Why aren't new grads getting hired?
You know thats a really good way to look at things. I wonder how many nurses are supporting their families like that, probably numerable people.

Why aren't new grads getting hired?
Yeah sorry about that. I feel better knowing the real reasons now, because as a new grad I dont know and thats the whole problem. I never consider that I lost a position to an experience nurse, never. I am the worst overachiever because I was made to be that way. I think if I dont get the job its because I made a horrible mistake, I said the wrong thing and I should have known, I didnt say something when I should have, or anything you could think to blame yourself for. Anyway, its always my fault to me. It all stems from there, I cant put it all in words. It caused me to look at the NM's.

Why aren't new grads getting hired?
Good information, I think I am going to offer up in the interview that if someone gives me a chance, I will not abandon them as that was what one NM was talking about to me. I love the ICU, but the CSU more. So, I love your kind of nursing so I might have future questions. I have got the 5 year question, and I am so nervous about that question. I usually say that I plan to get my BSN online because most places want you to have it, and I say I want to be at a point where I am doing a good to great job at what I do. I do not like to skip around jobs, I am the overachiever of the overachievers.....I want to do the same thing until I do it to the absolute best of my ability....Maybe these are the things I need to say whether I am asked from now on or not. I tend to only answer what I am asked, and I offer up nothing extra because I am always worried I made some mistake. What is your advice about the five year question? Is what I said okay, but I know some advise to not bring up school because it looks like your out for that tuition help thing. I just want them to know that I know I need to get my BSN. Thanks for the info.

Why aren't new grads getting hired?
I dont think the older generation is pushing us out either, I just want to believe its some reason that is easily fixable? Plus, I think I am just equating interview, open position, NM's within the same age range, so I want to blame the NM. I know I have come so close to some positions, I know I have but I know in the end that experience was just the smarter way to go. I think i am going to get the phone books for all the surrounding counties by me, and go to every medical place I can find and fill out application until my car breaks down and I cant drive anymore. So, many people are becoming nurses for all the wrong reasons. I really really love doing what a nurse does. Long story, but my life didnt provide many oppurtunities for me to feel good about myself. I never felt such a rewarding (happy, i cant explain feeling) as I did reducing another person's suffering. Its like its my source of happiness, and I would not want to do anything else. I guess I just have to give my all, like I do to everything else. I will do whatever it takes.

Why aren't new grads getting hired?
i see its making sense to me now. darn it for making sense. i know eventually they will have to start hiring new grads again, its impossible not to but how many of us will there be at that point. i am trying to figure out what is best for me to do. i am so frustrated because in any other area i have worked i was able to prove myself and that is all it ever took, but i cannot prove myself or i do not know how to prove myself in an interview.
-
Why aren't new grads getting hired?
Yeah, I see what you mean. Even if I am the fastest learner; which I am it doesn't hold a candle to a nurse with experience. The one NM who interviewed me said I hired so-so and she was in training for half a day, and then I added her to schedule. I thought well, that sure won't be me and thats what she was looking for. I wish there was a new grad prove yourself something, because if I could just have the chance to prove myself. I know I would win, against new grads that is!

Why aren't new grads getting hired?
I do not want to get into really personal stuff here, but this means freedom for myself and my children. I basically put it all on the line and promised my kids a better life, and despite it all the girl who didnt want a job at all but went to nursing school as a backup incase anything happened to her husbands job (no need for money or anything) got the job during internship. I had to face the fact that it doesnt matter if you do the right thing everytime (which really sucks at times), honest no matter what, give your everything to something.........Life just doesn't follow those standards; which I really thought and believed in. Some of the people with in's into the nursing field failed pharm class and got a free pass through, while I spent my whole summer with a pharm book to get the only A, have jobs but I do not. My freedom, my safety, my kids safety, and most of all our happiness depends on me getting a job and here I am. No one even cares about GPA, scholarships, volunteer work, all of the things that I thought would make someone see I am going to give my everything to this. My life depends on a job too. I try to stay optimistic because I have fought against life my whole life and this is the first time I feel utterly defeated, it doesnt matter what I do, I am never going to change anything or succeed. I guess finally coming to the understanding that doing whats right, honesty, and hard work means nothing and the world is not just got to me. I'm trapped in hell and a job would set me free, but no matter what I do it seems like its never going to ever happen. There is no justice.

