I work in ICU & one of my patients is a very nice woman
in her early '60s. It's becoming a little unnerving for me to
do patient care for her because even though she is as nice
as can be, she is psychic and tells me things regarding my
life that NO ONE else could possibly know.
When I'm in her room, I don't ask her anything, she just
begins telling me things about my past & present which
are totally accurate!
She's told me I'm picking a different future for myself by
resisting a change that I'm deliberately avoiding. (Which
happens to be TRUE.)
When she asked me why was I resisting, I told her that
I'm happy with my decision. She grinned & said, "Ok honey,
we all have choices to make; that's what life here on Earth
is all about, there's many a fork down the road."
When I mentioned her psychic abilities to some of my
co-workers, they told me, "Ask her for predictions about
your future or get some winning lottery numbers from her."
They're laughing it off as a big joke I guess, & they think
I've gone delusional, for she doesn't talk in a psychic sense
to anyone else that enters her room.
I like this patient, but feel very freaked out when I'm around
her. I'm a religious person and don't know quite how to take
all of this.
Please tell me I'm not alone...has anyone else encountered
a psychic patient?

Well, this is true for me also, so maybe she meant you a pass this message on to me!
Let me speak to you:
At times you are extroverted, affable, social, while at other times you are introverted, wary and reserved. You have found it unwise to be too frank in revealing yourself to others. You prefer a certain amount of change and variety, and become dissatisfied when hemmed in by restrictions and limitations. Disciplined and controlled on the outside, you tend to be worrisome and insecure on the inside. While you have some personality weaknesses, you are generally able to compensate for them. You have a great deal of unused capacity, which you have not turned to your advantage. You have a tendency to be critical of yourself. You have a strong need for other people to like you and for them to admire you.

I have yet to deal with a patient that is truely "mine" as I am still in school. And, it would freak me out to have some one tell the they have a special gift. There must be a reason that she is telling you this. I would ask her why-maybe there is something she wants you to know, or consider when making your decision. t never hurts to ask...and if you are uncomfortable with her, um..."sharing" with you, let her know. I'm sure she would be obliged to discontinue discussions realting to your personal life. ( I understand the whole reason for not wanting to know things because of your religous beliefs).
Good luck! How truely interesting.

There's a lot to be said about preserving the boundaries between you and a patient, psychic or not. I have only had a couple of patients who got very personal with me, and I didn't care for it at all.
I stopped it with a variety of techniques. I told one that I was uncomfortable with that topic, and would they mind if we talked about something else? Anotehr one I just told that I needed to take care of my other patients, since the first try (above) didn't work. Others I have just ignored or asked them a question related to their condition or care.
If you are uncomfortable with her psychic predictions, you can ask her to stop, or make light of it with her, or change the subject or ignore it. You don't HAVE to be bothered by it. (Doesn't sound like you got much support from the other nurses--maybe the best "gift" this patient is giving you is some hints about where you set your boundaries with your coworkers?
Good luck! And may the force be with you....

Simply tell her that you are not comfortable with her predictions. I would really love to have her as a patient, she sounds interesting.

I guess it would really all come down to where you stand on the entire subject. You say you are religious but does that mean you do or don't believe in spirits? I personally feel that we do not just die and everything ends. I believe we have a soul or spirit or consciousness that continues on as a kind of energy. I believe also that just as some people can do quantum mathematics this being their specialty others can communicate with the "spirit world" I don't believe she could give you the lottery numbers but perhaps a loved one of yours could encourage her to attempt to help you make a tough decision easier by possibly hinting that is the right decision. I also would very much enjoy this patient. If you don't want to know anything just tell you prefer not to be told anything else I believe she would stop. Make conversation that might interest her ask about John Edward and if she believes he is authentic. Then ask is she thinks that what he is doing is good or bad etc. (John Edward psychic medium with a TV show Crossing Over)N E way sje is just like any other patient in that you will have to assist her with her needs and be polite and caring, just tell her if you are uncomfortable with the predictions.

This is a bit off topic but this thread reminded me of my grandmother's hospital stay.
I was just a kid and grandma was hospitalized in New York City. They had her hands tied because she kept trying to remove the tubes. She was trying to talk and we finally figured out she was telling us and the nurses that the building was going to collapse. We all calmed her down and attributed it to the drugs they had put her on.
Later that night, there was an earthquake in New York City. I remember walking into the hospital and the nurses and dr.s all looking at us in amazement, and asking us if my grandma was psychic.
Grandma passed away a few days later, but I think she is one patient those nurses will always remember.

I would feel honored to care for a patient such as this one.
But, as is the case with anything, let the lady know politley where you stand and she should relent.
Also, I would love to hear more about what she predicted.

I've witnessed schizophrenics nail people and read them like a comic book meaning, touching them right where they 'hurt' in a matter of seconds.... maybe they see things we don't after all, and i don't mean visual hallucinations... hahaha

Texagain,
Your reply was the one I would have given.
Now why is your reply being ignored? I will answer not for your benefit, as I believe you already know, but for those who are ignoring or missing it. They want to believe and as long as they want to belive they will not get your message.
Thanks, Agnus.
You are entirely correct.

Well, I'm not a nurse (yet), so I haven't encountered any patients .... but the Grandmother of one of my closest friends claims to be psychic.
Actually, last weekend I was over there - their dogs had gotten out of the pen and were lost somewhere in the woods - they had been searching for them for 3 or 4 days. My friend finally calls her Grandma and asks is she has any advice re: finding the dogs. Grandma asks if there are any traps set somewhere, that the dog is in a trap. Friend says no, not that she knows of. Less than an hour later, a strange man pulls up in the driveway and asks if this is the family with the missing dog. Turns out he had just found a dog caught in a steel trap at the hunting club that borders on my friends' property.
Oh, by the way... this friend of mine lives in Mississippi, while her Grandma lives in Arizona!
Gives me chills!
