Here are some of the reasons why Hep B vaccines are started in newborns: 1. The Center for Disease Control recommends it as well as the American Academy of Pediatrics. That is good enough for me. 2. Pediatricians don't want children falling by the wa...

I was engaged, though not married during my time through nursing school. I have to say- It is what you make of it. My significant other was in Medical school three hours away, I was taking 17 hours of classes plus working 24+ hours a week for money. ...
I'm counting on you guys! I need some cute, fun stuff such as lists, cartoons concerning mental health humor and even better- NURSING mental health humor. I teach clinicals in an ADN program and I would like to get together some little humorous hando...
I became a full-time and successful PNP at the age of 24! Some of my first pts would tease me saying things like, "You don't look old enough to be out of high school!" (which is true- I still get carded for ETOH and even some rated R movies!). Howeve...
I also hate the phrases "Physician Extender" and "Mid-Level Providers." It makes us sound sub-professional. As far as complaining about it.. I don't. I don't correct other MD's for calling me this, but anytime I can, I refer to myself as a "Primary...

Milk of Magnesia is GREAT! You can double or even triple the dose. I usually recommend one dose a day for three days (weekend when you aer going to be home is best), then after cleaned out, use Mirilax to get good bowel schedule going. Good luck! Try...

Just wanted you to know about pay scales in nearby areas. I am a peds nurse at a peds hospital in Cincinnati. Starting pay here for a new grad is 18.00. Shift diffs for evenings/night is 4 dollars/hour. I've been here for two years and am currently m...

THanks for the idea of a staff meeting. Actually have that planned. I'm going to do inservices on all shifts so the night people won't have to come in extra. Hopefully that will help me get some bonus points with some of them.

Ooops! I didn't mean "better peds nurses" in that way! (see, this is what I mean- inadvertantly saying something that can be misconstrued). I'm trying to help them feel more comfortable taking care of the moderately ill child. Staff is used to pt's ...

The state laws are changing. The grandfathering in of NP's is now gone. In Ohio to practice an NP MUST have a masters degree in nursing by a specific date. The policy of which you speak may not be the hospital's policy, but that of the state.
I applied to four grad schools (Wright State in Dayton, OH, University of Cincinnati in Cincinnati, Ohio, Ohio State in Columbus, OH, and University of Ky in Lexington KY.) I was accepted at all of these schools before I had even finished my BSN prog...
I guess I'm a little sensitive about this subject since my husband is an MD and since I'm an advanced practice nurse, people sometimes allude to the idea that the reason I became a nurse was to "score" a doctor for a husband (we actually dated in col...

I am in PNP school. Definately go through nursing school before you decide. I'm going to grad school full time. I graduated in 2002 with BSN and will graduate in Spring of 2004 with MSN and be eligible to become a certified PNP. Hope that helps.

Why is attachment a bad thing? I care very much for many of my patients because they are in and out of the hospital so often. I think being attached makes you a better nurse as you are more in-tune to the patient. Yes, there have been some children w...
