  1. AWOHHN Standards for Staffing

I used to have the nurse to patient ratios. Someone help me out here! I know our facility is not following them, I just want to have them to give to the other nurses to use to CYA and for calling in additional staff.
  2. L&D nurses and "infertility"

I have had 3 pregnancies. One ended in a late miscarriage. I have gotten pregnant pretty easily each time.
  3. Deliveries

Thanks for the info on that little book. It looks great and I ordered one!
  4. How do you encourage rooming in???

We only have nursery available at night 11-7. This is to allow the new moms a chance to rest. They are always informed that it is only as staffing permits and if we get busy the infant will be returned to their care. Breastfeeders are informed that...
  5. Drug testing Labor patients

We will test if we are suspicious or if the patient has had a prior positive drug test. We will often test the baby depending on the type of substance used. Otherwise, we just keep an extra close eye on the newborn.
  6. Dealing with doctors.....

You did nothing wrong. He is angry and knows that it was his fault that he didn't make it. You are much easier to be angry at than it is for him to deal with his anger with himself.
  7. Pushing at "10"

I will usually ask if they feel like pushing. If the answer is "I guess" or "I could try" they are not ready yet!
  8. Am I crazy

I don't know you well enough to determine your level of mental fitness. I do think that was too many interventions and way too soon.
  9. Exclusive rooming in

Same with us. Unless the baby is having problems, it is with the mother. We encourage someone to stay over with the new mom especially if she is nervous. We do have a few nursery techs that work 11-7 when we are really busy. There are only 2 nurses...
  10. L&D On Call

I also work in a small, rural hospital. We do about 300 deliveries a year. We have no "extra" staff on call but do have call when there are no patients or even a pp couplet (the second person on will take call). We get $2/hour for call. We only ...
  11. Balboa Medical Center OB

I had a pretty good experience there delivering my first in 1998. But, I am certain that none of the same people are still there. It is a teaching hospital and has all the bells and whistles.
  12. experienced rn seeking job in L&D

Well, the pay isn't the greatest, but housing is fairly cheap in my area.
  13. experienced rn seeking job in L&D

Where in TN are you? We are desparate in NW TN!
  14. Echogenic Foci in ultrasound

Sorry that I never got back to you one this. :imbar I can't get back there.
  15. Fentanyl for Labor Pain?

I gave Fentanyl quite a bit at the first facility where I did L&D. I also got some when I was in labor with my first, but it only helped through about 2 contractions. I went from 0/100% to delivered baby in about 2 1/2 hours. I don't think muc...
  16. Do you stick around?

I went in last night at 1845 and left this am at 1100, nuff said!
  17. Is a pacifier a chargeable item in your facility?

Only one of my three would take a pacifier. My oldest got lots of NNS @ the breast, but since the younger two are only 4 minutes apart. I didn't have a lot of extra time for NNS @ the breast. The one that took the paci now sucks her thumb. She ju...
  18. CNM's during labor?

We have one midwife who pretty much pops in for delivery.
  19. How many times has this happened to you?

I had so many ultrasounds with my last pregnancy that I had no doubts to the sex! I had at least 5 level II ultrasounds and lots more little scans in the office by my OB.
  20. Birth Ball question?

They are the same thing as exercise balls. I saw a more tube shaped one at WalMart the other day. That would provide all of the same benefits without the fear of falling off.
  21. Oh my god! I passed!!!

That is wonderful! I often get wrapped up in my patients and forget about my charting. I do make sure to write everything on the strip. It sure makes it easier to go back.
  22. sp C/S diet

Duramorph is the devil! It seems like everyone reacts to it with either N/V or really evil itching.
  23. At what gestation do you stop treating PTL?

I work at a small, rural hospital. We do about 30 deliveries in a busy month. Level I nursery. We try not to deliver anything before 37 weeks. Nearest NICU is over an hour away.
  24. Home birth vs. hospital

It is almost impossible to compare statisitics. Homebirths should and usually are only considered in low risk situations. Granted, we all know how quickly things can go bad. There is nothing wrong with trying to have a good birth experience. We a...
  25. number of nurses in delivery room

Yes, very often a single LPN will be the only nursing attendant in the room. Our "normal" scheduling has one RN and one LPN on per shift. Our LPNs are able to do everything in your second paragraph except give IV push medications. I am at a very s...
