  1. My sleep issues got worse and not better. Melatonin and Benadryl stopped working. I tried ambien and still could not get more than 4 hrs of sleep at a time. Next my dr suggested trazodone. Nope, that didn't work either. I changed jobs. Now working a 2nd shift (2:30-11pm). No more sleep troubles!
  2. Yeah, I have the same problem. Always wake up in the middle of the night on my 1st night off even though I'm exhausted. Sometimes I take one 5mg melatonin & two 25mg benadryls. That does help. If I wake up, I stay in bed & read with a booklight or watch Netflix on my iPhone (using earbuds) so I don't wake my husband.
  3. Ok, I'm having difficulty sleeping on my nights off. Anyone else having this problem? I am rarely sleepy on my 12 hr night shifts. I am home and in bed by 0800 and sleep until 1600. I use blackout curtains, loud box fan and also keep my eyes closed if I have to make a potty break. I have a terrible time sleeping on my nights off - very fragmented sleep. I've been experimenting with getting up earlier on my 1st day off. For example, I got up at 1500. But fell asleep during a movie with my family that night. Went to bed at 0000 but woke up at 0500! Stayed in bed until 0700 trying desperately to sleep. Got up & went about my day. Took a 2 hr nap that afternoon. Still dozed off while watching tv with the family that night. Went to bed at 0000 & fell fast asleep. But woke up at 0300!!! Toss & turned for about 45 min. Then got up, took a melatonin & read until 0500. Slept until 1000. Heading back to work tonight. Anybody else experiencing this? Any suggestions? I love my job but want to love my life when I'm home. Soooo frustrated!
  4. I have a pair of Cherokee Core Stretch scrubs and I love them! Super soft & just the right amount of stretch. They are a bit snug right out of the dryer but they stretch a lot by the end of a shift. I probably should've gone a size down in the pants.
  5. If you receive funding from Baptist, then your books are paid for. You just show up at the bookstore and they hand you a stack of books. Books are distributed in packs throughout the year.
  6. Congratulations!! We finish on February 15, 2012! So excited for that. If you're using the same textbooks, here are what we used: Intro to Nursing I & II: Fundamentals of Nursing by Potter & Perry, 7th edition Clinical Skills & Techniques by Perry & Potter, 7th edition Pharmacology: Clinical Drug Therapy by Abrams, Pennington & Lammon, 9th ed I wouldn't buy the books though. If you receive funding thru the hospital then your books are paid for. You should receive an email shortly from the HR at the hospital for an interview. You'll interview & then will hear if you've been selected for the funding. We didn't hear until mid-December. It was SO HARD waiting to hear that news! And yes, if you receive the funding, you can still apply for financial aid to cover your other expenses. I'm not sure about areas to rent in. I could check with another classmate.
  7. Haven't heard of that. I'd check with Wakemed's human resources department.
  8. We have clinicals for the following courses: Intro to Professional Nursing III Adult Nursing I Mental Health Nursing Child Health Nursing Maternal/Newborn Nursing Community Health Nursing Adult II Nursing
  9. Yes, usually two 12 hr days/week.
  10. We have students commuting from Mocksville, Charlotte, High Point, Burlington, Greensboro, etc. The first block of classes (10 wks long) had classes on Tues, Wed, Thurs, Fri. We usually have Mondays off, unless we have a rare clinical day scheduled then. When you start clinicals, they are usually 12 hr days from 6a - 6p. Those days are harder on the commuting folks.
  11. Hey there. WSSU didn't tell us our class average GPA so I really don't know. I was never sure if they were looking our overall GPA or our prerequisite GPA. Or maybe they look at both. You can check with Ms. Garrison in the nursing office for more info. Good luck!
  12. You definitely need the textbook (potter & perry), the skills lab book, and the APA book. Not sure ErinJane1 - you'll just have to wait & see. Sorry, that's not what you wanted to hear.
  13. Hi, I did receive funding thru Baptist. They are paying my tuition, fees, books & a $500 monthly stipend. I did pay for my uniform & have bought a few extra books. In return, I've signed a contract with the hospital that I will work for them full time for 3 yrs. It's going ok. It's probably harder than a 2 yr traditional program because we go through the same material at a much quicker pace. I'm studying all the time because we have so many tests. Our clinical days are longer because we have to get in the same amount of hours as the traditional students. We are 1/3 of the way through the program & it's definitely been challenging. However, I do recommend it if you have good study habits, don't get too stressed and can be flexible. Our schedule changes frequently. You can't really plan in advance. I'm not sure if they are accepting students who haven't completed all their prerequisites. How many do you have left to take? WSSU looks more favorably at applicants who have completed all their prereqs prior to submitting an application. There's a student in our class who applied last year & was not accepted because she hadn't finished all her prereqs before applying. She reapplied this year & was accepted. Let me know if you have any more questions. Good luck!
  14. Yes, you can enroll in Intro to Professional Nursing I without being admitted into the nursing program. You do have to be admitted to the university though. Again, I don't know the GPAs of my fellow classmates so I just don't know if you have a good shot at being accepted.
