Question about WSSU Accelerated

U.S.A. North Carolina

Published

Hello!

I"m applying to WSSU's accelerated nursing program and am very confused about the funding possibility from North Carolina Baptist Hospital. Help!

There is a good chance that I will be moving after graduation. If I accept the funding, can I get out of the contract?

If I don't accept the contract with NCBH or if I don't get funding, can I apply for financial aid from WSSU like other undergraduates?

If I accept the funding and work at NCBH, is it possible to choose what area you work in? For example, if I really only wanted to work in L&D -- how much flexibility can I have about where I work? Also, is it possible to work parttime?

Thanks so much! I can't seem to get clear answers from WSSU on this, so not sure where else to turn!

Hi,

I did receive funding thru Baptist. They are paying my tuition, fees, books & a $500 monthly stipend. I did pay for my uniform & have bought a few extra books. In return, I've signed a contract with the hospital that I will work for them full time for 3 yrs.

It's going ok. It's probably harder than a 2 yr traditional program because we go through the same material at a much quicker pace. I'm studying all the time because we have so many tests. Our clinical days are longer because we have to get in the same amount of hours as the traditional students.

We are 1/3 of the way through the program & it's definitely been challenging. However, I do recommend it if you have good study habits, don't get too stressed and can be flexible. Our schedule changes frequently. You can't really plan in advance.

I'm not sure if they are accepting students who haven't completed all their prerequisites. How many do you have left to take? WSSU looks more favorably at applicants who have completed all their prereqs prior to submitting an application.

There's a student in our class who applied last year & was not accepted because she hadn't finished all her prereqs before applying. She reapplied this year & was accepted.

Let me know if you have any more questions.

Good luck!

Hi mom2kidzz,

l have applied to the accelerated program l want to know if you have any idea about the gpa cut point for the pre-requiste courses and the 1st bachelors.

thanks, mmuaa32.

Hey there. WSSU didn't tell us our class average GPA so I really don't know. I was never sure if they were looking our overall GPA or our prerequisite GPA. Or maybe they look at both. You can check with Ms. Garrison in the nursing office for more info.

Good luck!

Hi mom2kidzz,

Thanks for replying. l tried to talk to ms. Garrison but couldn't get the chance. I found out about wssu late so my transcripts were not screen, since they were busy registering new students for the fall. Anyway l still went ahead and apply as l have already completed all the pre-requistes from a school in kentucky. l am praying hard they transfer so that l get admitted.

Thanks, pls if there is anything else abt the admission process l need to know l will be grateful.

Your posts are very helpful and timely manner you respond is great. keep it up.

I just applied to WSSU Accelerated program for the spring also!! Good Luck to you!

I just applied as well. Good Luck to you!!

Hi mom2kidzz,

Thank God l have been accepted in to the 2012 absn program and l have a couple of questions to ask.

1. Do you know if you get Baptist funding you can still take financial aid like loans.

2. Pls l want to get started with the courses expecially pharmacolgy can you let me know the books you are using and that of intro to nursing.

3. Am coming from out of state can you recommend any nice and quiet place to rent in winston salem if you can, l checked a couple online but do not know which one pick.

4. The program says 13months, so when are you guys graduating, since l have not received my package get, l just got a email on teusday to confirm acceptance.

5. Since you are in the program l will like to talk to you for guidance and advice as a head start. l promise l will not take your time from studying, l know how intense accelerated program could me.

thank you and hope to hear from you.

Congratulations!!

We finish on February 15, 2012! So excited for that.

If you're using the same textbooks, here are what we used:

Intro to Nursing I & II:

Fundamentals of Nursing by Potter & Perry, 7th edition

Clinical Skills & Techniques by Perry & Potter, 7th edition

Pharmacology:

Clinical Drug Therapy by Abrams, Pennington & Lammon, 9th ed

I wouldn't buy the books though. If you receive funding thru the hospital then your books are paid for.

You should receive an email shortly from the HR at the hospital for an interview. You'll interview & then will hear if you've been selected for the funding. We didn't hear until mid-December. It was SO HARD waiting to hear that news!

And yes, if you receive the funding, you can still apply for financial aid to cover your other expenses.

I'm not sure about areas to rent in. I could check with another classmate.

Thanks Mom2kidzz,

Am very grateful for your reply it has relieve me.

Pls, do check with the apartments for me, am looking for either 1 bedroom or a studio to rent.

Thanks again and wishes you strong finish and hope to see you in january.

Hey Mom2kidzz another question for you....

I was looking to get a jump on books for the Spring as well. When you say they pay for the books if you get funded do they give you a stpiend to the bookstore or do you recieve somethng similar to a refund check?

Thanks ahead of time for the feedback.

Hello Bootsie 1367,

Congrats on being accepted into the program. Will you be commuting from anywhere? are you from the area?

Hello

Congrats on getting into the program. I am also looking for places to live in the area. Have you found anything nice? I always read this blog but never joined until tonight because I wanted to ask you that question.
