Is there in fact a nursing shortage? If so please tell me where. I know respite work is important ... but I'd feel more comfortable knowing if this is a truth ...
  2. Nurses

We need to realize as nurses that yes we have a difficult career. However, it's so very important to keep baggage outside of the hospital And outside of the home. There needs to be an outlet to help us with what we go through in saving lives and fo...
  3. Nurses

I understand venting. However I feel the need to say 'you're welcome,' because don't you just wonder which nurse executives are reading these posts. Peace, Joe
  4. Hospital orientation for CNA/Support staff

I just have an idea. It seems you are doing well but I have a suggestion. How about pairing CNA's with specific nurses based on rapport, etc. I think this will increase patient satisfaction by the care mini teams can give. -Joe
  5. The title says it all. At the time of writing this note, I've been a nurse for 7 years. I've done all types of nursing and this is where I find I've evolved to. New grads may be hired here but that's a gift. It's a gift because they bring true innoce...
  6. Med-Surg nursing, a place where Innocence and Expertise collide

When I typed 'collide' into the title I mean no harm. 'First do no harm,' in all things. However if conflict is the only option to keep patients safe, healthy, and en route to their wished health care outcome ... good. Without conflict (on occasion)...
  7. Why do Doctors think they are................God!!

Theologically, many people consider to be a part of God. Scientifically, doctors have great intelligence. The short visits mean the MD is working diligently (most of the time). Current US health care does not allow the time MD's need to take care of...
  8. Should I Maintain EMT-B with new RN?

Absolutely! Good work in getting EMT-B. I look at EMT's as 'healthcare officials, in the field.' You should be proud of that. -Joe P.S. Nursing will be much different as your career evolves. However, would you throw out your high school diploma? ...

  13. Will going agency now screw my resume/career forever?

I don't believe so if you find a good, respectful, agency in which you can grow professionally. At your assignments though you must be able to work at 100% every shift otherwise it's a bad situation. Good luck, -Joe

  16. what do you think?fired for a comment

I think there is more to the story, as well. At will employers can fire for almost any reason just as at will employees can resign for any reason. However, if it was a single isolated incident as you have described above that seems unlawful. Howeve...

Maybe you could step away from bedside nursing, but remember you can always go back? -Joe
  18. Need advice on nursing career

I'm a man, and a nurse. Many men are very well suited for this difficult, but rewarding profession. The only way you'll really know would be to take that first step. Did you feel a calling to the profession? If your friend called you, would you an...
  19. Should I become a nurse ?

Tell them there is a wide receiver on the Detroit Lions who is also a nurse. Also, no, I'm a man and I think it's an excellent career. It's just like any career where you get along with some, and not with others, but you carry on. My thought is that...

  25. med-surg..the "trailer trash" area of nursing??

Medical Surgical nursing is a specialty. There may be a great deal of new grads (p.s. thanks for going to nursing school), but this is a premium area for the best of the best. What better way to mentor the new nurses than to show them the way?