Why aren't new grads getting hired?
I see why a manager would hire experienced over new grad too, no question there. I just don't see why they would leave a position unfilled just to not hire a new grad. I know many nurses that jumped ship and go on like you said, hospitals are probably sick of it for sure. When you say the market is oversaturated........your saying there are plainly just to darn many of us right? I couldn't bare to bring that to light? Plus, more and more and more and more keep coming. I just talked to a girl who is starting nursing school for an ADN (I have to) and I tried to warn and say dont do it, but she said I wont have that problem??? Really, I am the top of my class and that doesn't mean anything but that I got more interviews but not hired. Plus, at some point the nurses that are there have to protect their field is my thought to be honest. If they let in too many new grads and the field is over populated, there goes wages, etc. I think that is a valid concern and contributes to it all.

Why aren't new grads getting hired?
You know I have heard that too. BTW, you seem to know about almost everything. I should just ask you specifically 1st. How not funny it would be for that to have been made up because the cost of nursing school now will unequivicably (did I spell right) ruin a life if they do not get a job. I was going to sign up for BSN (I only have ADN) because everyone says must have BSN, but afraid to go deeper in debt and even with a BSN I am still just a new grad? Were did the whole shortage thing come from 1st, some nursing school? I have wondered that for a long time. I see the thing with the babyboomers and all, but what happens after the babyboomers???

Why aren't new grads getting hired?
Okay, I thought I wanted a logical answer. I lied, that sucks. Plus, there is all this jumping ship going on. Thats insane it costs that much to train a new grad, an experienced nurse can just come in and do the job without training? I assumed that they would all need the same training coming from different places or fields?

OK, so I am whining but....
Me, and hundreds maybe thousands of new nurses will take that position you hate so much off your hands for you without a second thought. No one can get a job right now, be glad for the paycheck seriously. Some of us are in such bad places we are losing everything in life and you want to talk about depression and disappointment. I went to nursing school and kept optimistic and full of hope because I am in an extremely abusive marriage. It took everything I had to get through nursing school; which I had no help with and 3 kids and no money. I had to get scholarships to pay for my books. I promised my kids we would leave, I did what I had to do and made it. Top of my class even. My kids have lost hope of ever getting out, and Christmas won't exist this year for them. I am still trapped with no signs of ever escaping the hell I live in. I did all of it for nothing. Be thankful because I wish with all my being I was you.

Why aren't new grads getting hired?
Why with hundreds of unfilled positions is no one hiring new grads. What is the logical reason behind this? Is there a logical reason? Has this ever happened in the history of nursing before? I feel like I am not apart of the nursing community, I feel as if I am viewed as lesser and treated in conjunction with that stereotype. I feel like we are being alienated and black balled. None of us can start our careers if we can't get a chance from anyone, and if we are the future it seems not so smart to make us all offended and scorned because at some point we are going to be needed. If there is no new grads coming in, there are no future nurses being secured. We are all going to be indifferent to the hospitals that would not help us start our career, so when I get experience and in the future when those same hospitals have no nurses because they shunned a whole generation of nurses. Most of the new grads I know feel the same way.

Unemployed & inexperienced New RNs. Vent it out!
I have 3 kids too, passed boards in June too, and Christmas is coming for me too. I feel like I ruined my families future. I have extreme debt now. I pray to, for you, me, and the rest of us being black balled. The positions are there, they just won't give us a chance. WHY??? I cannot find anyone who will provide me with a decent answer why?
-
Unemployed & inexperienced New RNs. Vent it out!
Umm, your story about covers my story and all the rest of us new grads out there. I think it rather dumb of all these hospitals to shun a whole generation of new nurses, who are they planning on turning to in the future? Not me buddy, not once I get my experience, not when they wouldn't give me a chance in hell. What happens when all the experienced nurses are gone, and we are the experienced nurses with one heck of a grudge? Plus, these nurse managers have the ability to hire me because the recruiters for the hospitals picked me. I hate to say it but when the shoes on the other foot, I am looking out for the nursing licenses that had to go through this horrible experience. Apparently, we are the only nurses that have ever been new grads before? Positions are there, they just won't consider us for reasons I cannot understand. Maybe the hospital CEO's need to be made aware that since they are shunning us now, don't come asking when you need us in the future because they WILL need us.

