Pre-req advice!!

Published

Hello everyone. I am greatly needing some advice. I only have 3 classes left to take before I can apply into the nursing program at my school. The classes are nutrition with diet therapy, microbiology, and general biology. To give you a little background about my education, I already have a previous BS degree in another field which I obtained years ago. I decided to pursue my dream of becoming a nurse. My goal would be to take these classes this summer, so that I will be eligible to apply into the program for spring 18'.

My issue is, biology is a pre-req for nutrition and micro. I want to take biology and nutrition together this upcoming summer term,(which I can't being that biology is a pre req for the other classes). Then take micro in the fall (I can't have two classes pending when I apply into the program, you can only have one pending class). Soo, if I can't take two classes this summer I won't be eligible to apply in the fall for spring term, which could postpone my dream for one entire yr, all for one class!!!

Is it possible to take multiple classes at two community colleges in order to get these last 3 classes completed??!?

Thanks so much for your help!!

Hi, it is possible to take classes in one semester at two different colleges/universities. I do not know, though, what the procedure for that in your state/city, but in NYC, CUNY specifically, it is called e-permit, which means if you are approved, you can take 1-2 courses at college A and other 1-2 courses at college B.

It probably isn't approved, thats how they have the system set up. My thought behind it is, I have taken higher caliber classes such as AP1 and AP2 years ago therefore I should be able to take biology combined with nutrition since biology is like going backwards in my opinion.

If you had taken AP1/2 before and did well, I don't see why you are unable to bypass the whole thing and take the two together. How were you able to take AP1/2 without taking the pre-req of Bio though? Because most schools make you take the Intro before even allowing you into the more advanced biology courses.

I would recommend going to the counselors and ask if they are able to override the class requirement and allow you to 'double up'. Make sure to bring your transcripts to show them that you already had AP1/2 to help drive your case.

I would speak with a guidance counselor and see if you can test out of the general biology class.

I was able to bypass originally because I took A&P1 while working on my first degree, I guess at that time biology wasn't a pre-req, it has been many years. Then after I graduated with my BS degree, I went to a community college that same yr and took A&P2.

The nursing advisor at my current school stated that she spoke to the chair in the science division and my request was denied because I needed biology as a foundation for micro and nutrition. To me it makes no sense. I'm trying to figure out a way to get these classes done this summer. So I was wondering if I can attend a CC and have those credits sent to my current school, since my current school won't allow me to take them together?

Is there a near-enough by community college that is not in the same comm college district? If so, you could probably take either the nutrition course there (online maybe?) and have that class transferred in to your present college. Yes, it is blatant skirting of the rules but who are they to tell you that you can't take two courses at the same time? I don't recall bio being a prereq to nutrition at any of the schools I dealt with over the years. Worth a look-see.

There are several community colleges that offer online science courses where you could try this workaround: Ocean County Comm College in NJ, consortium in CO and/or Kansas are other popular schools, there is also one in NY that I don't quite recall. Try doing a search for "online nutrition", etc. courses and see what you come up with. Pretty certain that the bio will be required before micro just about anywhere though.

I'm used to schools having 2 summer mini-semesters. If your school or a school in your area had that, why couldn't you take biology in Summer I and then nutrition and microbiology in summer II?

I was able to challenge the prerequisites for micro and physio at my local community college. It's a well respected California community college. Like you, I already had a BS but in Biology. The funny thing is that I took physio + micro together for spring followed by anatomy in the fall and now retaking chemistry for winter. I went in the reverse route and did just fine (I had near 100% walking into the final for all 4 classes). Let me know if you're in California. I'll direct you to the CC I attended.

Ok, thanks for the advice. I'm in FL.

The schools is my area have Biology as full term for the summer session. So it will run through summer I and summer II (from May to August). I thought about that, and it would've worked out perfectly had biology not have been a full term summer class.

Yes, there are a few community colleges in my area that offer these classes during the summer term. I could probably take nutrition and biology at the community college together and try to transfer the classes back to my current school. I was thinking about the consequences if any, there could possibly be for doing it. Not sure how that all works.
