4.0 pre reqs

Published

How hard is it to get a 3.75-4.0 in pre reqs. i know everyone is different, i just like to here your opinions. If you can after you answer the question could you provide your current gpa if its not to much to ask and maybe your high school background ie what kind of student you were in high school what grades did you earn. This is for me to know what im dealing with i hope this isnt to much to ask for.

High school was a long time ago for me, though it was among my best academic days. I was salutatorian of my class and I went on to college as a pre-med major ... but my first semester landed me in academic probation. My GPA was under a 2.0, I had D's in both bio and chem and I was also on scholarship probation. Many factors contributed to my downfall: culture shock of a new environment, too much partying, a flair for embracing my new independence. It was a wake-up call, so I changed my major and I earned a place on the Dean's List the following semester .. but that was not enough to get my cum GPA above a 3.0 so I lost my scholarship :crying2:

I continued to get above a 3.0 every semester after that and graduated with a cum above 3.0 as well, but that first semester is forever on my record and haunts me to this day. I went on to law school 3 years later and I basically got by with average grades. I really did not care to be there, had very little enthusiasm for the course material (I had some, but not 100%). Spent the next 9 years practicing a profession I pretty much hated.

Last year I re-evaluated my life and found that my desire to work in health care had never gone away, and a computerized career evaluaton at a job agency revealed that I should be working in that field. I looked at many jobs and discovered that nursing is where I need to be. Started volunteering and prereqs that summer and have earned an A in every course since. I have a 4.0 in prereqs for most schools that require certain courses, but for other schools that require additional prereqs I may have a 3.8. I work full-time, so I am especially proud of having found a way to balance the two and succeed in both as well. I am determined to recaputre my best academic days once again, because I have already replaced my D's from freshman year with A's the 2nd time around. I now know that a lack of focus and not necessarily a lack of smarts is what gets you into trouble academically.

The moral of the story: if you want it bad enough, you will find everything in your being to earn an A in your coursework. The right mindset going into the course and throughout is key. Don't ever let the difficulties get the better of you. Sitting around and blaming the professor or the materials will get you nowhere. It all starts and ends with YOU! It is not easy, but it is worth the effort in the end!

Thank you so much i just got back from my school and they told me thw program is very competitive like 200 kids out of 2000 get it in. This is at a CC let me remind you.

High school GPA: 1.6 (ranked 200 out of like 215)

Community college GPA: 3.2

Undergrad GPA: 3.48 (Graduated in May)

Last 53 credits (both CC and undergrad): 3.8

This summer i took A&P1, A&P2, microbio, and a religion class and i received all As (it was tough).

I don't think i got smarter or anything. The two biggest things that have changed is my work ethic and my expectations(or goals). I'm still only 4 years out of high school so i still have terrible study habits that i developed in high school but i make sure i get my work done no matter how little sleep i have or how late it is(i'm applying to accelerated nursing schools and i know i can't get away with late night cramming sessions anymore!)

There should be no reason why you cant get at least a 3.7 in your pre-reqs. If you are struggling with the material you should try to find a responsible study buddy.

Bern i think your post helps me the most. Im just an average guy but you all showed me i can do it

Hey JonB04,

The transition to college wasn't that bad at all. I had already set my mind on success and was not going to let anything get in the way. Someone else here hit the nail on the head when they said to not blame the material, or the professor and that it all comes down to you. I can't tell you how many times I have heard students say that the material is too hard, the professor is horrible, they are not smart enough, etc. Is it going to be hard? yeah, it is going to be difficult sometimes. College shouldn't be as easy as showing up and that is good enough. However, just like someone said "don't let it get the best of you". It can be done and people are doing it!:)

Btw, so can you!

I have a 4.0 and have worked REALLY hard to get it. I got out of high school as fast as I could and never went to college. I was not a fan of school. But then I found myself married and trying to get pregnant with our 2nd baby and realizing I wanted to go to school. I began prereqs for teaching before switching to nursing. I knew when I switched I HAD to get A's in every class to be competitive in the program. And here I am, only a couple classes away from nursing school and have kept my 4.0. It's all about determination, not smarts. I never would have considered myself "smart". But I knew how badly I wanted this and was willing to work to get it. I'm so glad I gave myself the chance to realize that. You can do it, too. If you truly put your mind to something and set a goal for yourself, as long as you don't give up and work hard, you can do anything.

I love the fact that i get so much love from allnurses.com thank you!
