Is this a HIPAA issue?

While working at the healthcare facility, I saw a family friend who was there for a procedure. Later, this friend/patient spoke to my family member and said, "Hey, I saw (my name) while I was having this (specific) procedure." Later yet (as in a week or so), while I was with my family member and this friend, my friend said, "Oh, and by the way, my (specific procedure) turned out okay." And when they said that, I said, "oh good!" Was my saying that a HIPAA violation, if anyone else (namely my family member who knew, because that friend told them, about the procedure)?

Based on the responses we have given you in the past, what do you think the answer is?

Usually start with whether or not PHI was accessed, used or disclosed inappropriately.

What is your assessment of this situation with that question in mind?

I'm gonna say no. The friend who was the patient themselves disclosed it, and my reponse was in response to that, without adding anything or disclosing anything -- correct? Thank you.

Correct! 👍🏼

You will find that if people in your social circles know you're a healthcare worker, they will bring up matters related to their health rather frequently. How you handled it is perfectly fine. Really the main issue is the number of times they seem to be asking for advice. The answer there is "you should ask your provider if you're concerned.”

Otherwise it's okay to be normally social; it's okay to respond with things like "I'm glad it all turned out" or "I'm sorry it isn't turning out the way you would've hoped" or whatever.

Don't bring up information you learned at your workplace, and don't add additional info if they bring up a personal topic you know something about.
