question about the Classifieds

Published

Is there a seasonality to the demand for nurses? It seems every year in the early spring the number of ads in the classifieds explodes. In the middle of winter it seems like the number of ads is lower than normal. Am I the only one that notices this? Since I am going from memory I could be wrong.

I wouldn't think all the new grads would have jobs promised by now, so that could be a big part of it. But there are also those who graduated last year and are now coming up on their "mandatory one year at one place before moving on" date.

Also, people who want to relocate tend to do so in the spring/summer months. It correlates with real estate sales, too. Families with kids like to move when school is out.

I agree with jemb. Most of the "movement" in the job/hiring market happens in the summer. Most people are looking and thinking about getting jobs in the from about January on through the early summer. Fewer people switch jobs in the Fall or around the Christmas holidays -- though there always are a few.

As advertisments cost a surprising amount of money, hospitals prefer to spend the highest proportion of their advertising budget during the spring, when there is the highest potential of attracting candidates. It's not an accident: it's a conscious decision.

here in south texas our population doubles between october and april with "winter texans" from the upper mid-western states. kinda like florida snowbirds. thats when the big hiring push is on.

In the business companies I've worked for, they sometimes put on a hiring freeze around the end of the year, since at that point they're trying to meet their monetary goal for the year. Then with the turn of the next fiscal year, they have more money and can hire people if they need them. We almost always have to tighten our belts towards the end of each year with ordering new supplies, hiring, etc. Perhaps it's the same way with hospitals since they are, essentially, businesses that need to make profits, as well.

I guess I got the answer to my question this week. The classified have a full page ad that says, "attention new grad nurses".

amk1964- I used to live in McAllen. What part of S. Texas are you in?

I'm originally from S. AZ. Demand for nurses there explodes in the winter months, and drops back to normal in the summer, due to the "snow-birds."

There are lots of nurses who live up north in the summer and come down to the sun belt to work in the winter.

Up here in Ontario, things slow down in march and april when the budget is due. So even though the hospitals are short staffed, they don't hire until after the budget is done. And of course with the sars going on in toronto, they are not hiring. Only a few hospitals are.

Hopefully, things will pick up soon here. When I graduated, it was hard to get a job. No hospitals were hiring. I believe the nurses went south at that time.
