  1. hey, get out of LTC. It is backbreaking work, understaffed, and unprofessional. I used to work as an aide in LTC and hated it. I would never go back. Work at a hospital, much better and more help. Lighter work in my opinion. It will also inspire you to go back to school. Most CNA/STNA in hospitals are in nursing school such as myself. There is so much advice to go around. Nurses offer advice on NCLEX and you are guaranteed a job after graduation. You might even meet a nice resident :-) , SORRY, speaking for myself haha.
  2. I am so sick and tired of America and their stupid politics and war on drugs. I am considering moving to Canada or going into home health or case management so that I will not have to worry about this on a random basis. Drug testing is a violation of privacy ! If I want to go to Jamaica with my husband and smoke then that is MY business. I should not have to have my career on the line because a crackhead RN is diverting drugs and the entire unit has to be tested. Cocaine and other dugs have half lives that go away in about 2-3 days, if that. Yet someone who occasionally smokes has to wait 30 days. It is not fair. There needs to be a testing system that can tell if drugs are in the system at the time of a workplace accident. I have never been to work impaired and I don't plan to as a nurse. What I do on my off days is not my employers business !!!! Also people know your rights, you can not be watched unless it is court ordered or you are on probation. You also have a right to know what reason the "suspicion" to test falls under. It is a violation of your 4th amendment constitutional right ! The government can never get rid of cannabis. I agree, tax it, sell it, and move on ! If drug diverting is such an issue then how about employers test for THOSE substances. The last time I checked marijuana was not in the pyxis.
  3. That is some straight BS!!!! That is discrimination. I am sorry this happened to you. It does not make any sense to me. I hope you find a new job.
  4. I have 9 weeks left. I seriously am dragging my feet at this point. I do the minimum on my assignments and I procrastinate. My last class is critical care and I am halfway done with Practicum (L&D). I cannot wait until this is over. I am going through a break up and I am tired of being broke.I know NCLEX is the next step but as long as I am finished with school I will be HAPPY.I am so beat up and sick of studying. I am fortunate to already have a job as a tech at a hospital(although I want to move to NC from Ohio;my hospital is extremely physician driven), but I can't take this anymore. Please some words of encouragement. Please !
  5. If you can't take it, then quit. This is very unfair and nursing jobs are too plentiful to deal with that crap(despite what people say on here about finding a job. If you have 7 interviews that sounds plentiful to me) . Honestly I would omit it, if that place is that bad then you don't even want them on your resume. Your new employer will most likely ask why did you leave, and you don't want to go into a entire story about that. They might ask about any gaps in employment, but 4 months isn't that long. You will think of something. Omit it, and take it as a lesson learned. I am sorry you had to deal with that. LONG TERM CARE SUCKS. Thats why I am never going back.
  6. Congrats ! So happy for you. I am so sorry about your dad and brother, stay strong! I am going to take your advice for studying. I graduate in december. Congrats again !!!
  7. Awww how wonderful, you are so sweet and seem like you have a great heart. Yes i agree that prayerful is most powerful. That is what helped me through nursing school in the first place. I am happy you did not give up and stayed positive. Congrats. Congrats. Congrats. You deserve it. Mrs RN ;-) Please pray for me, I graduate this December and hope to take NCLEX by Feb or March !
  8. Okay so Peds yes, maternity (OB) No. At least for my school anyway, our class instructor made her exams very straight forward in OB. Anyway for Peds I bought one of those color coated flashcard books from walgreens and I filled it out front to back with important notes. Such as different types of vaccines (MMR, Varicella, Tdap) and age at administration (at least 12 months old for MMR) etc; Took it almost everywhere I went. That was very helpful. I had a hard time in Peds because children were never "my thing" I guess you could say. I was not very interested in it. I ended up barely passing with a 75%. On the other hand I loved OB and passed with a 89%. I'm hoping I can do my practicum in L&D or PP this fall. Best of luck !! You will be fine.
  9. I am not sure. I am in the same boat. He says he is planning to pop the question soon and he wants a baby very badly ! I am 21 and he is 23, well I really want to wait until I am married but I would not mind if we were engaged. I am going into my last semester this September and I graduate in December with my BSN. Basically, we are not trying for a baby, but we are not avoiding either, so there is always a chance. If so, I will only be 3-4 months walking across the stage ! Only issue is that I want to start working as an RN asap, so I am not sure how willing employers will be to hire somebody 7 months pregnant. It's in God's will. I wish you all the best.
  10. I am starting the last semester of my BSN August 31st, I can not wait to be free ! lol I am nervous about where I will be doing my practicum and just getting through critical care. I am about ready to start saving for my boards and I've been bugging the hell out of my boyfriend for a Kaplan review book. Because of doing summer clinicals I haven't been working.Im ready to finsh already ! Good luck to all. :-D
  11. Yea group projects suck ! Most of the time everyone does their part because everybody wants to pass, there may be 1-2 people who slack off but that is inevitable. I get pretty into it though and it turns out okay. In the beginning im like ugh, but the arts and crafts part makes me feel like a kid again, and I like being creative. Easy points ! Everything will be fine. As long as your group follows the rubric and gets it done.
  12. Go for it !! It is nobody's business. Don't ever let something like this stop you. I believe in you. You will have tougher things to worry about as you get through the program. Go for it ! Your sexual orientation is not a road block, it is who you are.
