  1. A couple of tips and such to help: Dress Code: Change into OR scrubs first thing when you get there, AFTER letting the charge nurse know who are, what school you're with, and such. This includes a long sleeved jacket. It's cold in there, you'll need...

    ChloraPrep Allergies?

Recently (appx. 3 months ago), one of our orthopod groups decided to switch to ChloraPrep for all of their Duraprep-prep cases, after reading an article on its effectiveness. But they're noticing that most of the pts. coming back for their post-op vi...

    Speech Class Interruptions (rant)

Took a speech class, since every once in awhile, i have to do presentations on new equipment and supplies for orthopedics, and i figured that this class might give me pointers. First day of class, we're given the assignment to do a 15 minute verbal '...

    Bouffant Surgical Caps

I'm looking for websites that sell the bouffant surgical caps. I did a search on Yahoo and came up with several sites, but the majority have no variety in patterns or colors. Was wondering if anyone had any other sites they like or know of that sells...
  6. Anyone ever seen, know, or heard of any adults that have petit mal seizures?

do you prefer long or short surgeries?

Depends on why the case is long. If the surgeon drags his rear/doesn't know what they're doing (we're blessed to have one of those), then i'm wishing for a day of fast cases.
  8. Do you wash them on the delicate cycle in the washer? (and avoid the dryer) I'm getting tired of handwashing these things.

    Surgical reprocessing

Part of our CPD training is OR observation, and another week-long observation once a year as an 'inservice.' It never fails, that at least one time within the week, there's an incident where the indicator strip is missing, instruments are 'lost', et...

    OR Pet peeves

That kickbucket got kicked to the other side of my table. Aside from the risk of injury, i don't like someone stepping between me and my table to dig for sponges. I can see the buket just fine from the other side of the table, and keep my feet out ...

    longest surgery?

Sounds like someone we used to have here that did those. Sick as it sounds, his fem-pops were called fem-pop-chops because RARELY was the pt. NOT oming back for an amputation, despite the hours of surgery.

    Overwhelming job! Oh my gosh!

12 weeks is nowhere near an appropriate length for orientation.

    LPN v ST v RN

Depends on the facility. Some place will hire new grads, others want prior med-surg experience.

I stopped getting that when i replied with either "well, people in hell want ice water, also" or "well, grab a mop, and get to cleaning, this room doesn't clean by itself." I've also used this one "i'm going to PEE sometime today, and right now is a...

    Break room and refrigerators

Fridge gets cleaned at 10 pm, you either have your stuff out or it's gone. Sounds strict, but the fridge situation got ridiculous, and came down to this.

    Is it me?

The way we train people is to give them the same preceptor as often as possible throughout their training. We've seen that this helps in training because 1) the preceptors have years of experience, years of problem solving, etc. 2) it helps form ...

What's the easiest job in the operating room?

I'd never say that any job is easy in the OR, the OR is not where the easy jobs are.

    Timeout univercal protocol

Let's not forget the foghorn voice used to shut ppl up so they will listen to the Time-Out (my beginning line, which JC liked, is "Ladies and Gentlemen, i WILL have your attention NOW because this is our official Time-Out, our pt.'s name is.............

What are some of the names you've heard pts. name their babies that you liked? (I'll add my own later, i need to check on the spelling of two of them)
  23. A couple of tips and such to help: Dress Code: Give some serious thought into what attire you will wear into that dept. if you're allowed to wear something other than your clinical outfit on your OR day. I wouldn't have even thought to mention this,...

    OR Pet peeves

I usually say "Your colleuges get paged to death, maybe one of them has a solution, ask 'em". The only one that we have who does that (yeah we're missing out average quota i'm sure lol) is fresh out of school and whines about being on call. Uh, the...
