  1. Psychiatric Travel Nursing??

Let me tell you about 2 of the facilities in NC. The one in Butner, Central Regional, is in so much trouble all the time, can't get accreditation and seems to attract scandal. The one in Raleigh, Dorothea Dix has their act together, but you only get ...
  2. Hello Psych Nurses & Future Psych Nurses, Please Read

I strongly suggest that you do the med-surg thing first. As well as reinforcing what you learned in school, you learn something that is invaluable to a nurse in any setting. ORGANIZATION skills. All of the things you listed about med-surg basically ...
  3. Agencies that do lots of contracts in NC (RTP area)

If you are an experienced psych nurse, then I can recommend Dorothea Dix, the crisis stabilization unit is very organized and well staffed, most of the time. I just can't recommend WWTS to you. I am very pleased with Supplemental. Your recruiter can ...
  4. Agencies that do lots of contracts in NC (RTP area)

WWTS treated me very bad. So I am not going to recommend them to anyone.
  5. Agencies that do lots of contracts in NC (RTP area)

The state of NC is hiring travellers like crazy if you are willing to work psych. They have a medical unit if you don't want to be on the front lines on a ward. Supplemental is the only company that is working folks in psych, I believe.
  6. Psychiatric Travel Nursing??

I am currently in the NC State run system. Boy are they screwed up here. I am trying to decide whether to extend. I hear stories from regular employees here and they all seem to think that the facility is not capable of (or willing to) supporting th...
  7. Psych Travel Nursing

I just took a position at the new Central Regional in Butner, NC. It has been with some misgivings that I took it after reading stuff on the internet about the state of psych treatment in NC. You all aren't making me excited to be going!
  8. How many patients per RN/LPN?

Wow. I thought my place was bad. I think we have it sweet here! I work for a state psych hospital on one of the 2 adult acute wards. We can have up to 40 patients but usually our census hovers at 23-25. We are staffed according to patient observation...
  9. Psychiatric Nursing Differences?!

I have no idea why a psych assessment would have lungs/abd sounds. When our patients are admitted, they are seen by an NP, who does the head to toe assessment. We still do narrative charting in my dinosaur of a hospital, and unless there is a medical...
  10. After reading the threads about staffing ratios and the shortage, I thought it would be fun to create our own hospital....done the right way! What would Perfect Medical Center be like? In my world.... In Perfect Hospital, there would be an RN to do t...
  11. Making everyone work weekends, that being Fri, Sat, and Sun, would be nice. Then fix it so we don't have to work every other, but maybe every third weekend, or even once a month. I have been to too many hospitals that give some folks really sweet sch...
  12. PAs would compare closer to a Nurse Practicianer than to a Registered Nurse with a BSN or ADN. Scope of practice for them is normally the doctor's office, but I have worked in EDs where both PAs and NPs are considered "physician extenders" and see pa...
  13. Artificial feeding-Terri Schiavo

According to the report filed by the guardian who was appointed by Gov Jeb Bush back in 02 or 03, Terri and her husband were trying to have a baby, and that doesn't sound like estrangement to me.
  14. Artificial feeding-Terri Schiavo

Tweety, because this is now a circus in the worst possible way, and because so many question the veracity of her dx, I guess it would be a way of presenting current information to the world. Maybe because I have a deep-seated desire to please everyon...
  15. I had a talk with one of the case managers, QC/QA/QI (whatever) person and she told me that the next thing will be to do away with the term DNR and start calling it AND, Allow Natural Death. The rationale is that families as well as patients react ne...
  16. Artificial feeding-Terri Schiavo

I can't go thru all these posts, so I need to ask, has it been mentioned yet that an MRI is out of the question with a stimulator in her brain? I don't know how feasible it is to remove the thing, either. If I were King Solomon (Just call me Queen Sc...
  17. I understand that nurses who took care of Terri Schaivo in the past are now going on some talk show circuits. Is this ethical for us as nurses to do this? Is the license of the nurse in jeapardy for doing this by FL law? Does HIPAA cover this that yo...
  18. I am pretty sure they didn't have a consent form, as Michael is her legal guardian. If they went thru the proper chain of command and the allegations were investigated by the police, and not found to be what they thought were needle marks, then the ...
  19. aha, there were reports of 3 nurses filing affadavits, but the truth will bear out....2 CNAs were lumped by the media as being nurses. Now I know why no license is in jeopardy.
  20. middle TN

Nice to see other TN nurses here! I work in Carthage. Tiny tiny hospital. I went to the Cumberland University nursing program!! Class of '98 here. Vandy is a great hospital, but as an ER nurse in a rural area, I have to say I don't like the attitude ...
  21. I just wondered if the state of Florida has anything in it's nurse practice acts about this situation with regard to speaking to the press. The court of appeals has ruled to not reinsert the g-tube. I read the report filed by Jay Wolfson and while I...
  22. Working while sick!

Wow! I thought most places used Paid Time Off hours instead of separate sick/vacation hours. PTO is great and there still is a small cache of sick time for extended illness. Why do we nurses come down so hard on other nurses for illnesses? While our ...
  23. Working while sick!

I'm so sorry you are sick and are having to work. Almost every nurse I know has been put in this position at one time or another and in my personal experience, it creates resentment. Too bad you can't just call in, say you are sick, thank you very mu...
  24. Why do so many nurses seem to dislike working in Med/Surg

I look at med-surg as the place where there are too many patients who don't need to be in the hospital in the first place, but are on some sort of break from home, expecting to be waited on hand and foot. Then the nursing home patients who are sent t...
  25. Nursing Journal of Jocularity

Are there archived editions of the JNJ around somewhere? I used to subscribe to it too and would love a good laugh.
