he was speaking with his mother any more, and when I was in Montreal in 2009 I had to let my daughter interpret for me. So you see, language skills aren't fixed. That's why the Colleges require passing scores no older than 2 years when they consider applicants whose first language isn't English.

Hello everyone.

I just want to share this to you because I feel so devastated about it. Last January 5 of this year I went to CNO to follow up my RN and RPN application. The staff in the reception area gladly checked my files in the computer and told me that my RN application is still on process but my RPN was completed already. He even told me that I should expect the letter of direction sometime this week. I was so happy about it, and so I waited for days until now.

Still no letter yet, I decided to call CNO today and was able to talked to one of their customer representatives to ask if the letter was mailed already, otherwise I am willing to pick it up personally in the office. To my surprise she told me that my RPN application is still UNDER REVIEW and not yet completed. She told memaybe I misunderstood the information given to me. I was really taken aback by this. I don't know what to do because I feel I was doomed.:crying2:

Can anyone advise me regarding this? I am so confused. Thank you.

Anyways, :doh:Happy New Year everyone!

yes, and you need local nursing registration number for filling up the RPN or RN registration. it is mandatory

Your feelings are your choice, but there is no benefit from feeling devastated and doomed while waiting for a decision from the CNO. The CNO's decisions are based on analytical reasoning, as are the CPNRE and CRNE exam questions. If I were an IEN waiting to hear from the CNO, I would focus on thinking about the application process from an analytical point of view rather than an emotional one. I would recognize that based on previous IEN pass rates, I am statistically more likely than a Canadian trained nurse to encounter difficulty passing either exam. I would begin studying for the exam from the moment I submitted my application to the CNO and continue studying until the day before I wrote the exam.

Is there any way to find out if an RN program outside of canada will qualify as the minimum education requirement for upgrading? I am a Canadian, but my boyfriend is moving to the USA for a few years because he got transferred for work, so I'm just wondering how I would decide where to go for school to ensure it would be eligible for the upgrading.

I think the only way really is to see what the province will require or look at what nursing schools/universities have down for their curriculm
