Pregnant and due during finals need advice

Published

Hey, I'm due April 30 which is basically at the end of Spring Semester (ends here May 13). Currently I'm going this fall without any problems (this is my third baby so I'm not new at this). Question for some of you in the same boat....should I skip next semester even though my loans will go out of deferment or should I get instructors to let me finish two weeks early and hope I don't have this baby before then? My last two kids were born at 41 and 40 weeks so I'm assuming this one would be similar. The classes I have to take are

3 credit Fine Arts Class

3 credit Microbiology

4 credit Anat and Pys I

I need to finish them to make the nursing school application deadline. Does it look like too much? I have 30 credits done now and I do have a 3.57 GPA so far.

:(

Personally I wouldn't take all those classes that pregnant. The end of pregnancy is so exhausting. Can any classes that you need be taken online?

That is a tuffy! Congrats on the new baby though!

Couldn't you take them over summer and then still apply in the fall or are the deadlines too early, and do they require that all your pre-reqs be completed before you even apply.

I suppose if you could take summer classes, try doing the A&P or Micro during the summer and the Fine arts class (which will hopefully be easy) and maybe the other science in spring, depending on how you fared with your other pregnancies at the end. If you can, talk to the profs you might have in spring if you decide to take classes then and ask ahead f time about re-working the schedual of the final. I found that if you talk to them earlier most are flexible.

Its hard to give a good answer, I don't know how the NS you are applying to is like.

Ours have pre-reqs and co-recs (classes you can take while in the program that don't have to be finished before entering but must be finished upon graduation). And you can apply while you are taking the last of your pre-reqs but will get on a waiting list if you do so, and wont officially be accepted until your final grade for that pre-req is completed.

But every school is different.

Hope everything worked out and that I didn't confuse you. :redbeathe

I forgot about summer! Yes, I will definitely consider that!!! Having the baby in April means I can definitely take July summer classes no problem...like I said, this isn't my first kid. :)

Well, personally I would *still* take them, and yes I have a child, a toddler, who was born right BEFORE my last semester of undergraduate school (we are talking two weeks before). Worst case scenario: You go into labor on a school day and miss maybe 2-3 days of class. If you have someone who can watch your baby while your in class those few hours a day 2-4 days a week for approximately two weeks then definitely do it! It really is not that long. Then you can take the summer off, and start back in the Fall. Save all of the days you can miss for the semester for that "week" you will be out, prior to finals.

Of course it is up to you, you know what you are capable of and if you are a student who is always on top of things and you coordinate it correctly you will be just fine. It is not like you are having major surgery and will need 6 weeks+ recovery in bed.

Thanks! I did have both previous kids via c/s so I know I'm looking at that probably being the case this time (even though I will try a VBAC again). So I would most certainly need a week minimum. I'm just wondering how taking a week off two weeks before finals will affect my focus. I need A's in these classes. Hoping I can find instuctors who will let me go early. Maybe do everything early EXCEPT the final and take the final two weeks later?

They have to give you reasonable accommodations just like anyone with a short-term disability.

If you have your baby early, and they will not permit you to take the exams early, they can give you an incomplete and you can finish it up later.

Incompletes, when finished, the "I" is removed and the earned grade is replaced.

They are given for various reasons and the person to take to is the Dean of the department.

This was back in the dinosaur days, but.....

I had my last baby the Monday of finals week. My instructors brought my tests to the hospital - this was 1983 and I was in the hospital Mon thru Sat. Then two weeks later I was allowed to come to school and take one last test.

I did not make all As on them, but did make above 85 on them all. Then I started back to school the following semester, which was after Christmas break.

That's a good idea about finishing up all of the work prior to your delivery except the finals, while retaining the right to take an Incomplete, as someone mentioned, should anything go wrong. I would tell the instructors that you are due during the last two weeks of the term and you will miss a few days of class to deliver your child. I would say that there is a chance for complications and you made need a little longer (say if you end up needing to have a ceasarian which is a good possiblility in your case :()--I am sure they will work with you. I know instructors who allow people to go on vacations the last two weeks of classes so delivering a baby shouldn't be too much of a problem!!

Good luck to you!!! (((Hugs))) I hope you have a healthy pregnancy and delivery!! :nurse:

God bless you, woman! My brain goes to complete mush when I am pregnant. I had a hard time recalling my phone number. You're superwoman!

Congrats and best wishes!

i think you can get a special deferrment for student loans

I ran into this last fall. I was pregnant and due in December - right in the middle of finals. I talked to my professors at the beginning of the semester and they all told me that if I went into labor and missed finals I could take an incomplete and then take my final at a mutually agreeable time and would then get a graded score. They were very understanding. Luckily, I was late and she came the week after finals so I didn't have to worry.
