Question about WSSU Accelerated

Published

Hello!

I"m applying to WSSU's accelerated nursing program and am very confused about the funding possibility from North Carolina Baptist Hospital. Help!

There is a good chance that I will be moving after graduation. If I accept the funding, can I get out of the contract?

If I don't accept the contract with NCBH or if I don't get funding, can I apply for financial aid from WSSU like other undergraduates?

If I accept the funding and work at NCBH, is it possible to choose what area you work in? For example, if I really only wanted to work in L&D -- how much flexibility can I have about where I work? Also, is it possible to work parttime?

Thanks so much! I can't seem to get clear answers from WSSU on this, so not sure where else to turn!

I'm applying to the ABSN program too! From what I understand...the scholarship is a separate application & interview with NCBH. WSSU told me that NCBH funds a select group of students each year. They never know how many scholarships they will fund. If you do get the scholarship, then you'll work at NCBH to pay them back. If you move, then you'll have to work out an agreement with them. I met someone who didn't like the job prospects there so he worked at another hospital for a year and then transferred to NCBH once a job he liked opened up. I think he said he paid them $500/mo for that year he worked elsewhere. You won't be able to work at L&D at NCBH because they don't do deliveries there. Forsyth Medical Ctr has an L&D dept.

My guess is you'll be offered nursing positions where they have openings at NCBH when you graduate.

I didn't realize NCBH didn't have L&D! Thanks for the heads up and the info -- very much appreciated.

I don't know if this is true or not. But someone told me that the L&D nurses at Forsyth Medical Center are actually employees of Baptist Hospital.

Ok. I just asked an L&D nurse at FMC. She said the L&D nurses are employees of FMC not Baptist Hospital.

Hi mom2kidzz -- you ended up applying to WSSU, right? Any idea when we'll hear the decision? I'm working on my WSSU general application now.

Also, if we are accepted (fingers crossed), when do classes start -- do we start on the regular Spring semester schedule like other WSSU students?

Good luck to you!!

I did apply to the accelerated program. I THINK we'll start receiving decision letters sometime in Oct.

The accelerated program will begin in January. Not sure about the actual date.

Let me know when you hear from WSSU. Good luck to you too!

Just found out today that I've been accepted into WSSU's accelerated BSN program. I now need to set up an interview at WFUBMC to see if I'll get the scholarship!

Congratulations on your acceptance into the program. As a alum, I know you will leave the program very prepared for your career as a nurse. Much Luck, try your best to not get frustrated, the accelerated is just as intense as the regular program I went through in the late 90's.

Hi. I have few questions about the WSSU accelerated BSN program:

1. What are the chances of being accepted into the program? I am currently a teacher and found out that I have to take 4 courses during the summer sessions before even being considered as an applicant (?). I hate to take these courses and find out I will not be accepted anyway.

2. How rigorous is the program? Is it still possible to have a part time job while you are in this program?

3. Is there any scholarship/loans that WSSU or NCBH offers to help offset the monthly expenses? I just thought that $500 monthly stipend would not be enough for my family if I have to stop working. I have heard that there are govt. loans for women who are going back to school(?)

Thank you very much. Any advise would be greatly appreciated!

Hey there,

I can't answer your first question. I'd advise you to make an appt. with Ms. Garrison in the nursing dept at WSSU to talk about admittance to the program.

I'm not in the program yet. Will start next month. I've heard that it's very rigorous. WSSU advises you not to work at all. Although I've heard a few folks have gone thru the program & worked PT.

The scholarship offered by NCBH covers tuition, fees, books + a monthly $500/mo stipend. The nursing school just sent out a list of other scholarship options. Private message me with your email address & I'll forward it to you.

Good luck!

hello mom2kidzz,

i read your post regarding the accelerated nursing program at wssu. how is the program thus far? is it as difficult (the coursework, clinical work) as the regular two yr program?? did you get the scholarship from ncbh or another form of scholarship? your response is highly appreciated.

i am thinking about applying in august. i have a bachelor in psychology, and i am looking to get into the administrative part of nursing. i have most of the prereq, so i am hoping to get accepted.

thanks!!