Going green makes me red in the face
I am a paper writer too. I cant imagine. I would bring in my own paper and transpose the information, sure it will take longer than printing but I could not work without my sheets? Lol, you made some funny comments.... I needed the laugh because I lack the green paper with dead presidents on it because I cant find a nursing job. It seems the going green thing can get way out of hand, it should be a choice not a requirement.

Asking for constructive criticism and persistance?
Thanks for the advice. Your right why am I sitting here worrying about that when it is SO hard to get a job. I don't mind where I will have to work because I know I am at the bottom of the food chain right now. Lol, about not killing someone on purpose! I am glad I am not supposed to feel confident. I call myself a fake RN because I have no experience. I call the nurses I know to confirm stuff I am 99.9% sure I know. Your right I should be focusing on getting something, anything not this other stuff. You make a lot of sense. I appreciate all your input really.

Asking for constructive criticism and persistance?
If that aint the truth!!!!!!! I wish they would prepare for reality in school rather than making everything seem so easy and simple with bad advice. GREAT POINT! I'll start there.

Discrimination, discrimination.. Tell me what you think.
Funny, I think the same thing happened to me and from the other new hires I can probably prove but whats the use. Mine was the nurse manager, she looked at me and decided. I know it. Funny also, I asked in another question about the constructive criticism thing. I see from your experience, it seems like something I should do for sure. Sure I think you could be totally right. Nursing seems so catty to me. I have heard that nurses do not like hiring other nurses that are good looking. I try to dull down my looks for interviews but its hard to do because I fear all kinds of judgment. I had an interview on a floor that every nurse had a european accent, and the supervisor was the same with the accent. Stupid skin color, come on already. We are preached to have equality, but every form I fill out that is important has the question caucasian (WHITE written next to it) What is white? Then African American (Black written next to it) What is black? I am not white, I am german with very dark features.....I am olive.

very general question...
I am a new nurse too. Sure we taught to do things a certain way in school and it all makes sense. I was taught what you were taught. Whose patient was it? Was the nurse you were working along side an experienced nurse with years of experience? If someone is doing something differently than I learned it, as they often do as experience provides wisdom, I ask them why they are doing it like that and seek their rationale instead of telling them my way and why my way is right. ESPECIALLY, if the other nurse is experienced. They tend to be correct more often than not. Im a new grad and we place pillows under heals. If PVD exists you would want to elevate to the level of the heart, I think which it seems like that might be what she was telling you. ALways try to understand the other person, and ask for the explanation. However, if you go in saying this should be like this because I was taught this for this rationale its going to offend. If your just looking to hear your view is right, your not asking the question for the right reasons?

Asking for constructive criticism and persistance?
I wish nursing school would be honest like this because all of the nurses at school and even my good friends that are nurses are telling me it is appropriate to ask for feedback? Im so confused what is right to do and what is not right to do? I mean they push it in school, ask what you did wrong and they will respect you for it because you are trying to grow as a person. Thanks for your input.

Asking for constructive criticism and persistance?
Good point. To be honest, for my hospital interviews, most have been rushed like that (not all though). Its nice to hear what real nurses have to say because I dont see the things that a real nurse sees. See as much sense as you make, I cant help but think in the back of my mind that I did something wrong, horribly wrong. I was in retail management prior to nursing, and I never interviewed for a position I didnt get. I think I have a unrealistic reality in regard to nursing and crossing into the professionalism aspect. Plus, I wonder if my lack of confidence shows. In retail, I knew it all back and forth and I was confident. In nursing, I know where my place is as a new grad and I do not feel confident at all.

Asking for constructive criticism and persistance?
Okay, I see your point. I always feel like I must have made some horrible mistake, I guess I am wired that way. I never consider that its just something out of my control that caused it. You could probably give me a lot of advice I need to take.

Thanks. I see your point about being busy, I know that nurse manager was overwhelmed. Did not think of that. Thanks for idea to go into HR, I will do that! I really do want to know. Thanks for your help. Very helpful!
