Hi everyone!!! I have been reading practically every post in the school nurse discussion board. I just received a job offer for a middle school nurse position for the 2017-2018 school year! I have been trying to get a school nurse position for a while now and I am so excited that I finally received an offer! I am currently a nurse sub for the school district that I will be working for. My question is: can I do anything from now until August to help my year go as smooth as possible? I am going to read "School Nursing: A Comprehensive Text". Any other suggestions for me? Any specific pointers for middle school? Thanks so much!

Supplies, make sure you have enough
Immunizations, make sure you have a system to check them all and make sure they are up to date. (Make sure you have a saved and a printed copy of your states immunization requirements)
Ice packs... lots of ice packs.
Patience, lots of patience.

Middle School ain't for sissies!!! Be nice but FIRM or they will eat you for lunch!!! It is 2% first aid and 98% psych nursing.
That being said, the ones you touch during this highly emotional and transitional time will remember you forever and be grateful for your TLC.

Find out if your state's Department of Education does any type of orientation for new school nurses. Mine does. I'm in Minnesota. The Dept of Ed hosts a 2 day New School Nurse Orientation Class each August. It really helped me learn all of the Special Education specific paperwork, evaluations, reports, etc because I do participate in each and every one. 93 so far this school year!

Get familiar with the ppl at your County Health Dept. that deal with Immunizations. AND....hang out here often!! Ohhh...you know about Fetch/Pink Wednesdays!?
