Are there opportunities for travel nursing within the psychiatric specialty?

Mary Jo, can you send me a private message?

Thanks :)

Mary Jo,

I've worked with Supplemental for years and am currently on assignment with them in upstate NY. I did Worldwide in NC. Hated the NC Psych system. I've worked at Beth Israel in NYC (originally from NYC) and the test was mostly med-surg. If it's the same one I took that is. Had nothing to do with psych. They did have this other test which I'm sure I did poorly on because it was all about medical situations. Whatever the case it was a waste of time since I never even found out if I passed or not. The one you really have to worry about is the med test. Anyway let me know how you make out!

Hmm, why would they give the med surg test to psychiatric travelers? Also how may you prepare for med test? Can you use a calculator?

BTW.. I have been to 3 of the NC state facilities.... Wow! I COULD write a book! Defintely hasnt been my cup o tea!

Hi, All. I've been lurking. Interesting comment about NC. Does anyone have any thoughts/opinions about which states have the best facilities...?

I am currently in the NC State run system. Boy are they screwed up here. I am trying to decide whether to extend. I hear stories from regular employees here and they all seem to think that the facility is not capable of (or willing to) supporting their staff. I don't know what I am doing here. Everyone is miserable and I can't seem to meet anyone that I have anything in common with.

Hi everyone!

Well I am here at B.I. in NYC and working evening shift. The girls are very nice to me as well as the manangement. I have gotten breaks for the first time in years thanks to the influence of a Union. Not that I am all gung ho on Unions, but when i was down in NC the acted like they were doing you a favor if you wanted a break. That attitude was in every hospital i was at. My last travel assignment in NC I just LOVED! The nurses and manager were GREAT! I am truly going to miss them.

However yes, I agree with you... the Mental Health System in NC is less than desirable. There are multiple issues going on and its like a snow ball.

I have posted here in regards to this issue but here goes again:

DOES ANYONE KNOW OF ANY TWELVE HOUR DAY SHIFTS IN PSYCHIATRY ANYWHERE NORTHEAST????

i AM JUST NOT AN 8 HOUR SHIFT GRRL AND I HAVE NEVER DOWN 8 HR EVENINGS. Not that I am not grateful for a nice job assignment but just want to put it out there to the universe.

Ya know?

I work at St. Luke's in Psychiatry and we are on 12 hour shifts. They just switched over in March. It's great!

Oh Micky-B!!!!

Girl, there are so many now!!! I am a seasoned nurse of 34 years. 15 in med-surg fields and 15+ in psych. Just pick your location... :typingGoogle: "psych travel nursing" and watch your computer listing explode! Fill out all the applications you can find on line. Some even have you do their testing on line! Be prepared for ton's of calls as this is major travel seaon right now. You can take pets, husbands and children now.

I did my first travel position in Hawaii for 4 months. :onbch:Came back with experience in parasailing, sailing, skydiving and a host of Hawaiian family/ friends to stay in contact with.

Something about the baby boomer situation being global not just the great USA. Except unlike the USA the global retirement age is about 55 so the world is losing the largest volume of nursing about now especially Canada, Austrailia... God Bless!!!

Oh great, I'll have to look into that. Do any of the agencies offer good family insurance?

I'm considering taking a psych job in NC through either Supplemental or Worldwide. Even after reading the comments from nurses who have experienced it I am willing to give it a shot. Gonna talk to some recruiters more in depth tomorrow and will hopefully be able to work out a good deal.

Let me tell you about 2 of the facilities in NC. The one in Butner, Central Regional, is in so much trouble all the time, can't get accreditation and seems to attract scandal. The one in Raleigh, Dorothea Dix has their act together, but you only get one full weekend a month off. Your recruiter probably won't tell you this. Otherwise, the work is not hard at all, as long as you are on a male unit. The female units are not my cup of tea and I got assurances that I would be on a male unit and the shift I would have, before agreeing to go there. I don't think the recruiters will be up front with you, even the good ones. But that is just my opinion after dealing with three travel companies.

I'm a psych nurse in NC right now, and there are DEFINITELY problems. It will probably start to get better soon, however, because the state is getting more interested in finding and funding mid-level programs (ie 7-10 days inpatient with outpatient follow-up). I think the big thing in NC is how easy it is to get someone committed!
