Question...

I work in a nursing home and a resident I regularly take care of is moving to new york next month. She loves all the staff and has asked for our phone numbers to keep in touch maybe a few times a year. Is this okay to do or not?

I would have to say giving out your personal information is a bad idea. I would give her a card with the LTCs address and suggest she send a card to those she wishes to acknowledge via the LTC.

Okay thanks.

Any other opinions?

Not sure what this has to do with HIPAA?

Well it's not quite HIPAA, but I wasn't sure where to put it.

Have her call the LTC facility so she can speak to all of you that she wants to at once--If she wants to call a few times here and there, that is a great option. I would say that you adore her like family (providing you do....) but "you know we are here most all the time, so call us here and we can all talk to you"

The last thing I would want to have happen is for her to call someone's personal number and tell about how she "hates" such and so and they are treating her "horrible" or any other tales of woe that then you would be obligated to follow up on. And she may go to the new place and LOVE it, but transitions are tricky things....
