I am new to nursing but I don't want to do this anymore
You need to hand in there. The first year is the hardest. You will find your groove. Its not a good freeling to quit at something you worked so hard for.

Discharging by Wheelchair
Yup thats why if they ambulate well I let them leave without a wheelchair. My exact rationale if it was ever questioned. Just make sure to document well.

When refusing to work is considered abandonment?
Do you have a way to fill out an incident report or unsafe staffing report? Ive been told you cannot refuse bc it IS abandonment but to just take the assignment but fill out an incident report to protect yourself if anything happens.

Accidental Pill Pusher
Saw this coming for 10 years now. Giving Dilaudid like candy to patients. Seeing a post op patient go from acute pain to drug dependence within days, watching the clock. Asking for meds before they are due and doctors giving into them bc pain is subjective right. Its terrible what this epidemic has become!

I just need some advice - or a hug. One or the other.
If you are feeling this way (which is pretty normal). I think most nurses feel this way somewhat at one time or another than I would suggest to transfer to a different unit and try to get day shift. Youve been on your unit for over 1 year so Im sure you would be able to apply to annew unit. As a new nurse Inwould jump around to different areas until you find what you like. And if then you still hate it then maybe consider new options as a new asuxh as leaving the hospital setting.

Pregnant & starting nursing school
I would stick with it!! Also talk to your school. Maybe you can start and take a semester off to have the baby. There was a girl in my class pregnant with triplets yes triplets! Im sure its tough but it can be done and it will be easier pregnant than starting from scratch with two little ones!

