  1. Sounds like you might want to brush up on assessment skills, gain more experience and also understand the unintended negative consequences associated with the use of technology. Neither people or machines are perfect. The saying is intended to remind...
  2. Health care administration - non nurses

While I'm sure your personal experiences are important, not everyone will have the same experiences with being managed by someone in or outside their field. I believe that in many cases, nurses MUST supervise nurses, so I am talking about Management,...
  3. Recently, I've read several articles in healthcare industry publications related to sleep deprivation and the unsafe conditions faced by medical students and residents, and how their work is negatively impacted as well as their personal lifestyles. M...
  4. Thanks for the information. What I meant about not seeing information about the topic is that in the publications I've seen (management, patient safety, risk management, health care industry in general) most of the discussion on safety about sleep ha...
  5. Health care administration - non nurses

How can you manage nurses if you don't have more than a superficial knowledge of what their job entails? The same way people without management skills (nurses without management education) can manage business entities, like hospital departments: by l...
  6. Health care administration - non nurses

Great points. My son in law recently graduated from MBA school and is in a corporate leadership program with a major health care company. I am about to graduate with an MHA and I have 30+ years experience in the industry as an RN. Each of us will bri...
  7. Health care administration - non nurses

I am with you, RiskManager. In my experience, more and more administrative positions are being filled with nurses, but that historically has not been so. I think the essential thing here is putting people with the right perspective into positions of ...
  8. Nursing Student with Learning Disability

I echo supportive comments re: getting diagnosed for appropriate accommodations. When I graduated from a diploma program in 1981, I wanted to earn a BSN degree, but was petrified of having to take algebra and/or statistics. I never did well in junior...
  9. The Nursing Licensing Cartel

Actually, I was first licensed in Illinois in 1981, before NCLEX, and I did NOT have to retake board exams to get licensed in Texas in 1983. We had reciprocity between states (varying) at that time, too.
  10. The Nursing Licensing Cartel

"Well I believe in getting paid for what I have accomplished, and that is not a privilege, it is what is due. Those who hire us are privileged to have us work work them."Wow. Just wow. Ever have to prove yourself before? If not, get ready for it. T...
  11. As a fellow nurse over 50 who has gone back to school twice now, starting at age 49, I agree that it is a great thing to do if you really do plan to use the degree. I was a diploma grad from the 70s who managed to get into several positions usually r...
  12. The Nursing Licensing Cartel

Unethical and likely illegal? It is called states rights, pure and simple.
  13. The Nursing Licensing Cartel

Well, you could look at it this way: The cartel charges a hefty price in order to weed out those who got into the profession for the wrong reasons...Maybe the requirements should be even more strict if verifying license and non-criminal background bo...
  14. A Paradigm Shift in Nursing Practice

You know, readers decide in the first few sentences whether or not they will continue to read a post. This is what I was trying to say - I did not go further due to the errors in the beginning. The "hook" was not there for me. Professionals need to k...
  15. A Paradigm Shift in Nursing Practice

Actually, trying to understand how to read the intent of the post. Just being honest here. Really.
  16. A Paradigm Shift in Nursing Practice

Sorry, but the grammatical errors made it difficult to follow this post. If you want to elevate the nursing profession, please be sure your thoughts are well expressed.
  17. UT Arlington RN-BSN spring 2010

Is anyone registered for the UT Arlington online RN-BSN spring 2010 program? Or already enrolled from last semester? If so, how do you like it?
  18. HCA Hospital

Aw, don't let other people's perceptions worry you. You could have a perfectly lovely experience there! You might get a great position with a leader who has a terrific attitude - one who hasn't been scorned by newcomers in powerful positions:cool:.
  19. The Case Against Breastfeeding

I agree completely that whatever decision a woman and her family make about BF should be honored. My real message was that the author seemed angry that her experience wasn't scientifically backed up, as though there had to be hard science that made B...
  20. HCA Hospital

Sounds like someone knows "tricks" to being successful as a professional. Be quiet for 3 months? Don't offer suggestions? Having a hard time understanding how this makes a facility "a awesome" place to work. A better idea is to find a place where you...
  21. UT Arlington RN-BSN spring 2010

Good luck with your first course. Keep me posted on how it is going, and weather you are glad you made that decision. I'm looking forward to getting started soon after you.
  22. HCA Hospital

Recent new management with resulting high turnover from what I've heard.
  23. ? re unlabeled meds

I would offer to report anyone who suggested you take meds from home and use them without verification to their respective licensing board. Of course, you would have to have proof, and that would be difficult to get. I agree it sounds fishy.
  24. As an RN who feels forced into finally obtaining a BSN, due to the lack of jobs in my area, I would say, get the BSN asap. No two ways about it. Don't even think about stopping with an ADN. I always wanted to continue my education, but there were alw...
  25. Career suicide?

After many years experience and several employers, my advice is this: Do whatever is in your best interest at all times. This may mean staying in your position until you must leave for a good reason, or it may mean staying there for 30 years. The bot...