  13. That is a lot to take on. I think you should focus on one of the sciences at a time. Since these are the classes nursing programs generally look at. I took 18 credit hours as a freshman pre- nursing major back in 2011, and only had a 3.0 so maybe I am speaking for myself. It took a 3.5 for me to get in my BSN program. It would have been higher if I focused on certain classes and took fewer at a time. I think you should drop either Chem or Microbio and take the other one the following semester, so you can get A's in both. You want to do well in all classes so don't overwhelm yourself. It is not a race, and also there is nothing wrong with being 100% dedicated to school. I worked throughout my entire program different STNA/side jobs and it was rough, it surely affected my grades. Just stay focused, it will pay off. Good luck !
  14. Congrats ! I'm so proud of you girlie ! I have one more semester to go in my BSN program. I am going to buy kapan this fall and study for about 1 hour a week until time draws closer. Then I will bump it up to 5 hours a week etc. I do not want to overthink it. I feel that is where many people go wrong. Is there a specific website where I can buy it? I'm only using Kaplan as well.
  15. Yes !! All the time. He is my best support system besides other nursing students. The worst is when I get frustrated with him on exam days. I yell at him and say "you don't understand !" Then after I pass I feel so bad but he knows the routine haha. He has been there since the days of Chemistry and Microbiology. Im graduating in 4 more months and I have no clue how I would have made it without him. I graduate the day before his birthday so we're going to Vegas! (I've never been there). Time to celebrate after 5 years of hard work
  16. Thank You! Yes I have to take one step at a time. If I don't I will go crazy.
  17. Yes I really need to start looking. I have always heard good things about Saunders and Kaplan. In my school they have an optional NCLEX review course. I am not going to take it because I cant afford the extra credit hours. I think I will do fine with 1 or 2 review books. Hopefully I also hope you get the unit of your choice !!
  18. I have 4 months and 3 weeks left. I'm over it.
  19. Yes I felt that way before. I was rejected from one nursing program and did not even bother applying to another. The BSN program I am in now rejected me at first, and this was after 2 years of pre reqs (I transferred so it took longer).I was devastated. Then I received an email 2 days before school started with an open seat and now I am one semester away from being done. So there is a bit of light. I have went through break ups, have lost family members along the way, and have also struggled with bills. I couldn't work as much to keep up with my studies and it was so stressful. You have to remember honey that YOU DO NOT QUIT, no matter how much you want to give up. People always told me it was harder to finish than it was to get in and this is absolutely true! You will have many more days when you are in the program and want to quit. Please Please keep trying and let this motivate you. You can do it! The desire to be a nurse was placed in your heart for a reason.
  20. Yes you can have a social life if you manage your time correctly! I am in a sorority and I also work at a hospital and I have been able to manage. There will be times when you will feel like crap because all of you friends are out having a good time and you are in studying or writing a care plan for clinical the next morning. I have felt like this and so many nurses tell me that it will be worth it. Your freshman year may not be so bad. As a pre-nursing major I found it hard initially to buckle down with so much freedom, and only maintained a 3.0 but I was taking 18 credit hours, so I managed but as time got closer to apply I had to get serious. You will be fine honey, and all your friends and the communication majors will praise you for your dedication . Think about it like this, while others are still looking for a job you will pretty much be set. Especially if you are employed as a CNA/STNA and get in good with the nurse managers. The grass is not always greener. Some students will look up to you and wish they were in your shoes. Appreciate that :-)
  21. Hello ! I am a BSN student and I gradate in December. I am beyond excited and it has been a very long road. I am only 22 but I have been rejected from a program before and have struggled with so much trying to make it though, as I am sure we all have.I am blessed to have my mom and boyfriend that have helped me along the way. Anyway does anyone have any advice for me about how long I should study before I take the NCLEX? Any advice for practicum? I signed up for L&D and I hope I get it ! I am seriously ready to break down because it is only July but December seems soooo far away ! It has been 4.5 years for me and I am just ready to finish!! Is anyone else graduating soon and feeling the same way? Please and Thank You
  22. Hello, I am in my 3rd semster of my BSN program and I am only halfway through. I am so depressed and I am feeling like I will never see the end of this. I am having so many financial hardships and it is ridiculous. I am always stressed and very tired. I also am struggling with my classes. My dream is to work as a floor nurse for about 3-4 years and go back for NP, but that will never happen if I do not get my grades up!! My motivation is really low and I am just feeling like I want to give up everyday but I have made it too far. Has anybody else felt like this when in nursing school? I am over this and I live in Ohio so the cold weather makes life even more difficult. I know in our profession we see very sick poeple everyday and I know life can be worse. I am grateful to have made it this far in this program but I needed to rant and something to lift my spirits. Thanks !
  23. If your so upset then go get a BSN. You are ignorant and know good and well nobody takes gym classes at a University. Im also pretty sure everyone has to take Psych. Its more than a few electives. Try leadership and assessment and critical thinking/Theory. Some of its bs and some is actually useful. Everyone should want a better education =money power respect. In a nutshell. Im a STNA in school for my BSN then DNP. Its not a race, do what you have to do and follow your dreams
  24. I am a BSN student and I have been a STNA since 2011. One thing I can say is that you need to stand up for yourself!! I know it is hard but you can't let people, especially coworkers treat you any kind of way. That makes the job hard. Now in this field time is of the essence and I understand why your coworkers may be a little upset about getting behind but that is no reason to run to management multiple times. You will learn that you will not have time to do everything by the book and that is frustrating because you want to give the best patient care. I also know that certain places can be pretty click-ish but you have to do your job and ignore it. If management is not understanding then quit, with your certification you can always easily find another job. It will get better as you get more experience and you will be more efficient and learn tricks to working around that stuff and time management and setting a routine which will be easy because in a nursing home you will know what times residents go to bed etc. So my best advice is to stand up for yourself girl ! You will get more respect and if you don't people will try to get over on you for example by constantly putting you on the hardest units, bossing you around etc. In nursing you have to be a tough cookie !
