  1. Operating room charges

Yes we do all charges on the computer. It does take extra time to have to put in implants though, especially when there are alot of different screws and plates. This is a royal pain in the butt.
  2. dry cracked heels

I use the ped egg then apply "Body Butter-Cocoa Butter" from The Body Shop. Apply this after every shower or foot soak.
  3. Poll: Do you like taking call?

No, i do not like taking call. I go thru phases though...sometimes i'll volunteer to take extra call from co-workers and sometimes i want to give away all my call shifts. We only make $3.00/hr for being on call and we must arrive within 30minutes. We...
  4. Just curious and wanted to know if anyone has been fired or kicked out of a surgeon's room. Temporarily or permanently? Did they confront you face to face and tell/yell at you? Or did they go behind your back and do it? Would like to hear your experi...
  5. How do YOU deal with stress?

Nursing can be very stressful and draining. I am curious how everyone here deals with stress. As for me, I go to the gym 3-5 days a week. I read to escape from reality sometimes. I also love comedy. Just started using aromatherapy again with meditati...
  6. I'm getting kind of tired with my OR and the BS i have to deal with often. Its getting harder each day to get my lazy unmotivated butt out of bed to go to work. Everytime i'm assigned with a doc i can't stand working with its even harder. We usually ...
  7. Operating X-Ray

Do you operate the C-Arm during cases when the xray tech steps out for a bit or is not available? Our educator told us a while ago that we are prohibited from operating xray. Only a doctor or RT can press the button to take xray. I see a few nurses i...
  8. Post op teaching for spinal fusion surgery

  9. Teensie weensie biopsy specimens...

Agree! I make sure i see the doc put the specimen on telfa, then the scrub will usually use 18g needle to pass off the tiny specimen to me into little vial already filled with formalin. I closely watch the specimen being placed into the vial and make...
  10. Prepping a Forearm/wrist and ankle??

I'm wondering the same. I see majority of people start at the incision and work their way up, toss that sponge then start at incision again and work down. I've also seen people do the toes or fingers first (toss that sponge) so that the holder (with ...

  13. Disinfecting cuffs?

We have always used sterile disposable cuffs but just started to send them to be reprocessed.
  14. My first contamination (I feel bad) LONG

Aww, we have ALL contaminated more than once. Its a lesson learned and we're not perfect. The first few times i contaminated someone or something i was scared to death of getting yelled at. Used to stress me out so bad, not anymore. I do have to add ...
  15. Equipment troubleshooting tips

We do have a technician that troubleshoots/repairs equipment. If i can't fix it then i call him. Usually turning equipment on/off fixes the problem or making sure the plug is all the way in. I have also done the bipolar cable thing. We always have tr...
  16. Just a vent....

I understand what you're going thru. I've been told the same thing "b/c they don't know me and have to get used to me." I've been in the OR for 2 years and there are still surgeons who will ignore me if i ask them a question or treat me like i'm stup...
  17. Favorite specialty and why?

Hello everyone! I was just wondering what your favorite specialty is and why? Also which is your least favorite specialty and why. I like general because you see a variety of things, i especially like big bowel cases. I know that may sound weird. I a...
  18. Going back to the OR

Haven't seen you in a while! Congrats to the new position! If i remember correctly i think you pretty much did everything at your other place and you seem to know what you were doing. I think you will acclimate pretty quickly. 3-4 months is great and...
  19. Pigeon holed?

I'm curious to see the responses because i don't think i'm going to stay in the OR forever. I do want to try other things. It would be difficult because i started in the OR straight out of nursing school and feel alot of my med/surg skills are slowly...

I've only had to restrain a child once, a big 7 year old autistic boy. PARENTS ARE NOT ALLOWED IN OUR OR, only in preop. So therefore parents can not be there for the masking/ intubation part. Usually we give them a lil sumthin to calm down but could...
  23. Bair Huggers

Thats scary! I've never seen anyone in my department use the hose unattached during a case, we all use the upper or lower body blanket attached to the hose. I've only used the hose to warm up the bed before the patient comes into the room and still t...

Our orientation is 4 weeks in AORN's class and 6-7 months clinical. You circulate and scrub.
  25. Bair Huggers

I do this sometimes but don't see anyone else do this in my department. It helps warm up the bed a bit before the patient comes to the room. I learned this from when i oriented to women's surgery, they do this all the time. I tried to do this in our ...
