  1. Squirting your co-worker with NS flush is amusing on a slow night. Having said co-worker shoot KY jelly more than 10 feet into your thick, curly, long hair is not as much fun.
  2. Does this schedule exist for an LPN?

When I was in school, I worked Fri 10p-6a, sat 2p-6a, sun 2p-6a, then school m-f 0745-1445. I was a single parent of 2 toddlers, and was only able to keep up that pace for a semester. Where I work, the weekend nurses work the baylor program. They wor...
  3. Best one sentence handoff report

SSDD... on a LTC pt that is never happy w/ anyone or anything
  4. ? on drawing PT/INR

Ooooh, I have never seen that machine before. Ours are still being sent out to the lab. Would be awesome to just do ourselves.
  5. Albumin Reaction

I'm a little confused. She developed the reaction shortly after the drip was started. So that means she hadn't received the lasix yet, right???
  6. how many shifts in a row?

I used to work 7p-7a 6 days on, 8 days off. I was younger then and I loved it. Think it would kill me now
  7. That Feeling

It's been three days, and I still cannot keep the smile off of my face. I was recently switched shifts and stations at work (working day shift on a LTC unit, whereas I was the night nurse on a rehab unit). I've been on this unit for 2 weeks now, and ...
  8. Is that my med error?

You noted the order, you transcribed it correctly on the MARs, you started the first of the additional 3 IV doses, and the other nurse missed the next dose. No, it is not your error.
  9. Reapply a Fentanyl Patch?

If it were me, I would've reapplied it by securing it w/ either a tegaderm or an opsite.
  10. Do you interrupt report to give pain meds?

I too am one of those nurses that medicate before shift change, and let the pts know that shift change will be happening at such and such times. I do not interrupt report to medicate. To me, it's no different than if I was in a room w/ another pt, th...
  11. Nursing shifts: Is this fact or fiction?

My facility works 8hr shifts, Mon-Fri for 6-2 and 2-10, and 10-6 (what I work) is 4 on 2 off (comes out to getting a Sat/Sun off every 6 weeks). It really sucks. Because of the way my schedule fell, when it's my weekend off, that's my short payday (6...
  12. Do you do venipunctures as a nurse?

I graduated from my LVN program in 02 and part of our cirriculum was IV therapy, and we had to be IV certified to graduate. I have worked places with and without IV teams and labs. I currently work in a skilled rehab setting, and I start LOTS of IVs ...
  13. We had a wonderful co-worker code on us last night. She's in the hospital still unresponsive and on a vent. I've had other coworkers who have passed (both expected and not), but never one where it happened right in front of us and who we worked so ha...
  14. How to cope when it's one of your own

Thank you so much for your reply.
  15. Holy Abscess! Not for the faint of heart

Does it make me look bad that I had to share this with all my nurse friends???
  16. Compact States: 1 is enough?

Not sure about the other states, I'm only speaking for Texas as this is what I encountered. When I moved to Texas and applied for reciprocity, I was given a regular license because I was not considered a resident of Texas nor did I come from a compac...
  17. Call Bell Requests

    "I don't remember why I called"
  18. Nurse Week Goodies, funniest ones you've seen

One year they held a raffle, giving away different items. I won a very nice bottle of wine. Asked them if I could drink it while at work. Never did get an answer for that.
  19. Rash from hand sanitizer?

yeah, that one for the lotion. type in gold bond ultimate sanitizer, it's the 3rd and 4th one on the list. i'm not good at posting links. I'm allergic to latex, and never fails that I come in contact with it in some form, and the lotion is the only o...
  20. Rash from hand sanitizer?

I can't use the alcohol based hand sanitizers because they are very irritating to my hands. I found that Gold Bond makes a hand sanitizer/lotion combo that I LOVE, and it doesn't have alcohol in it.
  21. Our facility, we do have a resident's room that does have a camera in it. The family was allowed to place it after staff had been notified, and there is a sign outside the door stating that the room is being monitored.
  22. do you always monitor BP b/f giving HTN medications

I work in a skilled rehab unit, and I also pull some shifts on our LTC side. We have paramaters on everyone that is on BP meds, and yes, the BP is taken every time. Because they wouldn't check it every time at home and this is their home now, or you ...
  23. Advice and tips needed- New to LTC & mid-night shift

Wow, there's so much to cover on that. 1. Work load wise, how many pts are you going to be responsible for? There aren't that many meds scheduled through the first half of the shift generally. Mostly prns. If your facility does your thyroid meds ear...
  24. Full-time weekend shifts - LPN

Some hospitals and LTC facilities utilize a Baylor program. Work 16hrs Sat and Sun but get paid for 40. If you miss a shift on the weekend, you don't get the whole 40hrs. Know lots of nurses that work this.
  25. Who is working tonight?

10p-6a here, and we get paid straight time. If we want "holiday pay", we have to use PTO hours. I work in a rehab/ltc setting, so it's change of the month for us. Joy (sarcasm very much implied)
