  6. Jonathan Slonin, an anesthesiologist and past president of the Florida Society of Anesthesiologists, believes that lawmakers should not allow the administration of anesthesia without a physician in the room. Although he works with and respects Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs), they are not physicians. While the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists are advocating for a proposed bill that would allow CRNA’s to practice without the supervision of a physician, some see this as a dangerous and costly move. What do you think??? For more on this story, see Anesthesia without a physician in the room? Lawmakers should not all that / Opinion

Why Nurses Should Join the Gig Economy Right Now

Hello ANA California. Welcome to allnurses. Please add more to your comment to explain how CA AB 5 is detrimental to the benefits of the gig economy. This information would be greatly appreciated.
  9. We have had multiple discussions here on allnurses about RaDonda Vaught’s fatal medical error two years ago in which she accidentally administered a fatal dose of a paralytic drug to a patient. Many have expressed opinions pro and con regarding the Tennessee Department of Health’s decision that RaDonda’s error did not warrant professional discipline. Not much additional information has been released about the case...until now. Although this information was not made public until this week, on September 27, 2019, the decision was reversed by the Tennessee Board of Nursing and RaDonda is now being criminally prosecuted and being charged with unprofessional conduct and abandoning or neglecting a patient that required care... Vaught’s attorney was quoted in an email saying, “ In February, Vaught was charged with reckless homicide and impaired adult abuse. In a previous court appearance, Vaught publicly admitted she made a mistake but pleaded not guilty to all criminal charges. Since Vaught's arrest, this case elicited an outcry from nurses and medical professionals across the country. Many have accused prosecutors of criminalizing an honest mistake. A hearing is scheduled for November 20, 2019. Click here to see the discipline charges. What do you think about the recent charges? Why Nurses Should Join the Gig Economy Right Now

The OP is talking about time and that you should spend it doing what you want....what you feel to be valuable and uplifting. She is not suggesting that you necessarily spend more time at the bedside. If you want to start a business, work from home so you can spend more time with family, a side gig can turn into a source of revenue so that you can have more time to spend it how you want.

Who are the Scariest Nurses in Movie History?

Halloween is right around the corner. Time for all the ghosts and goblins (of all sizes and ages) to show up at your door expecting a chocolate treat. Every year I am surprised by the number of older trick-or-treaters who come to my door. There are even parents carrying babies expecting treats for the baby. Hmmmmm..... Every year, I still get at least one child dressed as a nurse. YAY!!!! We still make the cut, even if some of the teens have a scarier version from a horror movie. Nurse in horror movies..... Over the years, Hollywood has decided to put these "angels in white" in a different light and showcase them as murderers, psychopaths, etc. Who are some of the most memorable evil nurses in cinematic history? Let's see how long of a list we can come up with.

6,500 Nurses to Go Out on Strike 09/20/19 in Four States

Thank you for sharing. More importantly, thank you for standing up for safer staffing.
  18. I was reading through my various nursing news feeds this morning and "Hints from Heloise" popped up. I wondered why Heloise was in a Nursing news feed so I clicked on the link. A man who was a recent patient was appalled by the lack of nurses. So he wrote the following letter to Heloise. Henry P. in Atlanta Heloise did not post a response. As a nurse, how would you respond to this former patient? At least he gets the point that "there just are far too many patients for the limited number of nurses available." If we get enough responses, I'll send them to Heloise and tell her these represent the voices of nurses across the US. It might be helpful for all of you to post what state you are in so Heloise will see that we are a good representation of the best nurses in the USA. You could also post your years of experience and whatever else you want to post. Let's give Heloise and the public the hint that if you want to hear the voice of real nurses, ask the nurses at allnurses.com.

6,500 Nurses to Go Out on Strike 09/20/19 in Four States

According to one CBS news source: https://www.cbsnews.com/news/university-of-chicago-nurse-strike-2200-nurses-walk-off-job-today-2019-09-20-live-updates/ https://chicago.cbslocal.com/2019/09/20/university-of-chicago-nurses-strike-2/ I wonder if the hospital ever considered spending that money to pay for more staff to provide safer staffing ratios and patient care????

  24. Charges against nurses resulting from deaths in a Hollywood, Florida nursing home following 2017 Hurricane Irma power shortages have been the topic of many news stories in recent days. As Hurricane Dorian is strengthening and projected to hit Florida, according to the Agency for Healthcare Administration, approximately 60% of FL nursing homes have not complied with a state mandate requiring all nursing homes and assisted living facilities to have backup generators or power sources for air conditioning. Although the original deadline for compliance was June 1, 2018, state officials have been asked by nursing home facilities repeatedly to push back the deadline. Those requests have been grated 3 times. Residents of those facilities are at risk. With Hurricane Dorian knocking at the door and sure to bring widespread power outages, how will this be any different than the Irma tragedy? Who is looking out for the welfare of the frailest of our population? Please post your comments below. For more on this story, go to 60% of FL Nursing Homes Still Without Backup Power
