I thought it would be a good idea to start a thread for PVAMU CON 2011 hopefulls! As you will see, I have a lot of questions and concerns! I am at Texas Southern University and I am applying for spring 2011. My science, core, and overall GPA's are above a 3.5 and i have taking the HESI and recieved 84 on math and grammar, 85 on reading comp, but i missed the A&P by 3pts.. i made a 72:mad:! But it was b/c i was taking the exam for UT and they require the vocab and i before i began the A&P section I was crying b/c i failed the vocab section.. i was ******! Anyways, any adive on what to study for the vocab section or A&P section (even though i found it somewhat easy)? I hope this thread will help us in the long run! :)
And if there is already a thread for sorry didnt find it!
knalimol: are there any books for the first semester that you reccommend we should rent? did u need to use the books access codes/cds for any of the classes, for assignments or mandatory work?
studentp: pv main campus is unorganized, i can vouch for this because im currently a pv student at the main campos. however the nursing program itself, whether organized or not (cant vouch for it) is great though and produces competent and successful nurses. has for yrs.
the main campus is in prairie view,tx off hwy 290. Pre-nursing, as well as other majors are here, but for nursing clinicals the campus is in houston, as well in one or two other locations i believe. The custody form is from the background check right? We go to harris county, ask for the background check-certified copy, and get it handed to us once its been processed...correct me if im wrong
everyone: i just wanna say thanks to everyone on here for joining my post! it really has helped me through this process! also, i am attending the transfer day on the 18th! from experience some staff members are not as nice as the other staff members of other nursing school's i applied to, but they seem as if they will become nicer once they get to know you! i actually got accepted into baylor and houston baptist but i have chosen to attend pv b/c of all the nurses i know that express how well trained and prepared they were and still are. also, b/c i've always heard positive things about pv.. well, the only bad thing ive heard is just the fact that its hard and other insignificant stuff.. but every program will be hard and have it flaws! & every program in texas is fairly great! i see it as a blessing:heartbeat b/c there are over hundreds of ppl who would love to take my place,so i will work my hardest each and every day!
knalimol or anyone else who would like to comment :):
1.) what would you recommend us to do to prepare for the course load, school in general, studying, etc.?
2.) would you recommend commuting from home or staying near campus?
3.) are there any "hook-ups" on books, like cheaper places?
4.) can you give a description on how your schedule for school and clinicals generate?
5.) what advice can you deliver to us for our first semester approaching??
Congratulations on everyone who got accepted to the CON.I'm a semester 1 student, which means it wasn't long ago when i was in your position :-D
It's nice to see/hear/read (lol) of y'alls excitement. Even after taking summer school and almost rounding out the semester my excitement level is still pretty high considering how different the program is which is a good thing.
Let me know if y'all have any questions.
Once again congrats. Can't wait to see ya'll.
Thank you for writing on this thread knalimol, we sure will appreciate you advice, and info..
Could you please tell me how does the schedule works? At what time classes usually start and end.. How many days a week do you attend school, and what about clinical do you have the option to choose the site, perhaps close to your home? How are the instructors so far? )
Thank you!!
wow so many questions. i hope i answer all of them.
let me start by say you should enjoy your time off now. cuz come january it will be a different ball game. if you have shots to take or cpr training make sure all that is complete. hang out with friends and family lol.
as for preparing ahead, come to the transfer day and meet your professors/teachers/fellow students.
i have a great study group and we all met @ transfer day.
accomodation: i moved close to school (5 mins away) which is a good thing for me. especially days i have clinicals and i have to be at the hospital @ 6:45am. but there are people who commute from home and still make it. it all boils down to how you manage your time.
hook up on books: people in semester's ahead of you. if you have friends here borrow their books. i got all my books from friends which saved me a lot of money. (these books are expensive)
my schedule: i have classes on monday's and thursdays and clinicals tuesday. but thats only because i took health assessment in the summer. i do however come to con everyday. wednesday's to study with my study group and friday i attend another section for patho. (hearing the information twice reallys helps a lot) and on weekends, i'm here working on careplans and studying. basically i live @ con.
advice: don't understimate this program. there are people who are failing classes (
classes start at different times. i have a 8:00am class and a 9:00am class. they run between 3-4 hours
you do have the option to choose where you want to go to for clinicals. however its a first come first serve thing.
for semester 1 the hospitals avaliable are: methodist and kindred (med center) memorial herman northwest, select specialtiy in the heights.
i like most of my instructors...lol but it's subjective.
when you get in you'll be able to pick your fav's.
hope this helps. let me know if you have anymore questions.
knalimol: thanks a lot!!! you've answered all of my questions! if you know any people who will be taking the classes that we're supposed to take in the spring can you ask them if they are willing ot sell their books? i know the classes vary.
for those of you who are concerned about financial aid, i just spoke with one of the staff members and she said, "you will not find out about your financial aid rewards until you are enrolled"! hopefully that helps!

knalimol: are there any books for the first semester that you reccommend we should rent? did u need to use the books access codes/cds for any of the classes, for assignments or mandatory work?
i assume you didnt need the access codes because u borrowed books from those ahead of you right?
Blackberrie281
There are some books that have additional materials online which require an access code but its not manditory. Its only if you want to read further in the class.
For the most part everything you'll need will be in the book.
Angel1990
You're welcome
I'm sure people will want to sell their books. When you get here you will see all sorts of flyers for the books.
But not all books will be avaliable to you through other students because they might need it as a reference for classes in all semester.

Hey Blackberrie281
What can i say about my semester? Well its very different than pre-reqs i'll tell you that much. I took health assessment in the summer which means i'm only taking basics (fundamentals) and Patho. This means i have a break between tests.
But there are people who are taking all 3 classes at the same time which means a test every week but they are making it.
Health assessment in the summer was easy. Just a lot of reading but the reading was interesting. However i've heard people complain about it this fall.
Patho was what i feared would give me a lot of problems but surprisingly i'm doing great in the class.
Basics is for lack of a better word basic. Do the readings and you will be fine
Since you will be taking all 3 classes my advice would be not to sleep on any class. Divide your time appropriately between each classes.
The teachers are extremely helpful. They really want you to succeed. ALL OF THEM.
Also the students are nice too.
My favorite part of this semester is clinicals. IT TOTALLY ROCKS!!!!
Since i've been here, i can say that the program is organized. And very diverse.
Let me know if you have any more questions.
