Hi! Thanks for reading this! So right now I am a student in an accelerated nursing program and I decided to quit my job as a medical technologist because it is just too much. I was working midnights and never had time to get any sleep. I quit right before some vacation time I had, and a week and a half after I submitted my notice my boss sent me a text message to let me know that I cannot use vacation time as my termination notice (which makes sense, I just figured she would let me know sooner). So I am wondering if I don't work two more weeks at the hospital lab, will it affect my chances of future nursing jobs? I don't plan on staying in this area in the future, I only moved here for school. Is anyone in nursing administration that can tell me if my jobs before I became a nurse matter or not for getting my first job? I'm not sure I want to spend the first two weeks of my next semester working since I am taking 21 credits and I know I am bound to be overwhelmed. Any advice is VERY appreciated. Thank you!!

Hey All! I started nursing school 5 weeks ago and we are already having our final exams next week for Health Assessment and Professional Role of the Nurse. This will be our 4th and final test and most of our grade is based on this. On the past 6 tests (3 for each class) I have done quite well, getting between a 90-92 on all of them (only frustrating because at my school that is considered a B+). Anyway, I was wondering if any of you have any advice on studying for the cumulative final? There will be SOME new material on it, but for the most part it will be cumulative. I don't want to get too in depth, but I know I need to review some things and am not sure how to go about it. Any advice would be VERY appreciated, thank yoU!!

I didn't get into nursing because I had narcolepsy, undiagnosed. So once I graduated college and found out, I couldn't stop thinking about becoming a nurse. Working in the hospital and not being able to be a nurse is the worst. All the other techs I work with couldn't imagine becoming nurses, which is funny because that's all I want to do. The lab is fun and everything but I really want patient contact.

I guess that's not what I mean. Earning an MSN just seems like it would be easier to do now that you don't have to go to campus, so it's available to more people. Which is a good thing. I guess I am asking about job competition because it seems like there are a lot of MSN-FNP programs available that will be turning out a lot of graduates, so I am worried about the saturation of the job market. I'm not saying that anyone with a BSN can just go do it and I know it takes a lot of work, I am just saying that now with online programs it will be more accessible to people. I don't mean to belittle such an advanced degree.

Is it more difficult to get into some specialties rather and others? I always thought I would love to work in Labor and Delivery and eventually become a Women's Health NP or work in ER. I know those are both very different, but those are where my mind tends to take me haha

You can change the repayment time, it will just obviously cause you to pay more over the life of your loan. 10 years is standard, but you can make it 20 or 30 years if you choose so that the payments are lower but then you are stuck in it for that long. So there are a lot of upsides and downsides. I just don't understand why education is so expensive. How am I supposed to get ahead with 35,000 in debt, 23 bucks an hour as a lab tech with no upward ladder, and a 6.5% interest rate? Even on my federal loans the interest rate is like 4%. It's crazy.

My boyfriend is an ER physician and does not want me to become an NP. I think it's a little crazy and judgement all of him to not think NP would do just as good of a job

So I am a medical technologist right now and I have $35,000 in student loan debt. I am planning on going to an Accelerated BSN program that will run me about another $45,000 in debt. Nursing was my original major but I changed it because I didn't get in the program. I like my current job, but can't shake the feeling that I want to be a nurse. Is a BSN worth getting into that much debt for? Will I be able to make enough money to pay it off before I die?

Do the online programs require clinicals as well? I am a really good online learner and I think I would do better with an online program, but I'm not sure how it would be received by prospective employers.

I think it depends on what else is going on in your life --- only you know what you can handle. You can always try it for awhile and then quit if it becomes too much, depending on what the job is. I plan on working part time during my ABSN program, doing a midnight shift so it doesn't get in the way of clinicals. It's really up to you, but I think if you have the confidence and you think you can do it, you should go for it!

How did you guys choose what type of nursing you wanted to go into? Did you figure it out while you were in nursing school, or did you just specialize in whatever you took your first job in? Is it difficult landing a first job as a nurse? I have so many questions!!!

What do you guys think of online NP programs? Do you think they are well received by employers?

My Narcolepsy is now under control, which is why I am trying again. I hadn't been diagnosed when I first applied to nursing school at 19, so I had no idea why I was SO tired and foggy all the time. I changed my major to Clinical Laboratory Science and still graduated. Now I am being treated for Narcolepsy and am feeling like I can finally take this on. I work in a blood bank and am around nurses all the time and I can't shake the feeling that I am supposed to be one. I go up to the floor to draw blood even though I don't have to, just so I can get patient contact. I like working in the lab, but I know nursing is what I was meant to do. I have now been given the ability to get through such a rigorous program, something that Narcolepsy took away from me. I hope to eventually become a nurse practitioner and specialize in neurology or sleep medicine and help people like myself who have Narcolepsy because a lot of health care providers don't understand it, which is why it is such an underdiagnosed disorder.

Are any of you guys worried about how easy it is to get an online MSN with an FNP concentration and how that will affect future jobs? I have heard several docs say they don't trust NP's nearly as much as they trust PA's, they just have more respect for PA's for some reason. What do you guys think? Any experience in this topic? Very curious.

Hey, Those of you out there who have gone through an Accelerated/2nd Degree BSN program: How did you get loans and what are the best places to go through? I heard that it's impossible or very difficult to get FAFSA loans or any type of government loan, so I realize I will probably have to do private loans. Any advice?

Okay so my original college major was nursing. I changed it to Clinical Laboratory Science because I didn't get into the nursing program. I then graduated and now work in a blood bank at a hospital lab. The problem is I really wish I worked with patients and stuck with my dream in the first place. I was diagnosed with narcolepsy after I graduated and realized that was the reason for my low GPA. I just couldn't stay awake during my classes and graduated with a 2.9. It's not horrible but it's not great. Anyone have any advice on what ABSN programs to apply to or what to do to help my GPA? Thanks!
