  1. Hi all. I know many of you don't like giving medical advice here, but I'm in a lot of pain so I'm going to take my chances. A few weeks ago I stepped on a tiny piece of glass, about the size of a single sugar crystal. I tried everything I could thin...
  2. Tell me about your "brain" or "cheat sheet"

In the book "Training Wheels for Nurses," the author mentions "brains" or "cheat sheets" of experienced nurses. When I was in school, I always wondered how nurses managed to organize their shift and remember who got what meds or treatments when. Now ...
  3. Hospice vs. In-home. What's the difference?

Hi. I am an in-home LPN & have a question about hospice nursing. What care do hospice nurses provide that cannot be provided by an in-home nurse? The reason I am asking is that I currently have a client & am considering referring her to hospi...
  4. First aid supplies & meds checklist

Howdy all! Today I was offered a position as camp nurse at a science camp here in Missouri. I am so happy, excited, and yes, anxious! I will be the only nurse there (80 kids), and in the few days before the campers arrive, I want to make sure the hea...
  5. Camp nursing: where to find opportunities?

Hello all! I have just given 2 weeks notice at the LTC facility I work at. I was thinking that this would be a perfect time to try out summer camp nursing! It sounds so fun. Does anyone know where I can find these opportunities? I live in Missouri, b...
  6. Any tips for starting IVs?

Hi all. Tomorrow I am doing a clinical rotation with an IV therapist. I am scared to death because I've only started one IV - and that was on a very cooperative classmate! Does anyone have any tips/strategies that might help? I would appreciate any f...
  7. Can LPNs trim a diabetics toenails in MO?

I am almost positive that in school we were taught that a podiatrist must trim toenails of DM patients. However, at my new in-home care job, I have several clients who are monthly visits for nail care only. I'm uncomfortable doing it, as we didn't le...
  8. Can LPNs trim a diabetics toenails in MO?

Thanks for the reply. I will have to call 1st thing in the a.m. and see exactly what they expect in the way of "nail care," and express my concerns. On my very 1st assignment I had to trim fingernails and somehow managed to actually cut the client, ...
  9. summer volunteer??

You can most certainly contact the individual camps directly. I can only imagine that they would be thrilled to have you! Personally, I would try emailing first. This site would be a good place to start finding a camp that would be a good fit for yo...
  10. Some of you may recall me mentioning that I was pregnant and scheduled for C-section on June 23rd. Well, I visited the hospital for an NST on the 18th because I hadn't felt the baby move that morning, and I wanted reassurance. The nurses couldn't fin...
  11. Hi, all. It has been quite some time since I posted last! I just found out that I'm pregnant ! :w00t: I'm searching for a new OB. I'm considered "high-risk," so I need the best care possible! How can I find out about a particular doctor's reputation...
  12. How can I check out a doctor's reputation?

I think asking OB nurses is a fantastic idea. If only I knew some to ask! I've only worked LTC & summer camp so far. I'm thinking I may visit the L&D dept. of my preferred hospital and bug the nurses for a bit. They were all wonderful when I ...
  13. continence management

Our 3-11 nurse always gives suppositories and enemas at the very end of her shift so MY night staff has to deal with the aftermath. :angryfire
  14. That ain't my resident! I am dumbfounded...

:yeahthat: Unfortunately, the attitude the OP has described is the norm, not the exception, based on what I have personally seen. I have enough trouble getting the CNAs at my LTC to take care of their OWN residents. I can't even imagine the horror t...
  15. Please be nice to medical students

The CNAs I work with (lol!) call me "their nurse," too.
  16. Please be nice to medical students

I certainly didn't mean to offend you. I never considered that anyone would take that phrase personally. In fact, I have referred to my staff as "my CNAs." So now I will know to stop doing that! :)
  17. Please be nice to medical students

The entire original post just smacks of narcissism and a holier-than-thou attitude. "laid down the law" "put up with" "would've let this pass" And then the whole implication that med students are better than nursing students is the icing on the cake....
  18. To Do or Not to do???

Oh, and you should def. put your army stuff if you have room, esp. if it pertains to nursing at all. If you don't have room, just leave it off. But, make sure you mention it in your interview as many employers will see that as a good quality.
  19. To Do or Not to do???

This is all I put on mine: Personal info: name, address, ph#, email address. No SSN, license #, or d.o.b. Objective - one sentence Qualified by: this is where you'll describe your experiences as a CNA & LPN, your licenses, certs, skills, etc. I ...
  20. need your advice before I quit nursing?

Go up to the very top and click on forums. Then go down to "General Nursing Forums," and click. Next, click on the forum you would like to post your thread in, such as "General nursing discussion." Once you get inside the forum of your choice, there ...
  21. need your advice before I quit nursing?

No, that is not possible. If it were, no new grad would *ever* find a job, and we would all be stuck in the same position for our entire careers. The wonderful thing about nursing *is* all of the opportunities available to us in all kinds of differen...
  22. To Do or Not to do???

I personally do not put my license # on there. It never really occurred to me to do it. They shouldn't be doing a background check without meeting with you first, anyway. And how awful would it be for that resume to get into the wrong hands? They cou...
  23. need your advice before I quit nursing?

Why in the world would you quit nursing altogether after only trying one thing? Just think of all the time and effort, not to mention $$$, that you put into your schooling. There are tons of opportunities available for you that aren't as stressful as...
  24. How do you know?

:yeahthat: When I dread going in every, single day & am miserable the entire time I'm there, it's time to move on. I don't think you are to that point yet! Best of luck whatever you decide.
  25. LTC Orientation

As a brand new nurse, I was given 3 nights. Since I started at my facility, I have seen nurses come in with absolutely no orientation. Kind of scary, isn't it?
