Prejudice Teacher

My teacher for my pre req nursing program is horrid. He is from China and is extremely prejudiced against Americans. We are constantly subjected to his 'tidbits' of information about how Americans are basically extremely stupid compared to other countries. If students have not grasped a concept he's taught, he will say things like, In China we learn this in 3rd grade. What is wrong with your school system that you can't understand basic concepts? He also says things like, America may have some of the best schools, but most people don't get in there, most people get into crap schools, so the vast majority are under qualified. Today his rant was about nurses in the US. He said the that united states nurses have a high propensity for killing patients by misreading solutions placed into the bloodstream. He said a lot of nurses don't understand the concept of Isotonic solutions, blah blah blah. One of the students raised his hand and said, don't other countries have the same problem. He said sure, but because the educational system in the us is so poor we have much lower standard of nurses here. He has said a lot of really derogatory things, a lot more than i have mentioned. A lot of the students hate him, but no one wants to speak up. I feel like I'm in a hostile educational environment every time i come to his class. I really dislike this man but I'm at a loss of what to do. Im on the verge of anger a lot of the times. I had to stop myself from screaming at him , "Go back to China and teach there if you think were so dumb!"

now he's making me turn into a racist smh

No one is making you turn into a racist. That is a decision you are making yourself. You are portraying the attitude you dislike so much in your professor.

Maybe when he was a student China he was taught by hostile teachers and does not recognize that North American students find it determental to learning. You and your classmates can write a group letter to the school administrator, list his offending comments along with the dates they occurred and the impact it is having on your ability to learn.

I had a teacher like this in the 1990s before anyone gave a rat's hoo haa if you were offended. He was Chinese also and he was very anti christian and made that very clear all semester, it was a philosophy class. One topic we were required to write on was "Is there a God". He made it clear that you were very unlikely to get a grade above a C if you were on the yes side of that debate. I'm a Christian and I stayed true to my beliefs. I got a C.

My opinion... suck it up. There are those in life that are antagonistic and you have to learn to deal with these people. When you get your survey on the teacher at the end of the semester express your opinion there.

So you're going to let the actions and thought process of ONE individual change your mind about all individuals of Chinese descent?

Well, he does have a point about American education.

But maybe instead of wasting class time talking about that, he could use class time to really teach you all very well. Maybe mention that next time he starts a rant?

"Professor, I understand your disdain about American education however if you want us to really learn these concepts, would you mind simply teaching the subject to us and leave out personal commentary?"

Or something like that . . .

Paragraphs would help, too.

no it was a flippant remark that formed in my head that i didn't express. I don't have any problems with any people of any descent. But i have a hard time swallowing other peoples prejudices in a learning environment. I don't care if you're racist, just do it on your own time.

its the same as if i accepted a position in a third world country and lamented my students about how i thought their country is backward and filthy. its rude and inappropriate. i believe the students would have every right to tell my elitist a** to go back to America if i had so much disdain toward their country.