Driving after night shift is scary.
- What is the grossest thing that's happened to you???
Haha just wrote about a similar story- What is the grossest thing that's happened to you???
Physical therapist decided it was a smart idea to get a 250 pound hemiparitic stroke patient OOB to chair by herself even after i insisted on helping her. Well, patient started going down mid transfer so I jumped in put my leg under her behind for support and before I knew it had poop all over my favorite scrub pants. PT walked out of the room after we got her back in the chair with no apology and guess who was left to clean up the mess!- My parents don't want me to become nurse but I don't care anymore
So many things are wrong with your parents frame of mind. You are right, nursing starting salary is good depending on what state you work in. Nurses DO NOT Work for doctors in most instances. You work for the hospital, facility and you are a part of an interdisciplinary team that invloves doctors. Maybe your reasoning for feeling down and depressed is bc your parents put you down. Being a doctor is not all that its cracked up to be anymore. You must have a passion for it bc its alot of school, alot of student loans, long stressful hours and many times they dont get compensated well unless you go into specialties such as surgery, IR etc. I would say go for it and dont listen to what anyone has to say. Its your life and your hapiness.- IVEA - The Innovative Replacement for the IV Pole - NTI
This doesnt look practical at all and would never fit at the bedside!- Patient complaint-freaking out!
Did you ask what the complaint was about? I don't see why you wouldnt be able to get more info about it especially that you are suspended until they investigate. And how do they investigate without even asking your side ifvteh story. Seems very strange to me.- No longer enjoying my "dream" job.
You had a major life change( a baby) it's OK to feel this way. I've been in the field 10 years now and recently had a baby. My priorities have changed. I've put my career slightly to the side and that's Ok. You need to figure out what would suite your life best now. I would say the first thing is to try to get a Day position that maybe less stressful. I always say the best part of nursing is its versatility! You can always go back to L&D later in life.- Nurse parents which shift do you like better?
Been an acute care nurse for 10 years. Had my son last April. I also am Adult Gero NP certified. Ive been unable to really pursue my NP career since the birth of my son. Not to say its not doable but Ive decided that with a baby I prefer my 12 H shifts 3 days a week. It gives me time to be with my son but also work and feel like I am not missing out on him growing up. Also if you are a new grad RN going into floor nursing for a few years can only help your career and experience. I would do it if your feeling this way! They grow so fast you dont want to regret it down the road.- Irony regarding cellphone use at work
Sometimes I look up things on my phone, use the calculator etc. The doctors are on their phone 24/7 and no one has a problem with it. I feel in the nursing proffession we are treated like children instead of professionals. If you see someone is excessively on their phone and it is showing through their work then maybe it needs to be addressed. Otherwise stop micromanaging and let us do our jobs without focusing on the small stuff.- "Breast Is Best": A Mantra to Promote Infant Health? or Stigmatizing Adage to Guilt Moms
I think More teaching and follow up needs to be done after discharge on the fact that when moms go home some never produce enough milk for their baby. My son was the perfect baby in the hospital. Our first night home out of nowhere he became very fussy and cried nonstop for a few hours. Nothing we did helped. I tried breastfeeding but at that point my milk hadnt come in. Finally at 4 in the morning contemplating taking him to the ER I noticed his mouth and tongue were like sandpaper and his lips were dry and cracked. I had a sample of formula that was sent to me in the mail and nervously decided to try. I fed him 2 oz and he stopped crying and went right to sleep!!!! I was so upset. They make it as if you give them formula then they will never want the breast. Not true!!!! Im glad I did this bc now Ive heard horror stories about babies not being fed sufficienty and ended up with complications. Also i think its not one size fits all. The nurses assure you that your baby can go a few days without feeding after birth but how can you compare a baby born at 7lbs versus say 9 or 10 lbs. My son was 9lbs 4 oz. So logically I would this his need is more than a smaller baby. They should account for this!!- I'm So Over Nursing. I would rather work at Costco!!
Its sucks when it seems management is against you rather than with you. Ive been through four managers within the last few years. They all come in high and mighty and within a few months are gone for whatever reason. We just got a new manager and recently while working our census was low and we were overstaffed (a rarity). I was assigned only two patients. In the morning my manager notified me that I had an education module that needed to be completed asap. Being that I was not very busy it was the perfect oppurtunity to complete it. Some of these modules take about 20 minutes to complete. So while im doing my assignment my manager comes up to me and says " have you even seen any of your patients this morning" meaning Ive been sitting there too long and that must mean Im not working. I tell her Yes I saw them, I only have two patients and Im doing the assignment you just told me to complete. Right after that she goes into my patient room and who knows what she did or said. Im completely turned off by this. Ive been with my institution for over 10 years and someone new walks in and questions your work quality. Its disgusting!!!- Job Interview: What are your strengths and weaknesses?
I find it interesting all the comments from actual HR people meanwhile when you read everything about interviewing it says not to give anything negative about yourself. So confusing! The last couple of interviews I went on I felt that alot of the questions focused on negative things and how I handled them. How about asking what was the greatest memory you have as a nurse!!! Also, do these recruiters who are interviewing you have a healthcare background? When I answer some of the questions in detail it seems they have no clue what I really mean. And I found the more interviews I went on, they all started asking the same questions.- RN With Limited Bedside Experience - Having Trouble Getting in FNP Program
Not saying you need it but having bedside experience helped me immensely in my NP program. You need a basic knowledge of chronic diseases. I felt like it helped with critical thinking because of my bedside experience.- Yacker Tracker in the NICU ???
We have one on our unit and I see nothing wrong with it. It does get pretty loud at the nurses station at times and just put yourself in the patients shoes when they are trying to rest. In a Nicu I would think it would keep the staff mindful of their noise level as the babies also need to rest.- It seems like everyone but nurses make more money
I live in NYC. That was my salary 10 years ago. I make close to 100k a year now. Im not complaining. Like other people have said for the amount of years it takes to become a nurse compared to most others that need a masters degree to make 6 figures we are very lucky if you ask me. Lets not forget we get to clock out! Most people I know who make 6 figures work well over 40 hours a week.- It seems like everyone but nurses make more money
I read the avg RN salary in SF is 130s! - What is the grossest thing that's happened to you???
