RN, ADN being obsolete
Try heading a little north of you into New Mexico.

Too old for OB?
I'm 64 and still working in OB. There are days when I feel the effects of age but then there are those days even on my days off. The only concession I have made is that (as a travel nurse) I now tend to look for positions in community sized or smaller hospitals rather than the huge "assembly line " L&D units.

New grad struggling to find jobs
There was just a news article the other day here in Santa Fe, NM about the current need for nurses here. There is a brand new Presbyterian Hospital opening in the fall and the other hospital in town is also hiring - Christus St. Vincent. I'm a traveler so I've never been an actual employee of either of these systems but thought this might be interesting for those able to relocate.

Too old to travel nurse????
Just to give you a little more encouragement, I'm now 63 and still traveling. After 21 years as a traveler I'm still getting jobs.

Current Labor and Delivery Nurses: How did you get your job?
I was working in a different area and applied for a job in a medically underserved area. I relocated across the country to be able to get an OB job and be trained in it.

How to call a provider at 3 am
I'd add to this to check with your coworkers to see if anyone else anticipates needing to call the same provider. That way you can save them an extra wake up. As a side note, I once sent the police out to contact a doctor who was not responding. He was in the middle of moving and had left his phone at the other house.

Sometimes, it just Stinks
For the worst odors: a few drops of tincture of benzoin on a cotton ball inside your mask. You won't be able to smell anything else.

I was found out!
I've been recognized from this site on multiple occasions. Not unexpectedly since my particular work situation is pretty rare (21 years a travel nurse - not too many of us). (And I don't look anything like Ned) I just make it a practice never to post anything on here that I wouldn't say sitting in the break room at work, never knowing who's standing outside of the door. If I post about a situation it's generally one which could have occurred in any of about 15 states over a span of 20 years and I obscure details. I never post about my current work.

Nurse calls cops after woman seeks help for postpartum depression. Right call?
As a mandated reporter I don't see that the nurse had any other option than to follow protocol and call the police. How many times have we read a news article of something tragic happening to a child (or any vulnerable person) and asked "Why didn't anyone intervene before it came to that point?". I'm sure it was upsetting for the woman but still better than looking back to think "If only I had reported that a tragedy may have been averted."

Fingerprint failure
Too many years of scrubbing will wear down your fingerprints. Find one of the places that does the electronic scanning of your fingerprints and you will have better results. I go through this with each new state in which I license.

Singlism in the workplace
This post should have come with a "coffee spew" warning!

Hospital Ad Campaigns
The most annoying ad I've seen was a billboard for a hospital ER advertising "make an appointment online and wait at home for your time". People - if you can wait at home - it's NOT an emergency!

What do you think of 12 hour shifts
I work 12 hr. nights and if 8 hr shifts were all that was available I'd retire. As a travel nurse I'd see no point in going to a new area if I didn't have the extra days off to enjoy sightseeing.

Just........no.
I haven't looked up her other tweets yet but my first thought on reading the article was that she was writing satire in the tradition of Jonathan Swift's "A Modest Proposal".

Going to color coded scrubs.
Color coding is a real pain as a travel nurse! I have an entire rainbow of scrubs purchased for various 3 month assignments. I love the occasional hospitals which supply scrubs in the required color.

Can I wear long press on nails if I wear gloves during my whole shift?
Is this really a serious question? I figured the trolls were bored.

What would you do? Provider without ID starts examing your patient without introduction
I walk up and say "Hello, I'm bagladyrn. I don't believe we've met". Had a few providers become indignant that I don't know them but if they aren't wearing their badge it's their own fault.

Mandatory Evacuation: Facing Fear of the Unknown
Now that the fires are out I was awakened today be my phone blaring an emergency alert warning of mud and landslides and flash floods along my route to work! We are currently under some weird kind of "river" of rain from the Pacific. Told my recruiter for my next contract I want to go somewhere that no natural disasters happen! She says good luck with that!

Mandatory Evacuation: Facing Fear of the Unknown
I went through some of this recently. I'm on a travel contract in Oregon and the entire town I am housed in was evacuated. I was at work on night shift when the house supervisor came around and asked me where I was living. When I replied she told me that there was an alert for possible evacuation in that area. Fifteen minutes later she came back and told me it had been upgraded to "Leave now.". I have a friend traveling with me so I had to clock out, drive home, wake her and grab a few things and get out. Luckily the hospital is in a different town so I was able to get a motel room and avoid staying at a shelter so I could continue working. Just to top things off, Hurricane Irma was at the same time so my mother and my house were in the path of that. Thanks to cell phones we were able to keep in touch during our mutual evacuations.

California Requires Gender Pronouns
And this sort of attitude among health care providers is exactly why this law is necessary. Why would you think that your personal opinion as to someone else's gender identity is relevant or needs to be considered?
-
California Requires Gender Pronouns
Okay, first of all, an individual can identify as male while still having a functioning uterus, so pregnancy as well as diseases of those organs needs to be considered. If everyone were educated and respectful of other people's gender expression there would not be a need for such laws. Unfortunately we don't live in such a world so legislation is needed to protect patients from the behavior of the bigoted and ignorant.

Confused about negotiations
Hey Ned! I resemble that remark! What do you mean we don't lurk?
