Negotiating Start Date - HELP!
I always wish people would post follow ups to the questions they asked.. so here I am! I took the job and got a vacation to Spain to boot because of some savvy negotiating. My manager said that I was welcome to take the 6 weeks, but that she couldn't promise the job would still be here when I got back. I didn't want to take that chance, so I negotiated 2 unpaid weeks instead, which I still got paid for during the Spain gig. In the end there were no hard feelings whatsoever, and I have no regrets about being upfront with my manager and negotiating that trip.

Negotiating Start Date - HELP!
Thanks for all the feedback! Just to clarify, I would never expect a 6 week paid vacation from the unit! I would ask to either train and go for an unpaid absence or start on the unit in August. Even though I described the opportunity in Spain as a paid vacation, it is technically a short-term job offer. I'm hoping and praying that if I get an offer, the nurse managers will show a little flexibility in helping me transition onto the unit - and if not I don't think it hurts to ask. Women always sell themselves short in negotiating job offers -- how will we get what we want if we don't at least try? So does anyone have any experience negotiating something a little unorthodox before starting a job? Did you get it?

Negotiating Start Date - HELP!
Hi! I am graduating soon and I was fortunate enough to get two interviews so far. I did a second interview for one job and really really want to work on the unit I interviewed with. Given that I was asked to come back for the second interview, I think I have a good chance of getting it - and would want to accept the job if I did. I like the unit and the managers! I am so grateful for this opportunity and I know it takes many new grads months just to get interviews. BUT... Long story, I was offered a chance to essentially take a 1.5 month paid vacation as a chaperone to a study abroad program in Spain. Of course, I can't let that pass without taking it! So if I DO get the job offer, the job would start in March. I will be gone from July - mid August. Can I negotiate that - is there any way a nurse manager will let me leave for six weeks so soon after starting? How flexible are the terms when you start a job? Any tips for negotiating this leave if I do get the call for the job offer?

Anyone applying to ABSN at WSSU for Jan 2011
Unfortunately, I also don't know what to do to prepare - I don't even know which classes we'll be taking or books we'll need! A related question, though - we don't need to register for classes until the orientation, right? I also remember they said we would receive information about a criminal background check and drug test, but I haven't had any info about how/where to do the drug test. If anyone else has info about that, please share! Thanks all.

Question about WSSU Accelerated
Hi mom2kidzz -- you ended up applying to WSSU, right? Any idea when we'll hear the decision? I'm working on my WSSU general application now. Also, if we are accepted (fingers crossed), when do classes start -- do we start on the regular Spring semester schedule like other WSSU students? Good luck to you!!

CNM in North Carolina?
Hi everyone, I am moving to Charlotte, North Carolina and am planning on becoming a CNM (eventually!). What is the climate for CNMS in this area? Are there jobs or opportunities for CNMs to attend births? What about homebirth? Thanks!

Question about WSSU Accelerated
Hello! I"m applying to WSSU's accelerated nursing program and am very confused about the funding possibility from North Carolina Baptist Hospital. Help! There is a good chance that I will be moving after graduation. If I accept the funding, can I get out of the contract? If I don't accept the contract with NCBH or if I don't get funding, can I apply for financial aid from WSSU like other undergraduates? If I accept the funding and work at NCBH, is it possible to choose what area you work in? For example, if I really only wanted to work in L&D -- how much flexibility can I have about where I work? Also, is it possible to work parttime? Thanks so much! I can't seem to get clear answers from WSSU on this, so not sure where else to turn!
