Hello everyone. I am greatly needing some advice. I only have 3 classes left to take before I can apply into the nursing program at my school. The classes are nutrition with diet therapy, microbiology, and general biology. To give you a little background about my education, I already have a previous BS degree in another field which I obtained years ago. I decided to pursue my dream of becoming a nurse. My goal would be to take these classes this summer, so that I will be eligible to apply into the program for spring 18'.
My issue is, biology is a pre-req for nutrition and micro. I want to take biology and nutrition together this upcoming summer term,(which I can't being that biology is a pre req for the other classes). Then take micro in the fall (I can't have two classes pending when I apply into the program, you can only have one pending class). Soo, if I can't take two classes this summer I won't be eligible to apply in the fall for spring term, which could postpone my dream for one entire yr, all for one class!!!
Is it possible to take multiple classes at two community colleges in order to get these last 3 classes completed??!?
Thanks so much for your help!!
I would speak with a guidance counselor and see if you can test out of the general biology class.
I agree with this suggestion--similarly you can always try contacting the course's professors directly and explaining your situation. Many schools' registrars will allow you to enroll in a class even if you don't meet the pre-reqs if you have an email from the professor saying it's OK. Good luck!
The next class starts in May and runs through August. So technically, I wouldn't be unable to take any other classes other than that one. There is not an opportunity to start before hand. It's a 200 level class (general biology). Non of the bio classes here are offered online. Not sure why, at least not during the summer term.

OK, so sign up for the BIO class NOW at an online school and do it as an accelerated course. For example, start early March, finish end of April, start the other two classes in May, finish in August - time to apply!
I'm in a similar position - I also have 3 classes to finish before I can apply, and I want to get my application in by the end of May, so I have no option but to take all 3 classes on the accelerated program. I'm not happy about this because my classes are CHEM, MICRO-BIO, and PARA-PHYS, (plus labs for CHEM and MICRO). March and April are going to be horrible!!
I'm studying with Rio Salado college in AZ. They offer online classes that start every week. Last I looked, out of state costs were around $325 per credit hour. Generally, a BIO class will be a 4 credit class, so you're looking at over a $1000. So - not cheap, but at least you'll get the credit that will allow you to take the other 2 classes within the timeframe you're talking about.
Where there's a will there's a way!!

Here are the BIO classes they offer:

Looks like there are 3 200-level classes offered: A&PI (BIO 201), A&PII (BIO 202), and Microbiology (BIO205)
Contact your school and see which of these classes transfers over and is acceptable for the BIO class you need. They are all offered on the accelerated 8 week class. You could be done by April!
Best of luck
You might be able to get around the issue of having to take the prereq for nutrition. Sometimes it's as easy as getting the instructor to give you permission to take their class. I have a similar situation where I needed to take chemistry but needed to take math first. But since I have my bachelors in something else already and am just going back to do my prereqs before nursing school, I was able to send an email to the chemistry instructor, explaining why I was "qualified" to take the class despite me not technically meeting the prereq for that class (we had to complete math 098 within the last three years - I had taken statistics 10 years ago, but also took the compass test just last month, which placed me in the highest level of math, so I was able to explain that while I had "expired" math credits, I was still competent in math way beyond the minimum requirement).
You might be able to take a similar approach and explain that you already have a BS and ask for a permit/add code that you can bring to registration.
Thank you for your response! I'm still going to have to take biology no matter what because the school that I am attending requires it in order to be accepted into their nursing program. I may be able to get around it by taking micro and nutrition together at another community college this summer, and then take biology in the fall. Do you think that it would be too challenging to take general biology, microbiology, and nutrition during at the same time this summer? That way I would be done. Just don't want to overwhelm myself. I also work a full time job.

I would suggest taking your BIO class now in preparation for the summer classes. Do you know which BIO you need...is it a 100 or 200 level class? If work is an issue (for attending class) then take it online. There are many Community Colleges that offer online classes. I know the community college I took my online classes with has students from all over the country. Speak with an advisor about which classes transfer (they often have different coding names) to be sure you take the right one for the school you hope to attend. Or, of course, the community college in your area may offer the online class too??
I do know that the college I went to starts classes pretty much every week, so there is no waiting around - you enroll and get going. Although of course you'd be paying out of state tuition if the college is outside of FL. Anyway - that way your class would be completed before the summer, in time for you to enroll in the other two classes that you need.
