smallpox vaccine gone awry
They lure unsuspecting highschool kids with big promises. I'm very supportive of our troops, the whole situation is very sad and desperate over there, where the locals will blow themselves up, or behead their enemy. These young people of ours deserve better. As far as vaccines, they are mandatory in the military, they don't have the freedom of choice about their healthcare that every American citizen, every patient, deserves.

New Nurse 6 Months-float ?
Why are all your words capitalized? I didn't read your whole post, but I gather that you were floated and didn't like it. I've always enjoyed floating, I just act really dumb and they are always nice and give me an easy assignment. Of course you don't know what to do, you've never been there before. Just ask alot of questions, smile, and don't act like you know what you're doing, cause you don't, that way you'll get an easy assignment

phone calls no outsider would believe
She was more pleasant that the barking dog, that's for sure.

phone calls no outsider would believe
LOL, I was wondering if I could slip a few metoprolols to a nearby barking dog with an irresponsible and unpleasant owner, just to slow down the dog's heart and make it go 'to sleep'. I was so PO'd at that woman when I walked down to politely inform her that her dog had been barking for 2 hours, and maybe she could bring it in the house...:angryfire She told me to basically jump in a lake, that she didn't care if it annoyed me, she didn't want the dog in the house.:angryfire

smallpox vaccine gone awry
Thanks for agreeing with me, I always appreciate that. I just don't trust the government and I think the drug companies are in cahoots with them, and they're all corrupt.

What is a 'disturbed energy field'? That sounds like New Age mumbo jumbo.

smallpox vaccine gone awry
Many people say that 'Gulf War Syndrome' was the result of the ridiculous quantity of vaccines that the troops were forced to receive, which was an assault on their immune systems of such magnatude that it caused damage. The government has always used the military as gunea pigs in this way, just check your history. They did it with nuclear testing, agent orange, LSD experiments, etc and so forth.

smallpox vaccine gone awry
I mean, what a ridiculous example of an unneeded vaccine, of a disease that WAS successfully wiped off the planet, but the government subjects our servicemen and women to it, on the slim chance of some terrorist getting his hands on some smallpox that was locked away in a vault somewhere. They have done more damage to these men and women with their constant harebrained scemes over the years, not to mention stupid military escapades they've embarked on at a terrible loss of life and limb! These men and women totally lose their civil rights when they enter the military.

smallpox vaccine gone awry
I'm not surprised. No, I didn't receive the vaccine and I think the hysteria over this was absurd. I actually had the smallpox vaccine at age 6 anyways. I'm so sick of our government and the ridiculous hysteria they whipped up after 911, now we are stuck in Iraq, and the death toll is rising daily, not to mention the 1000s of civilians who died there who were not terrorists.

new grad having trouble w/ icu personalities
Some people feel that a nurse should not go to ICU immediately out of school, maybe this is one issue with them? They will probably accept you once you have proven yourself.

The 'Image' of Nursing
You guys make some valid points. I think you probably have a variety of perceptions, depending on the person you are talking to. Some people are more tuned in to the fact that nurses are technically saavy and medically knowledgable. We can reinforce that by giving intelligent explanations to them regarding their conditions. Some patients are just very self centered, and do only consider nurses handmaidens and pillow-fluffers. I don't think you're going to change that portion of the population, no matter what.

To the single parent night shifters
Have you considered eventually finding a roomate? Maybe another single mom? Just a thought. Congratulations on getting your son and also on finishing nursing school

need help--husband died at home
I'm so sorry about this. I agree, it's easy to feel guilt, I went through that (guilt)when my husband died almost 10 years ago. I was 40 and he was 52, similar ages to you and your husband. This is a very stressful time, especially if you have kids. If you want to talk, please PM me, or email. I'm sorry you're going through this awful time.

What do you think of Nursing Care Plans?
Just for fun, I said they are a tool of Satan. I also think they are foisted on bedside nurses by academia and a waste of precious time.

phone calls no outsider would believe
I didn't think so at the time. Since I was adopted myself, I tried to give her some advise on how to pursue her goal of finding her daughter. We actually had a very interesting conversation. She probably didn't know too much about the process, and since I had searched and found my birthmother's family, I was able to help her.

The 'Image' of Nursing
We all think careplans are a colossal waste of time and another example of regulations gone berzerk

I work in a small ICU at a small hospital

The 'Image' of Nursing
I've never met a nurse yet who comes to work and consults the careplan. We fill them out because they are required by regulators, not to really plan care.

The skunks don't reign surpreme at my place, I've trapped and killed well over 100 of them. My animosity with them is of Biblical porportions.

The 'Image' of Nursing
We hear about the 'image' of nursing. We've seen attempts by nursing leadership to improve it's image. Some say that the whole NANDA thing was an attempt to make nursing seem more 'professional' in it's own right. I personally thought it was ridiculous, and the whole care plan thing is annoying and dumb, in my mind. Then, I read in the latest poll regarding the most and the least trusted professions, and nurses came out on top again. Nurses are loved by the public, apparently. And, that's my personal experience. I am respected and loved by my community because I am a nurse. So, what's your take on this?

Contacted Oprah Show About Nursing Issues
I don't personally care for Oprah and I think her audience consists of a disportionate amount of people who don't have much going for them, like unemployed people. No offense intended to people here who like her, but as far as I'm concerned daytime television in geared towards people without a life. Oprah IS better than Jerry Springer, I will conceed that much.

Healthier Living Thread Part IV
As far as city life, it doesn't agree with me. I like visiting cities though.

Healthier Living Thread Part IV
Zoe, Your plan sounds good. I think us Americans are too materialist and driven. In my opinion, Europeans know how to pace themselves better, and savor life. They also take the time to prepare healthy meals instead of eating fast food. I want to emulate some of those postive qualities.
