  1. Change from software to NP

To become an NP, you first would have to get a bachelors of science in nursing (BSN). If you have to work, your best bet will probably be to apply to an assosciates degree program (ADN). In my area it is common for community colleges to offer part ti...
  2. New nurse coming off orientation and feeling like I can’t do it

Don’t feel bad about your buddy helping you. In the ICU, there will be times you need help, no matter how long you’ve been a nurse. also, I think anyone would have ended up frazzled/behind with all that happening at the end of shift. I definitely s...
  3. CCRN Exam

So, how did you study? Looking to take it early next year
  4. Immunocompromised Loved One

I understand your intentions with this, but I don’t think you’ll ever find a workplace that lets you not skip out on taking care of isolation patients.
  5. Times for drawing a Troponin Series

We do the first 3 draws q3 hours. (0000, 0300, 0600). Then go to q6 until the provider is satisfied and discontinues them.
  6. CRNA Scope

I’m not sure why you wouldn’t just become an NP if you want to diagnose in a clinic setting?
  7. Lowest bicarb on abg

pH 6.6, bicarb 6. Did not live for even 24 hours after arriving to the hospital
  8. Who is watching the monitor?

We have never had a monitor tech. We set appropriate alarm parameters and are very conscious of alarms. There are different sounding alarms for lethal arrhythmias and everyone is pretty aware of those and immediately checks on a room if they hear it.
  9. New Grad off of orientation....Struggling

This too shall pass. Your feelings are very normal for a new nurse! Your charge nurse/coworkers are expecting you to have questions and need a little help here and there. It will get better. You will find a routine, you will become more efficient. T...
  10. Bad idea to quit after 6m as a new grad for DNP school?

I’m not really sure why you are asking for opinions; you seem to have made up your mind. You’ve already enrolled and have your reasons lined up for why you can’t stop the program now. Just tell your manager you’re going to have to look for part-time ...
  11. What city do you work in and how much do you get paid hourly?

Northern panhandle WV, started at 22.60 as a new grad. I think the diff is only $1/hr for nights
  12. NxStage CRRT CVVH connection question

Yep, you should be fine. We always run CVVHD so we always have to switch to green-to-green
  13. First 8 months in ICU-2 jobs over- Question

I don’t think any CRNA program is going to consider your 8 months as real experience. You were on orientation for most, if not all, of that time. You have to decide what’s more important, your short-term happiness & satisfaction with a job you ta...

  15. What Insulin Protocols Do You Use?

Sorry for the confusion, Cardiac surgery currently uses it. However, I prefer the MICU formula we use over the Portland.

  18. New Grad- Periop or ICU

Hi there, I am a new grad nurse so take my advice with a grain of salt, I still feel like I know nothing haha. But I would take the ICU position if offered it. Nurse residency programs can offer so much more continuing education and resources, and I...
  19. diuresing from chest tube

Hi all, I am a new grad in cardiac surgery ICU and something interesting came up the other day I've never heard of before (granted there are lots of things I've never heard of being I am new to this world). A patient had a complicated open heart sur...
  20. diuresing from chest tube

Yes, that's why i was concerned, because most patients have their tubes out by POD 2 or 3 as the drainage has dwindled down by that point. Some nurses on my unit said they had heard of "diuresing" through the chest tubes before and some said that it ...
  21. My BSN program, which also has very high NCLEX passing rates, is also set up this way. Junior year we only have clinical ~9 hours, once a week. During our senior year, our clinicals are one 12 hour shift a week working with a preceptor. Some of my cl...
  22. Quiting clinicals because of bad work envirnoment

You are definitely not alone in having a clinical experience that is less than ideal. I mean, you really don't have options here, except for to go back to clinicals in June. I suggest you go back in with a good attitude and not with the mentality tha...
  23. Hello, I am a student in an accelerated BSN program in Western PA, scheduled to graduate in December. I am a resident of WV and currently work at a hospital in WV where I will stay once I become an RN. My school's director told me that she only help...
