Hi. I know it has been a while since you posted this, but I thought I would share my insight. Boulder Community is a small hospital and it's ICU is soon to be in jeopardy as a new facility in Lafayette is opening in December. The new facility, Exempl...
I like to know what occured on the shift I am taking over for, abnormal labs or vitals, PRN's given, etc. I also like to know when the pt first came in, (ie: this pt was admitted 12/22 s/p crani) and what the plan is for the pt (ie: once stabilized ...
We can sign up early or get called in for an extra shiftf. Anyway, we get 1 1/2 times plus $12.50/hr extra for a bonus shift, and if you are a day shift worker who picks up a night shift you get the $5 differential on top of it.
Hi. I have not had the procedure but have seen an awful outcome of having it done. My first ICU rotation in nursing school I took care of a 34 year old patient (also a nurse herself) who had recently had the procedure and was suffering complication...
You have to have an order for a foot IV at our facility, which I think is a smart idea. Not only is the phlebitis rate higher, but people with poor circulation (diabetes, PVD, etc) can have even worse consequences.

Starting out as a CNA is a very good way to begin. I worked as a CNA and then a Medical Assistant while I spent two years on my pre-requisites and another two in nursing school. My experience I gained was very beneficial. Like many others siad it ...
I am where I am now for my year of experience before I go to the ICU. I am also there because I like hospital nursing and I love the patients I take care of. :-)
I went to school in Kansas for my LPN and my RN and I took my boards in Colorado. I had a classmate who went to school with me and took her boards for Texas and now works there. Just check with the Texas state board of Nursing for any requirements ...
I ALWAYS wear gloves... Sometimes I have a difficult time starting IV's with gloves on, but then I will just put on the smallest size so I can feel the vein better, because I don't want to take any chances.
I am writing a research paper on pain control for a class for my BSN and I would love any input, advice or stories from anyone out there. I think that pain control is a HUGE issue right now. My question is this, how many of you assess your patients...
Great thread! I am a new grad, I've been working Neuro/Trauma for 5 months now and looking back I have to say that I have learned A LOT. I went through a program like yours where you are an LPN and then an RN, and I have to say that it was very ben...
I work on a Neuro/Tele Unit and the ratio is 1:5 on days and 1:6 on nights. The charge nurse takes 3 on days and 4 on nights. Sometimes we have one extra due to staffing, but usually it stays fairly balanced.
The way our school did it was for the students to go to the facility the night before for assignments, and then we were required to make med cards, diagnosis cards, lab cards and procedure cards and bring them to clinicals with us the next morning. ...
I have read both the books you listed "Intensive Care" and "Condition Critical". Does she have more than those out? I really liked reading her books. I read them before I started nursing school and really enjoyed reading them. Another good nursin...
One thing that really frustrates me which many of you have touched on is when co-workers show up late for work and then take their sweet time to get their stuff together before they decide to listen to report, etc. Well our manager, who is AWESOME d...
Hello to all. I am 22, almost 23, just graduated last month from an ADN program and am working as a RN on a Neuro/Trauma Unit and loving it! It is nice to know that there are other people my age going into nursing. Good luck to everyone!
I am an ADN graduate and would like to eventually go back for my BSN, but I am glad that I started with my ADN. It allowed me to get out into the nursing world and start working an gaining experience earlier, and when I do go back for my BSN I feel ...
