  1. I have been an RN for 6 months and am currently living and working in Michigan. My fiance is a millwright/fabricator who has been out of work for over a year and wants to move out of state asap, not just to improve the chances of finding a job but be...
  2. Then STOP volunteering to do the doubles and arranging YOUR schedule so that your co-workers can stay home. Is it really safer for the patient to be cared for by an RN working a double shift and the scheduled RN being told to stay home on the off cha...
  3. Cops and Nurses

I admit I leave my badge on (and even flipped out so it hangs outside my coat in the winter) just in case of: 1.) If I get into an accident and am unconscious they'll be able to easily identify me (rather dark thinking, I know, lol) and 2.) maybe th...
  4. New back-to-school worry: Unvaccinated classmates

My daughter was born with Stage 4 Neuroblastoma 13 years ago, and she was not able to have ANY vaccinations until her immune system was strong enough, around age 4. She participated in Head Start at age 3 (very delayed speech) and I met with the teac...
  5. Sick employees in the workplace

I hope your co-worker realizes that she can apply for Intermittent FMLA to care for her child, I have this in place for my daughter, who is a cancer survivor and sees multiple specialists for follow up throughout the year. The only catch for most FML...
  6. Can we recommend a medication to a doctor to prescribe?

Just remember that the 'R' in SBAR stands for 'Recommendation'...I frequently toss in suggestions for meds/labs when speaking with the physicians, ESPECIALLY this time of year (new resident season). The most frustrating thing to hear when you call a...
  7. That awkward moment when....

Several years ago I wanted to go see the (second?) Twilight movie, and my friend, who is also an RN, said she'd go with me despite having seen it twice already (yeah, she's a fan, lol). This one scene comes on and it's an up-close shot of Jacob: shi...
  8. Is night shift healthier for some people?

I've been an RN for 4 years now, originally starting off on the 3p-11p shift...that wasn't for me, I never saw my school-age children and getting errands/chores done was difficult. I transferred to a 12hr day shift position after 6 months...for a new...
  9. Drug testing for Employment

To my knowledge, antidepressants do not show up on routine pre-employment drug screens. Medications for ADD or anxiety (for example Ritalin and Xanax) will show a positive result, but as long as you have a prescription for them it is not a barrier to...
  10. No call/ No show

For us a 'No Call, No Show' is exactly what it sounds like: you didn't show up for your shift and didn't call in ahead of time. Our Call in policy requires we call no later than 2 hours before the start of our shift, days or nights, and we have to bo...
  11. I recently spoke to my assistant unit manager about the possibility of a raise (still making the same wage the new-grads are currently being hired at), since I have been an RN for 4 years now and am considered one of the stronger/more experienced RN'...
  12. Pay raises only determined by HR, not Management??!

Thanks llg, reading your post has put the issue into perspective and I can now see the advantages to this system. I just wish HR would be more transparent on what their pay scale "ladder" is, and where I am on it...would be nice to know at what point...
  13. When you walk onto the unit and the crash cart is missing from it's usual spot...always, always a bad sign!
  14. Book recommendation?

Bed Number 10... I think it's out of print now, check your local library.
  15. Should I Stay Or Should I Go????

My suggestion is that, if you must work, to go with the traditional program and not the accelerated program. Working is difficult during any nursing program, and you'll be in less debt going the traditional route as well. Good luck!
  16. You might be a night shifter if...

When checking Facebook on a break at midnight or later (using my phone of course) and busting my 16 yo daughter for having posted something WAY after she should've been sleeping...her friends found my threatening reply posts rather entertaining :)
  17. Forced wearing of nursing cap.

I think it is discriminatory... the male students are allowed to participate and are not required to wear the cap. The female students who do not wish to wear the cap are being told they must wear the cap or they cannot participate...I'm with the OP ...
  18. Pediatric Oncology: I will ease a parent's fear.

@tcheshire88- Nancy Keene has authored/co-authored several books on childhood cancer and childhood cancer survivorship, I would recommend those to your aspiring student :)
  19. Pediatric Oncology: I will ease a parent's fear.

All through nursing school I planned on going into Pediatric Oncology, my 12 year old is a childhood cancer survivor...but I eventually came to the decision that it would be too hard on me emotionally to work in that field, not all children have the ...
  20. Can they just bump me up?

One of my previous employers still hired LPN's to work the floor (as of 3 yrs ago when I worked there), St. John Macomb in the northern suburbs of Detroit, if you're able to relocate...
  21. Complication with accessing a porta cath

Perhaps it's a positional issue...radiology most likely had him laying flat on his back, have you/your associates been accessing it with him sitting, or laying flat?
  22. Complication with accessing a porta cath

Was the Huber needle you were using the right length? I've seen various lengths ranging from 1/2 inch to 2 inches. When you inserted the Huber, did you 'feel' the needle hit the base of the port? I'm curious about the order to change the Huber every ...
  23. Nursing: Then and Now

It seems like today's tube feed formulas (Glucerna, Osmolite, etc) always cause diarrhea...did the 'old' way of using thinned blenderized real food do the same? It seems like those patients always end up with diarrhea and skin breakdown, maybe the ot...
  24. New Construction Nightmare

I worked on what was then a unit in a beautiful new wing: 36 spacious private rooms with build in couches/bed for relatives, outlets galore for any and all equipment, new beds with built in bed alarms that had 3 levels of sensitivity, flat screen TV'...
  25. RNs working swing shift

It can be a difficult shift if you have a family. My first RN job was 3p-11:30p, and because of the way my schedule was (I didn't have the option of changing it). I never saw my kids after school, got home after they went to bed, and rarely got to se...
