  1. awesome nurse pt ratios

Was just talking to an aide today at clinical on the med/surg floor and the hospital just had a new company take over and they are making their lives hell she said. 1 aide per 10pts from now on (they do 12 hr shifts and might have to go to split 6 hr...
  2. I Think I am NOT Going to NS

My nursing school is an ADN program and we don't have a waitlist at al :) People come from all over the united states to our program. It's very clinically based as well. Don't give up your dream and settle for less. There is always more out there, yo...
  3. What do you do when you come across a...

Well that's kind of rude! That's great we have CONCERNED volunteers! Obviously OP is suspicious the nurse's breath smells like alcohol. Preventing something from happening before it possibly does is the only thing OP is trying to do. Overzealous is n...
  4. What do you do when you come across a...

Waiting until signs of intoxication show up might put patients at risk in the meantime.
  5. How can nurses avoid burnout?

Never would have thought of this! Good advice to know BEFORE starting work as an RN in a couple years!! :)
  6. 2nd degree in nursing WAS IT WORTH IT? GIRL LOST!

I can't really say much about the teaching but coming from being a patient myself in the hospital and being in clinical 2 days a week for 8 hours a day with sick patients, I wouldn't want a non passionate nurse. They are NOT fun to be around and can ...
  7. Sounds like a complete personal theory to me. Good job!
  8. Oh good. So since I will be graduating as an RN from an ADN program in Nov. 2011, I should just continue onto my BSN while awaiting the "explosion" of hiring within the next 5 years?...
  9. Charting

Just curious how you would chart someone who is blind? We are taught in nursing school how to assess PERRLA and how to chart it but what if someone is blind? Can you just chart "pt is blind" ?
  10. Are A's really not practical in nursing school?

I think A's are completely practical. I'm a straight A student myself. I have no kids though and I do work part time. One thing that is having me struggle through mental health nursing this term is the fact that it's far less interesting than this we...
  11. Clinicals make me feel like an imposter

I too am experiencing the same thing as you! It has got to be normal I would think. I am in an ADN program that is clinically based. Clinicals 6:30-2:30 every single Monday and Tuesday. I'm pretty sure I will get over it, by the end of the RN program...
  12. Charting

Good point! I wasn't even thinking that we would still assess their PERRLA knowing they were blind. It always comes back to "chart what you see" which would mean that you would still assess it.
  13. Fluids, Electolytes and Acid Base

aha! I thought you meant it was good advice, but not for this topic and I was going to say ummmm....
  14. Fluids, Electolytes and Acid Base

    irrespective of the topic?
  15. To All Student Nurses

    geesh! way to be nursist!
  16. Fluids, Electolytes and Acid Base

My advice to you is to not just memorize the sx of each but rather understand it For instance: hypocalcemia causes muscle spasms, twitches, and tremors.... well why does it cause those?? calcium relaxes the muscles -- so if you are low in calcium you...
  17. Do you feel these are patient safety issues?

I have a 40 year old lady in my program and clinical group who was in prison for drugs and was a meth addict and had her 3 kids taken away by the state and adopted out. She has turned over a completely new leaf and was worried she wouldn't pass the b...
  18. Students are cut-throat!

Oh, and to make a little more sense, I forgot to mention that it is a term based school... not a semester based school. So, 4 terms a year/3months for each class and we never have class on Fridays. M-Th school all the time. :) Needless to say, it's v...
  19. Students are cut-throat!

It's a 2 year all year round program with the pre-reqs built into it. You can start right when you graduate high school. 2 years, summer included and you're an RN
  20. Students are cut-throat!

My class of about 150 (down to 100 after Med Surg 1) doesn't have much cattiness or back stabbing going on. We all really help one another out and talk about everything together in the halls between classes and such. You go to lunch one day with one ...
  21. When ill equipped students affect your grade...

Okay well I'm done here. I find it a bit rediculous how dramatic you are with everything that is said. --No you shouldn't have got docked 5% of your grade but in the meantime, stop complaining about it and actually do something about it, but in the ...
  22. When ill equipped students affect your grade...

Sounds to me like you are the one that is not doing what needs to be done to stop the favoritism, if you will, that is occurring with the CI and this student. In the meantime, until someone (who doesn't seem likely to be you) does something about it ...
  23. When ill equipped students affect your grade...

Really?! Never was it mentioned to spend all day/every minute with the student. Blown way out of proportion here! It's completely obvious that you only posted the OP to get people to agree with everything that you are saying. You keep adding more and...
  24. When ill equipped students affect your grade...

If you KNOW they are incompetent why wouldn't you JUMP on the job to help them? Since you know that you are competent yourself, why wouldn't you want the reassurance that the patient would be much safer with you there?!?! Patient is number ONE prior...
  25. Pregnant and New Job

It's your own decision to tell them or not. You don't have to tell them if you don't want to, and you shouldn't feel compelled. I wouldn't tell them until you tell everyone else when you hit the 2nd trimester. Congrats!!
