  1. I am not an ER nurse but I do assist ER nurses when they fill out PRF (Professional Responsibility Forms) for such things as workload and safety (pt. & nurse) problems. Can anyone tell me - * what is the "normal" nurse to pt. ratio in the ER? *wh...
  2. Has anyone heard of the term, "campus of care"? I believe it is in reference to seniors? If so...what does it look like, what are the skill mix, nurse to pt. ratio, what kind of care would be involved? Many thanks
  3. has anyone heard of the term", "campus of care"?

Many thanks to all who have replied and help clear the confusion with re: to the definition of "campus of care". :)
  4. ER nurse/pt. ratio,triage times, & EHS pt. responsibility?

At our hospital - Peace Arch Hospital in White Rock, B.C., Canada...we cannot "close" beds...they say that we have a "duty to care"...they just keep pouring in the door...irregardless of staffing issues or in-house availability to accomodate them. It...
  5. asking for help to purchase Boys Town shirt

I am asking if there is anyone located in the Omaha area that could help me obtain a Boys Town sweat shirt? I would need a man's XXL (prefer red or dark green in colour if possible). I will pay US cash via a snail mail address & pay for any posta...
  6. asking for help to purchase Boys Town shirt

Hi there :) ! Thank you "so much" for all your hard work to track this down! :kiss It has helped a great deal! I see they have a phone number for Canada - so will try that & it will probably help save at least on shipment costs. Thank you aga...
  7. As opposed to "maggot" hospitals :imbar ...I am asking if anyone knows if there are any true "magnet" hospitals out there? Thanks!
  8. "where" are the "magnet hospitals PLEASE?

Your ratio's, opportunity for education and advancement would certainly be good incentive to "stay"! Good for YOU! And thanks for letting me know these things actually do exist!
  9. "where" are the "magnet hospitals PLEASE?

Thanks for the info. - it's so "encouraging" to hear that there is "hope" for the positive out there! And I agree...working for someone that actually listens to you and takes affirmative action because of your input must be incredibly rewarding! Cong...
  10. Funny experiences in nursing?

I was just wondering if anyone had some funny :rotfl: stories/experiences to tell with re: to nursing? We had an elderly fellow with dementia - who was ornery by nature...was making his way down the hallway slowly by pulling himself along the rail. ...
  11. Nurses leaving in droves...

I agree - these are "horrible" ratio's...as to whether or not it's legal...I guess that will be ironed out when someone dies unnecessarily. The nurse works with one nurse aide at night and if it goes into this contingency - they bring one extra nurse...
  12. Nurses leaving in droves...

This is in extended care - one nurse to 50 patients (day and evening shifts with the "contingency plan") and one nurse to 100 patients (with the contingency plan on the night shift)
  13. Nurses leaving in droves...

We lost one whole ECU (67 beds) and gained a manager (go figure). There is 1 RN for 25 pts. on the D & E shifts in our ECU & 1 RN to 50 @ N. The management/admin. are now looking at deleting the RN's & replacing them with "full-scope" LPN...
  14. "where" are the "magnet hospitals PLEASE?

So...magnet status is really just a bunch of political rhetoric? No extra concerted efforts to recruit, retain, involve staff, educate staff, increased staff for workloads and so forth?
  15. ER nurse/pt. ratio,triage times, & EHS pt. responsibility?

Thank you everyone for your help! The more I read of what is "normal"...the more "abnormal" I am feeling we are in our ER dept. I am going to make some notes & take them to our nurses to help give them some idea of what's going on elsewhere! I d...
  16. ER nurse/pt. ratio,triage times, & EHS pt. responsibility?

Thank you to ALL of you who have so kindly responded. "Diversion" is now a thing of the past d/t "gridlock" everywhere on the Lower Mainland (where I live), and "patient overrride". The nurse in the back - on top of triaging those who come in by foot...
  17. Nurses leaving in droves...

Hi Equity, I'm not sure where you are located? Our LPN's (in British Columbia, Canada) have been mandated by this government to become "full-scope" by the end of this year. If the LPN's do not become full-scope, they cannot practice so there's little...
  18. Nurses leaving in droves...

undefinedundefinedgetting "out" of nursing is something i have been seriously considering for the past two years. i have been nursing for 12 years. it's not the "nursing" aspect that i so desire to leave (as that is a true love & no doubt kept me...
  19. See: http://www.nursingadvocacy.org/news/2003oct10_er.html and take action on: October 9 "ER" sets a new world record for harmful inaccuracies & distortions about nursing. Inaccuracy No. 1. The big staffing problem for nurses today is that hospi...
  20. destructive, grossly inaccurate messages about nursing

Thank you to everyone for their responses. I just wanted to tell you something "positive" that has occured due to 55 (and counting) letters that have been written to the "ER" producers and that is: they have retracted their language "demoted to nurse...
  21. destructive, grossly inaccurate messages about nursing

"ER" is bad for the nursing profession because they make such a point of using accurate dx, lab tests & medical jargon that the public may think that they take the same care when they portray which professionals carry out what roles. In addition,...
  22. destructive, grossly inaccurate messages about nursing

And how do you make "positive change" besides injecting a little "reality" into what "real" nurses do/are? Perhaps then, "Hollywood"/the public would take us seriously enough to make all the improvements you have mentioned. And I do not seriously thi...
  23. destructive, grossly inaccurate messages about nursing

Hi Tink, Well the "FICTION" may become our worse "SCIENCE FICTION" in that the public do not always know what exactly it is a nurse is or does, their value, education, skills, autonomy, etc. And by portraying nurses as having no say, hating their job...
  24. destructive, grossly inaccurate messages about nursing

Hi Gwenith, According to the nrsg. advocacy website, they did start off with "honey" :kiss by opening a dialog with "ER" 2 yrs. ago. The Centre had apparently put together a coalition of the Dean & a number of professors from John Hopkins Univers...
  25. scary "contingency" plans

In our one ECU the management sometimes resort to a "contingency plan" when they cannot (or say they can't) replace an RN. On a day or eve. shift - that means one RN may have to look after 50 patients (and these pts have "racks" of meds.) & at n...
